Chapter 6

Daeho didn’t ignore that desperate plea.

Swish.

He leaned close to Seungmin’s ear and called softly,

“Seungmin… Hunga. Hunga.”

“Shhh… Hunga… candy…”

Seungmin’s slurred voice came out faintly.

Though the words were unclear, Daeho understood perfectly.

At that moment, he waved his hand in the air.

Rustle.

Like magic, a lollipop appeared again and Daeho placed it in Seungmin’s hand.

“Here, candy.”

“Fuuu… shhh…”

Seungmin felt the lollipop and gently curled his tiny fingers around it.

He held it tightly, determined not to let go.

‘Good job, kid.’

Daeho gave a bright, refreshing smile.

Seeing him like that, all the irritation he had felt melted away as if it had never existed.

“What are you doing? You should take Seungmin quickly.”

“Doctor… I’m sorry.”

“No need for that. Seungmin comes first.”

“Th-thank you. Everyone, let’s move.”

Rumble.

Under Kim Hyunseok’s lead, everyone set off again.

After they all left… only Park Yuseon remained.

“Doctor…”

“This isn’t the time. Please, go quickly.”

“Th… thank you.”

She bowed deeply, showing the crown of her head.

Then hurried after Seungmin.

Alone, Daeho smiled faintly.

Even just giving Seungmin the lollipop again brought him joy.

This pure happiness.

He felt lucky to experience it the moment he stepped on Korean soil.

This was why he became a doctor.

A heart filled with pride and satisfaction was enough.

A little later.

Daeho and the middle-aged doctor exited through the airline staff entrance.

Daeho’s face was full of a smile.

“Ha ha! One-year seat upgrade service… that’s quite a perk.”

“Hehe, thanks to you, I got a nice benefit too.”

The doctor spoke with a satisfied look.

The stress of the emergency had made his prominent nose even more noticeable.

Daeho paused and spoke to him.

“Sir, I didn’t even get to introduce myself properly. I’m Richard Choi.”

“No time to exchange names in such a situation. I’m Jo Hancheol.”

Firm handshake.

The two men briefly felt awkward.

“It feels strange to only now know your name after hours together.”

“Yes, and I heard you’re from Johns Hopkins?”

“That’s right.”

“Here’s my card. Maybe we’ll meet again, and if so, I hope to share a drink.”

Swish.

Jo Hancheol handed his business card with a smile.

Daeho accepted it quickly and said lightly,

“Sure, a drinking buddy would be nice.”

“Where are you headed? I can take you if the direction’s the same.”

“No, someone’s here to pick me up.”

“Of course. Then I’ll excuse myself.”

Jo Hancheol turned and walked away cleanly.

Daeho watched him and smiled gently.

“Cool and neat. That’s my style.”

He murmured and put the card in his pocket, thinking he might meet him again someday.

As he approached the immigration hall, his expression fell.

“What? They’re not out?”

Inside a taxi heading to Seoul.

Vroom.

Daeho sat in the back seat, observing the passing scenery.

His expression remained indifferent.

His phone displayed an email he remembered vividly:

  • Mom wanted to see Daeho before leaving but had to rush to Dad. Not sure when I’ll be in Korea, but take care until then. Love you, son.

Daeho flipped the phone and rolled down the window.

Whoooosh!

The wind blew his hair around.

He took in the sight of Incheon Airport one last time.

“One year isn’t that long.”

Meanwhile, at a general hospital emergency room in Incheon.

The ER chief unusually examined the patient who had just been transported—Seungmin.

Seungmin’s brows twitched on the bed.

“Hmm… mmhmm…”

He was waking up.

Kim Hyunseok and Park Yuseon rushed over.

“Seungmin, it’s Dad!”
 “Seungmin, do you recognize Mom?”

The ER chief gently pushed them back.

“Director, please wait a moment.”
 “Thank you.”

The chief carefully observed Seungmin as he woke up.

Soon, Seungmin fully opened his eyes.

His hands still tightly held the lollipop.

“Hunga… candy…”

Park Yuseon hugged him immediately, tears streaming.

“Ah… Seungmin… sob, sob.”

