Chapter 8

Soon, Daeho stepped into the first zone of the emergency room.

There was a single area with curtains drawn all around.

Rustle.

“Please take care of this!”

The curtains quickly opened, revealing the paramedics coming out.

There.

Daeho moved toward them.

He greeted the passing paramedics politely and briefly.

“Thank you for your hard work.”

“Doctor? Oh, thank you.”

In that instant, they felt a subtle, unspoken connection as they passed each other.

Daeho reached the curtain.

Inside, the patient’s screams echoed.

-Aaaah! Ughh!

Followed by Kang Jinsu’s urgent voice.

“Doctor, the internal bleeding is severe.”

“……”

“The patella is barely palpable, and the pain level is extremely high!”

“What are you doing? Check the lab schedule immediately!”

Park Youngjun’s order rang sharply.

Kang Jinsu’s flustered reply came next.

“It’ll take an hour for the lab.”

“Then call orthopedics!”

“But the patient is in extreme pain.”

“That’s why we gave morphine. Watch and then transfer to orthopedics. Understood?”

Park Youngjun’s tone was harsh and impatient.

But.

Daeho was watching through the curtain.

“……”

His gaze was fixed on the emergency patient.

The patient’s face was twisted in pain, moaning uncontrollably.

-Aaaah!

Daeho wasn’t just observing.

The patient’s leg was swollen, almost ready to burst the pants.

Daeho’s eyes glowed sharply as he studied the injured limb.

Beep!

  • Fracture of femur

  • Femoral artery rupture

  • Fracture of fibula

  • Nerve damage

  • Muscle rupture

All these injuries formed a clear picture in his mind.

And the conclusion was immediate.

‘Emergency level 3. Urgent.’

In short, this was a critically injured patient.

Emergency treatment had to begin immediately.

At that moment, Park Youngjun barked at Kang Jinsu.

“What are you doing? Call orthopedics and transfer quickly!”

“But the leg is broken and swollen…”

“That’s why I said transfer quickly. Holding him won’t help!”

Park Youngjun glared, intimidating Kang Jinsu.

Kang Jinsu pleaded urgently.

“Doctor, even if we call now, I don’t know when they’ll arrive!”

“That’s orthopedics’ problem. I’ve given the order.”

Whoosh!

Park Youngjun turned away coldly.

That’s when Daeho raised his eyebrows.

Grrr.

He pulled the curtain open roughly.

Rustle!

He wanted to shout, but he held back once.

“Does a doctor turn away with an emergency patient right in front?”

“What… who are you!”

“Aren’t you going to treat him? Time is critical.”

“How dare you.”

Park Youngjun shouted, but Daeho didn’t blink.

“Answer me. Will you do it or just watch?”

“Hey, you…”

Park Youngjun’s lips trembled.

Whoosh.

Daeho didn’t wait. He shoved Park Youngjun aside.

Park staggered.

“Argh!”

Daeho ignored him and addressed Kang Jinsu.

“Dr. Kang, what are you doing? Just standing there?”

“Uh…”

Kang Jinsu hesitated. The patient’s screams continued.

-Aaaah! Ughh!

The patient gripped his shirt tightly, enduring the pain.

Daeho asked Nurse Nasanju to prepare immediately.

“Get bupivacaine and the emergency surgery kit ready.”

“But, still…”

“Right now!”

Ping!

Daeho’s fierce voice and intense gaze made her flinch.

The presence of Daeho felt like a mountain, overwhelming.

‘Whoa!’

Startled, Nasanju ran to the nurse station, not fully realizing why she was moving so fast.

At that moment, Park Youngjun sprang up.

His face was full of anger and disbelief.

“This brat pushed me? Who does he think he is?”

Daeho’s eyes flashed.

“If you’re not confident, step aside.”

“What? Who do you think you are?”

“Then, you do it!”

Grrr!

Daeho’s glare forced him to choose.

Meanwhile, the patient’s moans continued.

-Aaaah! Ughh!

The pants were swollen almost to bursting.

Any doctor would know. Anyone could see.

Inside the pants was a ticking time bomb.

Touch it?

It would explode.

And blood would flood everywhere.

Park Youngjun’s eyes widened.

“U-uh…”

He couldn’t make a decision, voice lost.

He gripped his briefcase tightly.

Daeho snapped coldly.

“If you’re not going to treat him, step aside.”

“Ugh!”

“Hurry!”

Daeho’s voice thundered, forcing Park Youngjun to step back.

“Y-you… dare to…”

Still clinging to his pride.

Daeho’s voice cut cold.

“No time!”

“Ahh!”

Clack!

Park Youngjun ran out of the ER in frustration.

Kang Jinsu, witnessing this, gaped.

“Uh… uh… what do we do?”

Even an intern could tell this was serious.

But Daeho ignored everything.

He grabbed a curved Mezenbaum scissors from the prepared medical cart.

His movements were surprisingly gentle.

He spoke calmly to the patient, who was still in pain.

“Sir, I know it’s uncomfortable. We’ll fix this first.”

Ssssh.

Daeho carefully cut the patient’s pants. The swollen flesh bulged dangerously.

But the patient’s moans eased slightly.

“Ah… thank… you…”

Daeho explained gently.

“Releasing the blood trapped in your pants eased the pain temporarily.”

Kang Jinsu finally understood and shouted,

“Dr. Richard, what are you doing?”

“Dr. Kang, assist me.”

“It’s not that… right now…”

“Then step aside if you can’t help.”

“What you’re doing, senior…”

“Right now? What else is there besides the patient?”

Daeho’s voice was serious and commanding.

Kang Jinsu looked at the patient, eyes wide, and nodded.

“Do whatever you tell me.”

“Exactly. That’s the attitude a doctor must have in front of an emergency patient.”

Daeho winked briefly in satisfaction.

Then, he calmed again and spoke to the patient.

“You have a fracture of the femur…”

He asked Kang Jinsu to interpret.

“It’s a thigh bone fracture.”

“Okay. And the femoral artery?”

“It’s the main artery in the thigh.”

Daeho snapped his fingers.

“Great. Excellent interpreter.”

Kang Jinsu awkwardly acknowledged the praise.

Daeho’s attention returned fully to the patient.

“Your femoral artery is torn, and there’s more…”

“Doctor… will I survive?”

The patient asked during a momentary pause in pain.

Daeho looked at him calmly.

“Even with a crushed leg, fatalities are extremely rare.”

“No, I want… to keep living on both legs. I must!”

“Any particular reason?”

“I’m a martial arts instructor. And I have two children…”

“I see.”

Daeho nodded.

As the head of a family, he must walk on both legs.

The patient’s desperate eyes asked again.

“I know it’s serious. Will I be able to walk?”

“Yes.”

Daeho’s calm answer surprised the patient.

“Really? I… really can walk again?”

The patient’s eyes were filled with anxiety.

Pain surged again.

Daeho looked at the leg and asked seriously,

“Do you just want your leg attached?”

“What? Is it that bad? Will it be impossible to move?”

“No. You get to choose.”

Daeho suddenly put the decision to him.

The patient panicked.

“What… what choice? In this situation?”

“Whether to stay in the hospital or run out.”

The patient’s eyes widened.

Even Kang Jinsu was stunned.

“Dr. Richard… what are you saying…”

Daeho ignored their bewilderment and winked.

Hehe.

The calm smile gave no clear answer.

Yet the patient felt it.

‘Is he serious?’

Strangely, Daeho’s smile felt reassuring.
