Chapter 2

  • “Kyaaaa! Seungmin!”

Flash!

Daeho and Seungmin’s father both flinched.

It was only for an instant.

Reflexively, Daeho spun around and sprinted toward the restroom.

Bang!

“Seungmin’s mom! Stay right there! Don’t move!”

At the same time, Seungmin’s father moved in the opposite direction.

“Here! Steward! Steward!”

The sudden commotion woke people, who began looking around in confusion.

“What’s happening all of a sudden?”
 “What’s with that scream?”
 “Who’s Seungmin?”

Everyone was bewildered, trying to understand the situation.

Meanwhile, Daeho had already reached the restroom.

Tap!

“Seungmin!”

He immediately looked for the boy.

Seungmin was limp in his mother’s arms.

“Gurgle… gurgle…”

His eyes were rolled back, and foam kept coming from his mouth.

Seungmin’s mother didn’t know what to do and wailed.

“Seungmin! Someone help! My child, my child!”

“Ma’am, please stay calm. I’m a doctor.”

“Wh-what? Doctor? Our Seungmin… he’s… please save him!”

“I need to examine Seungmin first. Give him to me.”

Snap!

Ignoring protests, Daeho took Seungmin from his mother’s arms.

There was no time to negotiate.

He laid Seungmin down in the open space near the emergency exit.

“Seungmin, it’s hyung. Can you hear me?”

Tap, tap.

Daeho checked Seungmin’s consciousness by tapping his cheeks.

Nearby passengers’ eyes widened as they hurriedly stepped back from their seats.

“What’s happening?!”
 “Step back! The child’s sick!”
“Move! Don’t get in the way!”

Click!

Every adult instantly gave space.

They didn’t know this child, yet they moved willingly.

Daeho didn’t have a moment to thank them.

Seungmin’s condition worsened.

  • Gurgle… gurgle…

Snap, snap.

Daeho loosened the boy’s clothes to help him breathe.

“Breathe, Seungmin. Breathe!”

He shouted to emphasize it.

He reached out instinctively. But there was nothing to grab.

They were on a plane.

The medical tools he always carried weren’t around.

‘Damn, my pouch…’

He had specially requested a medical kit to be brought onboard, stored in the overhead compartment.

He remembered it but didn’t have time to get it.

Seungmin’s condition was deteriorating rapidly.

Then his breathing changed again.

“Hiss… gag… ugh.”

Irregular, restricted breathing.

The boy had become a critical emergency.

The flight attendants arrived, startled by the sudden emergency.

“What should we do?”
 “So…?”

They had safety training, but this was different.

Daeho called out urgently,

“Please help here!”

“What should we do?”

“Get the emergency kit and loosen his clothes! Quickly!”

His voice was strong but calm despite the crisis.

The attendants paused, then cautiously asked,

“Are you a doctor?”

“Yeah, he’s a doctor!”

Pat, pat!

Seungmin’s father rushed through the crowd, followed by more attendants.

“That’s Dr. Johns Hopkins!”

“Yes!”

Relief spread across their faces.

Johns Hopkins—the world’s top hospital, renowned globally.

It was lucky that a plane from Washington had a doctor onboard.

The flight attendants quickly regained composure.

“Get the emergency kit, fast!”
 “Notify the captain!”
 “I’ll help with his pants!”

Rustle.

The attendants moved quickly. Daeho used their efforts efficiently.

“Loosen his pants!”
 “Doing it!”
“Someone get water! Any water to rinse his mouth!”
 “I’ll do it!”

Snap!

The attendant ran to the galley and returned with a bottle of water.

“Here’s water!”

“Pour slowly to rinse! Carefully!”
 “O-okay…”

Drip, drip.

The water went into Seungmin’s mouth. Daeho watched carefully, timing each move.

“Spit it out first, then again!”
 “Pour more!”

They cleared his mouth to secure his breathing first.

At that moment, another attendant arrived with the emergency kit, accompanied by a middle-aged man in his fifties with a large nose.

“Emergency patient!”
 “Are you a doctor?”
 “Yes. How can I help?”

No time for introductions.

Daeho spoke quickly but calmly,

“Doctor, check his vitals!”

“Understood. But he’s American?”

“Nationality doesn’t matter in an emergency.”

“Agreed. Let’s check vitals.”

Click, click.

The middle-aged doctor opened the kit—stethoscope, blood pressure monitor, and basic tools.

He quickly and accurately checked Seungmin’s vitals.

Daeho glanced at him and thought,

‘He’s an internal medicine doctor.’

Judging from his hands, Daeho inferred his specialty.

Daeho’s own hands had faint traces of surgical work.

Internal medicine would be helpful here.

Daeho examined Seungmin with the stethoscope.

Swish, swish.

The sounds of the heart, blood flow, and lungs amplified with each movement.

So many sounds in the body, like an orchestra.

Daeho had to pick out the problem sounds.

“No, no… this one!”

His eyes flashed.

The problem was the heart.

  • Click, tick, thump-thump-thump.

The rhythm was completely off.

‘Just as I thought… hypotensive shock.’

The middle-aged doctor checked the vitals and gasped.

“His blood pressure is too low! Pulse fast, breathing slow… it’s hypotensive shock!”

“Tch!”

“Did you expect this?”

He asked quickly. Daeho rattled off the history like rap.

“Patient about 4 years old. Frequent vomiting since flight began, pale, difficulty breathing, mild fever. Abnormal.”

“Classic hypotensive shock symptoms.”

“First, we raise blood pressure with a hypertensor…”

While Daeho briefed the treatment, Seungmin’s body jolted violently.

Thump, thump.

Daeho narrowed his eyes.

“Damn. Shock reaction! Hold him down, help me!”

Thud!

He pressed down on Seungmin. The attendants helped quickly.

Tap, tap!

“Like this.”
 “We’ve got him!”

Seungmin’s body was immobilized instantly.

His parents’ hearts nearly broke.

His mother twisted desperately, trying to reach him.

“Seungmin!”
 “No, honey!”

Snap!

Seungmin’s father held his wife tightly.

“Don’t interfere! Not now!”

“Seungmin… honey!”

“Everyone is helping. Everyone is trying for our son.”

The father sweat, trying to calm his wife, though his own heart raced.

He bit his lips so hard he drew blood but didn’t even notice the metallic taste.

‘Seungmin… please be okay!’

He prayed silently as Daeho and the middle-aged doctor worked.

Meanwhile, Daeho shouted to the middle-aged doctor,

“Doctor! Recheck vitals!”

“Doing it… oh no, what is this!”

The doctor saw the readings and froze.

Daeho couldn’t see the monitor but didn’t panic.

Tap, tap!

He checked the heart again with the stethoscope.

The erratic heartbeat grew louder.

  • Thump-thump-thump!

Daeho’s eyes hardened.

“Damn… V-FIB! Ventricular fibrillation!”

“Ventricular fibrillation? Why now?”

“Start CPR immediately!”

Press, press.

Daeho began chest compressions. The middle-aged doctor’s eyes widened.

The patient’s state was worse than expected, and panic threatened.

“What… suddenly?”
 “Stay calm!”
 “Okay! AED and EMK, now!”

The middle-aged doctor shouted urgently.