“Mom, Hunga?”
“Do you remember the candy your brother gave you?”
 “Yes… candy Hunga. Not lost.”

Shaking his head, Seungmin held the lollipop tightly again.

It was damp from being held so long, yet he never let go.

At the same time, Kim Hyunseok spoke with the ER chief.

“Chief, how is he?”

“Director, it’s the first time since the Blue House event I’ve seen you.”

“Time flew. But is Seungmin okay?”

The ER chief frowned, then asked,

“A young doctor performed emergency treatment on Seungmin on a plane?”

“Yes… but is there a problem?”

“This is insane.”

The chief clicked his tongue.

“Why?” asked a confused Kim Hyunseok.

“Completely insane. Honestly, the success rate for such surgery is below ten percent.”

Kim Hyunseok’s eyes widened.

“Below ten percent?”

“That doctor is either crazy or incredible. Most doctors would avoid this. They couldn’t do it.”

‘He’s young though.’

“Regardless, it was perfect.”

The chief’s words made Kim Hyunseok’s eyes flicker.

“Perfect?”

“Yes. Performing emergency treatment in an unprepared airplane is extraordinary.”

“I’d like more details.”

The chief quickly added,

“…there’s no further action needed. Just keep disinfecting until it heals.”

“Really?”

“Looks like Seungmin saved the country in his past life. That’s all.”

The chief finished and left quietly.

Kim Hyunseok looked at the staff nearby.

“This wasn’t how we were supposed to let it go.”

“Director?”

“Johns Hopkins… Richard Choi. Find him in Korea immediately.”

“Yes, sir.”

The staff nodded resolutely.

Kim Hyunseok finally felt slightly relieved, looking at Seungmin.

‘Richard Choi… Richard Choi…’

He repeated the name in his mind, unwilling to forget.

Chunghyo University Hospital.

One of Korea’s top five general hospitals.

In the vice-director’s office, a large nameplate sat on the desk:

  • Vice Director Han Seunghoon

A middle-aged man sat on the couch, his thick eyebrows partially gray, showing years of experience.

He handed Daeho an employee card with a satisfied smile.

“Now, you’re part of the family.”

The card read:

  • Emergency Medicine Resident, 4th Year

  • Richard Choi

The name was different, yet Daeho accepted it without hesitation.

“Please take care of me for the next year.”

“Richard, no need to be so formal.”

“The contract is for one year, as I understand it.”

Daeho clarified the period.

Vice Director Han quickly changed the subject.

“Don’t be so strict. Experience builds trust, and perspectives change over time.”

“Understood. I’ll take that as a warning not to rush judgment.”

“That’s right. Let’s do well together. Haha!”

Vice Director Han pounded the armrest laughing heartily.

Daeho smiled lightly, matching the mood, and tried to prepare to leave.

“Then I’ll…”

But Han Seunghoon wasn’t ready to end the meeting.

He suddenly brought up a new topic.

“You seem familiar. Have we met before?”

“Last year at Johns Hopkins.”

“Before that?”

“Not that I recall.”

Daeho answered calmly.

Han Seunghoon frowned.

“Still, you seem familiar. Strange.”

“You may have noticed me as the only Asian in the surgery team meeting.”

“Ah, yes. Impressive. You led the ‘T-type Batista’ as a 3rd-year resident. Amazing.”

Han Seunghoon admired openly.

Daeho replied formally,

“Many surgeons perform it, and the success rate is already high.”

“That’s for experienced specialists. I researched it then.”

Daeho looked puzzled.

“Excuse me, what do you mean?”

“You were called the reincarnation of Dr. Caprini at Johns Hopkins… a promising talent, yet kept quiet.”

Daeho’s face flushed, waving his hands.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“Hehe. I have high expectations. Train hard and spread your wings. But Korea already has many top surgeons.”

Han Seunghoon showed a photo on his phone.

A quiet rural clinic, with young Han Seunghoon and another person.

Daeho’s eyes flickered slightly as he recognized him.

“This… person is?”

“Some call him the ‘Patient Fool’ or ‘Hero of Ijambak.’”

“……”

“I call him ‘Dr. Choi Taesoo.’”

Pride filled Han Seunghoon’s voice.
