Chapter 22

Chapter 022 — Haagenti (7)

Enoch recoiled in horror as an enormous amount of demonic energy began forming in Haagenti’s chest.

“Kyaak! He’s shaving away his own soul!”

Demons already could not use their full power in the human world.

An incomplete Descent placed even harsher restrictions on them.

So Haagenti made a choice.

“If this is enough to tear you insects apart….”

He would squeeze demonic energy out of his own soul as collateral.

That would make up for the power he lacked.

Of course, it would also heavily damage his true body in Hell, forcing him to disappear for quite some time afterward.

But—

“I DON’T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THAT!!”

Haagenti ripped his hand out of his chest.

Demonic energy scattered from his body and spread in every direction.

It was an even greater wave of demonic power than when he had first descended.

RUMBLEEEEEEEE!

A violent current began flowing through the entire monastery, including the ruins.

Every object touched by the current randomly changed shape, returned to normal, then changed again.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

This time, Haagenti did not even snap his fingers.

Countless giant hands—the same kind that had once slammed down on Mikael—rose from the ground.

And that was not all.

Crack. Crack.

Haagenti’s charred skin turned into fur.

Then into thick hide.

Then scales covered it.

His form changed endlessly, almost as if the entire evolution of living creatures had been compressed into a single body.

“GET OUT OF MY WAY!!”

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The giant hands repeatedly smashed down on the two Divine Beasts.

CRACK!

Haagenti’s transforming arm suddenly thickened until it resembled an elephant’s leg.

He drove his fingers into the ground and scooped out an enormous chunk of rock as though gouging out an eye.

Whoooosh!

BOOOOOOM!

The giant hands kept pounding down.

And Haagenti hurled boulders on top of them.

The entire area where the Divine Beasts had been standing was pulverized into dust, creating a massive cloud.

When the barrage finally stopped—

“Haa… haa….”

Haagenti panted heavily as power leaked continuously from his body.

He raised his head.

But once the dust cleared—

A barrier of white flame stood before him.

“Mikael….”

Haagenti narrowed his eyes.

“Your power has returned.”

He became wary of the aura he could feel.

But Mikael barely paid attention to him.

“…Noah. Enoch.”

Whooom!

Mikael swept his arm.

The cloud of dust scattered.

The two Divine Beasts lay on the ground.

The light around their bodies had disappeared.

The aura that had been connected to Mikael was gone as well.

They had accomplished what they wanted.

“Nyaa… M-Mikael… g-good to see you.”

“Whine… It’s been a long time.”

Seeing Mikael’s expression darken, the two Divine Beasts greeted him awkwardly.

“Long time, my ass.”

Clench.

Mikael tightly clenched his fist.

He understood what Noah and Enoch had done.

They had thrown away their lives for him.

He had entered the monastery to save them.

If they sacrificed themselves to save him instead, then the entire point had been reversed.

“Why the hell did you do something like this?”

“Hehe… nyaa… Don’t be so angry.”

Enoch tried to lighten the mood, lazily showing the kind of affection only a cat could.

Noah snorted and spoke as though it was nothing.

“Hmph. We would’ve died without you anyway. It’s better if we can at least help you like this. Woof!”

Just then—

Rustle.

Small hands created from the ground by Haagenti’s transformation ability began crawling toward them like snakes.

He had been waiting for an opening while Mikael reunited with the Divine Beasts.

But—

CRACK!

This Mikael was on an entirely different level from the one Haagenti had been fighting before.

Aura wrapped around Mikael’s arm.

With a single swing, he shattered every hand.

Then he raised his arm and stared at Haagenti.

“You fucking idiot. Can’t you read the room?”

“Stay the hell over there.”

“Libertas.”

White Flame gathered into Mikael’s palm.

It was on a completely different scale from every flame he had used until now.

The moment he finished the incantation, the flames spread freely in every direction.

…Seventy percent? No. Around sixty?

This was not merely a case of receiving some extra aura.

Compared to his prime, Mikael could now use roughly sixty to seventy percent of his former strength.

And right now, that meant only one thing.

Mikael grinned.

“You’re fucked, Haagenti.”

The scattered flames wandered through the air for a moment.

Then they all rushed toward Haagenti at once.

Babababababang!

Realizing that simple body transformation would not be enough to stop them, Haagenti stomped his foot.

RUMBLEEEE!

The earth rose in the shape of a dome around him.

It looked as though it would protect Haagenti.

But—

Fwoooosh—

Drip.

Drip.

“U-Ugh… AAAAAAAAAAGH!”

The rushing White Flames burned through the stone dome from every direction.

Molten rock rained down together with the flames, pouring over Haagenti.

This firepower was on a completely different level from before, when Mikael could not even melt stone walls.

The White Flame, almost like the flames of Hell itself, dragged Haagenti back into memories of the past.

Memories of being utterly powerless before Mikael.

“DO YOU THINK I’LL BE TRAMPLED LIKE I WAS BACK THEN?!”

