Chapter 17

Chapter 17

The expedition members were so exhausted that even their vision had begun to blur.

But even for them, the sight before their eyes was far too shocking.

Everyone stared with their mouths hanging open, and some even trembled at the manifestation of one of the great ancient beings.

An apostle capable of controlling a manifestation of that size and power as though it were his own was by no means common.

And even more so when that apostle served a being that had protected humanity for hundreds of years.

Yohan was not the only apostle chosen by an Inner God.

The Great Old Ones were beings beyond human understanding.

No human could ever know the reason behind their actions, no matter what they chose to do.

Even taking that into account, however, Yohan's actions so far had been strange beyond belief.

There were times when Inner Gods clashed because of differences in their positions, but even then, they often stood together.

Yet an apostle of an Inner God was using an Inner God's power to try to liberate the four major factions.

How could that possibly make sense?

The expedition members, seeing Yohan use a manifestation for the first time, couldn't hide their shock at that fundamental question.

Of course, Yohan had never intended to answer them in the first place.

“S-Senior Yohan!”

After witnessing that tentacle attack earlier, there was no way they could approach him casually.

So Dexter and the others welcomed Yohan's arrival while keeping several meters of distance from him.

Yohan himself didn't even spare them a glance and continued straight ahead.

This time, he ran into Frank, who was farther away.

“...Weren't you already heading down? With your ability, you should've been able to go alone...”

“That was the plan. Until a moment ago.”

“......”

“Now you bastards will have to make a choice too. There won't be anywhere safe left in this place anymore.”

“A choice... Feels like there's only one path left anyway... Urgh!”

The tension suddenly left Frank's body, and his knees buckled.

His companions hurried over to support him.

Watching them hold one another up, Yohan snorted as though the sight was absurd.

Then, as Yohan walked forward with both arms extended, enemies began gathering around him once again.

The believers who had barely survived the judgment of the tentacles pointed their daggers toward him with dead eyes.

There was no longer any will left in them.

The goddess folded her arms and let out an amused chuckle.

[Hmm... They're all already under mind control? I thought that ability of yours was nothing special, Naberius.]

“It isn't.”

[Oh, really?]

“Even against those soulless fanatics, he can only control them by taking away their consciousness first... That's about the level we're dealing with.”

Yohan glanced at the countless trails of blood scattered across the ground and lightly smacked his lips.

Magic flowed out from beneath his feet and spread across the area like mist.

All the blood around them began moving toward Yohan.

“...Blood?”

Even the believers whose minds had been dominated by the demon stared in astonishment.

After gathering all the blood around him, Yohan skillfully changed its form with a movement of his hand.

From mist to liquid.

Then from liquid into long vines covered in countless thorns.

The dead blood soon scattered in every direction and began mercilessly piercing the vital points of the remaining believers.

“Aaaaargh!”

“Kugh!”

“K-Kegh...!”

They dropped dead one after another without even having the chance to properly question what had happened.

Yohan once again strode toward the center of the village.

Watching cries of life turn into death screams with satisfied eyes, the goddess wrapped herself around the back of Yohan's neck.

[When it comes to blood, you're probably even more of an expert than that ‘Ir-Tar,’ Blood Mage Yohan.]

“...Maybe. It doesn't really matter anymore.”

[I remember what you looked like six hundred years ago. You were cool then and you're cool now... but back then, you were much more dignified.]

“Was I...? I don't remember.”

[I'll tell you when it's just the two of us later. Hehehehe.]

“I refuse.”

Thanks to Yohan's overwhelming performance, the area near the village entrance had become relatively calm.

But the closer they came to the center, the worse the situation became.

A completely blackened lump of flesh rolled out from a building that had already burned down to ashes.

The bodies of those who had managed to escape outside before dying were comparatively less damaged.

Instead, every one of them wore horribly twisted expressions.

They were the faces of weak living creatures desperately struggling to survive when the calamity called death suddenly invaded their peaceful daily lives.

“......”

And now, Yohan had finally reached the entrance of the temple.

The stone pillars they had somehow built despite the harsh environment of the dungeon were quite impressive.

His gaze followed the pillars downward.

Then he suddenly noticed a familiar face.

When he focused his eyes, he saw Danforce Korsi near the entrance, gasping heavily for breath.

Yohan crossed the distance in an instant.

“Hah... Hah... Urgh!”

A dagger was buried deep in one side of Danforce's abdomen, blood pouring steadily from the wound.

Seeing Yohan arrive so late, Danforce raised his head with a bitter smile.

“You're late... Way too... late...”

“You did well surviving alone.”

Yohan quickly examined the gruesome scene around them.

He immediately understood what had happened here and how Danforce had managed to overcome it.

“Even after being ambushed, you still didn't lose against mere believers... Not bad.”

“Hah... Looks like... this is as far as I go, though...”

“We'll see.”

Aside from the severe wound in his side, blood covered many parts of Danforce's body.

So much blood had flowed beneath where he stood that a small pool had formed on the ground.

Unable to endure any longer, Danforce collapsed where he stood.

Yohan approached and extended a hand over his wound.

“What...?”

“This will hurt a little.”

With his other hand, Yohan lightly cut his own wrist.