Haagenti refused to simply stand there and take it like when his temple had been destroyed.

His entire body twisted hideously.

He tried to thrust his hand into his chest again.

But—

“Do I still look like an idiot to you?”

Mikael had already closed the distance.

“You’re trying the same shit twice.”

Aura formed into the shape of a sword in Mikael’s right hand.

He swung it at Haagenti.

CRUNCH!

SHAAAK!

Haagenti hurriedly transformed his arm and covered it with a turtle-like shell.

But—

“You know this already.”

Mikael smiled.

“A sword was always my main weapon.”

His blade sliced smoothly through Haagenti’s arm as if cutting tofu.

SPURT!

Blood sprayed like a fountain.

Before the severed arm could even hit the ground—

Mikael’s kick smashed upward into Haagenti’s jaw.

“Kuh!”

Haagenti fell to one knee.

Mikael looked down at him.

Then he felt his aura beginning to shake.

I’m burning through it faster than I expected.

Do I have less than five minutes left?

He had to finish this within that time.

Mikael adjusted his grip on the sword and raised it, preparing to split Haagenti in two.

But—

“IMPOSSIBLE!”

Haagenti screamed.

“THERE’S NO WAY MY GRAND PLAN WILL COLLAPSE BECAUSE OF SOMEONE LIKE YOU!!”

FWOOSH!

Haagenti raised his head.

Tears were running down his face.

This time, his demonic energy began increasing without any warning at all.

“Crazy bastard.”

Mikael frowned.

“You really don’t care what happens afterward, do you?”

Power obtained suddenly always demanded a price.

Mikael had no idea how Haagenti planned to deal with the consequences.

But it was obvious he had staked everything on this.

If he’s pulling out that much demonic energy, even returning to Hell is going to screw him over.

The amount he had forced out earlier would already require a long period of recovery.

At this rate, Haagenti could even become prey for other Great Demons.

Mikael urgently swung his sword.

But—

“I’LL MAKE YOU KNEEL BEFORE ME AGAIN!”

Still unable to abandon his arrogance, Haagenti roared.

His body began merging with the ruins.

Like sinking into a swamp, Haagenti was pulled into the ground.

Mikael’s sword sliced through empty air.

RUMBLEEEEE.

Haagenti’s body disappeared completely.

Then the entire ruins began shaking and changing.

All kinds of weapons emerged.

Bladed weapons meant for close combat.

Firearms that fired automatically.

Mikael quickly moved to protect Noah and Enoch and swung his sword.

Whoosh!

CRACK!

He destroyed every weapon as soon as it appeared.

But it was not over.

“KUWAAAAAA!”

This time, instead of only a giant hand—

An entire giant made of stone rose from the ground.

Where its lower body should have been, there were no legs.

Instead, a mound of earth constantly shed fragments of stone.

The giant slid across the ground toward Mikael.

Then it slammed down its fist.

BOOOOM!

Mikael jumped straight up.

He landed on top of the fist as it struck the ground.

Then he coated his sword in White Flame.

“Ignículus.”

Mikael swung.

A crescent-shaped blade of White Flame shot from the sword.

It split the giant cleanly in half.

THOOOM!

The severed upper body crashed to the ground.

But the moment it touched the ruins—

It sank into them.

Then rose again from the cut surface.

“This is getting annoying.”

With the little time he had left, a battle of attrition was the worst possible option.

He needed to finish this quickly.

But now that Haagenti had merged with the ruins, Mikael had no direct way to attack him.

No—

There was one.

If I blow apart the whole area with Harmonia….

With the amount of firepower Mikael currently had, Harmonia could easily reduce the entire ruins to dust.

The problem was—

He could not guarantee everyone else’s safety.

While Mikael hesitated—

Step.

“Woof! Mikael, leave this to us!”

The two Divine Beasts, who should not have had enough strength left to move, began glowing again.

They charged into the ruins.

Mikael could not bring himself to stop them.

Behind Noah and Enoch’s bright expressions, he could feel their resolve.

“Fucking idiots.”

Mikael clicked his tongue.

“You never listened to a damn thing I said back then either.”

While Mikael attacked the giant to draw its attention—

The two Divine Beasts slipped past it and reached a specific location.

Once they arrived—

Their bodies shone more brightly than ever before.

Like the last burst of flame before death.

“Kyaak! Come out, Haagenti!”

“Grrrr! Go back to Hell quietly!”

The light spreading in every direction soon gathered in the air.

It took the shape of a gigantic hand.

The hand of light reached down toward the earth.

“KUOOOOOO!”

The giant fighting Mikael stretched out both of its hands and grabbed the glowing hand.

The two forces struggled against each other.

The light began to fade.

But—

“Not happening.”

A crescent of White Flame flew through the air.

It sliced off both of the giant’s arms.

With all resistance gone—

The hand of light plunged straight into the earth.

Purple mist violently erupted from underground, as though something beneath the ground was desperately resisting.

But that only lasted for a moment.

CRUNCH!

Something was ripped out.

Haagenti burst from the ground, trapped inside the glowing hand.

“Kugh… You filthy beasts!!”

Every time purple mist poured from Haagenti’s body, the hand of light rapidly grew fainter.

“Grrrr! Now, Mikael!”

At Noah’s signal—

Mikael gripped his aura sword in both hands.

Then he kicked off the ground.

Tap!

In an instant, he reached Haagenti.

White Flame once again flowed along the sword hanging at his side.

Mikael exhaled.

“Haa… Let’s not see each other again during this Omen.”

Haagenti stared at him in silence.

As if resigned to his fate, he moved his lips.

He seemed to be trying to leave Mikael some kind of final Words of Power.

But there was no one here willing to politely listen.

SLASH!

The sword wrapped in White Flame cut diagonally through Haagenti’s body.

His body collapsed like a puppet whose strings had been cut.

“Did he escape?”

The cut had felt too light.

Most likely, Haagenti had abandoned Taedeung’s body and returned to Hell.

Crack. Craaaack.

The corpse Haagenti had left behind rapidly shriveled into something resembling a mummy.

It was not purification.

It was simply the end of a vessel that had contained far more power than it was capable of holding.

Having finally exhausted all their remaining strength—

Noah and Enoch lost their glow.

They collapsed.

“You did well.”

Mikael approached them.

He laid both Divine Beasts across his lap and gently stroked them.

“Purr… It’s been a long time since I felt Mikael’s hand.”

“…Woof.”

Each time Mikael stroked her, Enoch enjoyed the touch like a proper cat.

Noah, meanwhile, looked far more relaxed than his usual calm and dignified self.

After a while, Enoch asked naturally—

“Mikael… did you find Lady Helena? Nyaa?”

Mikael looked at her.

Since Mikael had always searched for Helena first, Enoch had assumed he had done the same this time.

But—

“Huh?”

Mikael blinked.

“You two didn’t come to Korea because you were looking for Lady Helena?”

In fact, Mikael had been hoping to use Noah and Enoch’s help to find Helena.

“Purrr… I thought so.”

As though she had already expected that answer, Enoch rubbed her face against Mikael’s pants.

Then she quietly spoke.

“In this fate…”

Her tone became serious.

“You are the only hope we have. Nyaa.”

Mikael stopped petting her.

He listened carefully.

Noah, who had relaxed earlier, also returned to his usual calm demeanor.

“Hmph. There is a group following the Omen.”

Noah spoke.

“We tried to stop them, but we weren’t strong enough. Woof.”

Enoch continued.

“The only thing we could do… was search for you, Mikael. Nyaa.”

Mikael had assumed the two Divine Beasts had come to Korea in search of Helena.

But the truth was the opposite.

They had come searching for Mikael.

Then—

Light began shining from both of their bodies.

It was different from the light they had emitted while fighting Haagenti.

This light was pale.

And somehow bitter.

“It’s time… nyaa.”

Mikael quietly looked at them.

“You’re leaving?”

The consequence of using their lifespan as collateral had finally caught up with them.

Noah exhaled softly.

“Hmph. New souls will take our place.”

“Please take good care of them. Woof.”

Just as Noah said—

New Divine Beasts would be born.

Mikael gently nodded.

“You don’t need to worry about that.”

Still—

Watching companions he had known for so long disappear hurt more than he wanted to admit.

Their light began scattering.

A single tear rolled down Mikael’s cheek.

The two Divine Beasts placed their front paws on Mikael’s hands.

None of the three spoke.

They simply accepted the approaching farewell in silence.

At last, Mikael spoke.

“…Noah. Enoch.”

His voice was low.

“You really did well.”

“When you get there… live your own lives.”

He wanted them to live freely.

No longer bound by the name of Divine Beast.

No longer bound by the Omen.

Soon, all of the light scattered completely.

And where Noah and Enoch had been—

A newborn kitten and puppy remained.

“Nyaa.”

“Woof!”

The birth of new Divine Beasts.

Mikael gently gathered the tiny creatures into his arms.

Then he sat down where he was.

Whoooosh.

A single gust of wind brushed past him.

For some reason—

The wind felt especially cold today.

“Haaaaam.”

Now that the tension had disappeared, exhaustion suddenly crashed over him.

There was still plenty left to do.

He had to deal with the remaining enemies.

He had to find Sia.

And Valefor.

Even so—

Mikael accepted the sleepiness washing over him.

It almost felt as though something was intentionally pulling him into sleep, just like what had happened at Lourdes.

But surely—

He was not going to get sealed again.

“They’ll figure it out somehow….”

Mikael yawned.

“I’m just going to sleep.”

In the middle of the now-empty monastery that had lost its god—

Mikael gently set down the newborn Divine Beasts.

Then he closed his eyes and went to sleep.