Blood poured from the cut directly onto Danforce's wound.

Sssssss!

A horrible sound like burning flesh filled the air.

At the same time, the wound rapidly began to regenerate.

“Aaaaaaaaaaargh!”

“Blood itself is a mass of energy containing both mana and life force. If you know how to use it properly, you can heal most ordinary wounds.”

Watching Danforce writhe on the floor in agony brought a faint smile to Yohan's lips.

Unable to endure the continued extreme pain, Danforce eventually passed out.

Yohan clicked his tongue and resumed walking.

There was still one believer alive in the center of the staircase leading into the temple.

It was Erich, Danforce's former companion, who had been fighting him fiercely only moments earlier.

Breathing weakly and rapidly, he seemed to understand everything the moment he saw Yohan.

“So... you're the Mad Savior Yohan... the one Danforce was waiting for...”

Even through Erich's fading vision, Yohan's overwhelming amount of mana and oppressive presence couldn't be hidden.

“What a shame... If you'd joined the expedition a few years earlier... maybe I wouldn't have ended like this...”

“Nothing would've changed. Whether then or now, someone like you would've died quickly anyway.”

“Ha... Haha... I see...”

Those were Erich's final words.

His empty pupils and completely stopped breathing were proof that he had finally reached death.

“......”

Yohan continued walking.

The situation inside the temple was no different.

If the outside was filled with the bodies of residents, the inside was filled with the bodies of believers.

Their faces, just like Erich's, were swallowed by emptiness.

There was no longing for anything precious.

No desire to live.

Not even fear of death.

Yes.

This was how they ended.

These were the believers who had surrendered their souls after being deceived by sweet promises of temporary safety.

[Well, that's what choice and responsibility are all about.]

“After holding a blade to their throats and telling them, ‘Follow me or die.’”

[That's a pretty gentle threat for an Inner God. They could've just killed them and taken their souls afterward, but they were kind enough to give them a choice, weren't they?]

“It was kindness for the sake of power. There's no better material than faith when it comes to increasing divine power.”

[Aww, why are you so cynical today? No matter how many of those things die, it has nothing to do with you.]

“It doesn't.”

Yohan briefly turned his head backward and smirked.

“I just... found it amusing.”

[...Amusing?]

“The fact that without power, you can't even properly take responsibility.”

But that laugh wasn't directed at them.

It was directed at himself.

If only he hadn't possessed power...

Then perhaps he wouldn't have needed to bear the responsibility of saving the world.

Nor would he have needed to make the choice of forming a contract with her.

The last place Yohan reached was a massive altar beneath the temple.

The corpses of dozens of believers who had likely been praying there were scattered messily across the ground.

At the center stood a pitch-black demon statue, flashing with a crimson light as though celebrating the birth of a new apostle.

The hexagonal coffin shaped like an enormous carved image of Naberius was already empty.

“The time of the end draws near, human apostle.”

Anton Yates, who had been standing there alone and waiting for Yohan's arrival, spread his arms wide and shouted.

“A supreme being capable of erasing even death itself is coming to devour this land. Even the eternal gods will not escape this moment. Great beings will be swallowed by one even greater than themselves.”

Anton pointed arrogantly toward Yohan and smiled.

“I don't know whose apostle you are... but if you came for the remains, you're too late. I, Anton Yates, have replaced the previous apostle and inherited the authority of the Black Demon Naberius as his new apostle!”

Yohan's original plan of finding clues from the remains had completely fallen apart.

But that didn't mean he had gained nothing.

The arrogant attitude of the enemy before him.

The tragedy that had occurred throughout the village.

And the deaths of countless lives during the process.

Yohan instantly understood the clumsy little scheme Naberius had been attempting.

He stared at the new apostle pointing at him and spoke.

“You killed foolish creatures who never suspected a thing, then planned to devour the fear and shock created by their deaths to increase your influence.”

Well, it wasn't a terrible strategy.

After all, feeding on awe was also one of the specialties of the Great Old Ones.

“The problem is that the one attempting it was a demon god... and not just any demon god, but the utterly pathetic Naberius.”

“......”

At the blatant provocation, killing intent began pouring from Anton's entire body.

Yohan didn't care in the slightest.

He continued speaking.

“You killed more than several hundred civilians, yet the amount your influence increased is pitiful. This was probably meant to be your trump card, but with results like this, it's embarrassing. That leaves you with only one method. Do you know what it is?”

Yohan raised his right index finger.

His expression openly showed how pathetic he found the entire situation.

“Martyrs.”

“...You bastard.”

“Noble martyrs who sacrifice their lives for their great god. Nothing produces divine power more efficiently than faith. Isn't that right?”

“...If you already know all of that, then why did you come here? If you're an apostle too, you should understand. No matter what god you serve, in this place, you cannot defeat me.”

As if showing off his power, Anton Yates released sharp waves of mana in every direction.

Yohan silently watched him for a moment.

Then he shook his head.

“Wrong, Apostle of Naberius.”

“...What?”

“Even if you turned hundreds of thousands of believers into martyrs, there's no chance trash like you could kill me.”

A mist of blood created from the dead believers' blood had already begun circling around Yohan.

Yohan stared straight at Anton.

“I'll prove it to you right now.”
