Chapter 29

Chapter 29

BOOM!

BOOOOM!

Despite its enormous body, the golem moved quickly.

It threw its fists toward the three lifeforms, trying to drive them away from the area.

■■■■■■!

BOOOOOOM!

Although powerful impacts kept striking the floor, the ground did not crack.

Not even a small mark appeared.

Yohan, who was dodging the golem’s attacks with minimal movement, could clearly see why.

Aura covered both the ground and the walls.

It canceled out the golem’s Aura and greatly reduced the force of its attacks.

“……”

Yohan silently stared at the golem.

The goddess offered a brief impression.

[…Whoever stored the Remains here was unbelievably skilled.]

Coming from her, someone who usually dismissed everyone other than Yohan, it was extremely high praise.

Yohan had no intention of disagreeing.

The unknown person had spread Aura permanently across an enormous space large enough for a giant golem to move freely.

At the same time, that Aura had been adjusted to exactly the right level needed to cancel out the golem’s power.

And all of it was being controlled remotely.

Both in quality and quantity, such a feat was impossible without mastering Aura completely.

If the entire system was being maintained only through the power remaining in the Remains, then it was even more shocking.

BOOOOM!

Of course, this was not the time to stand around admiring it.

Aren and Isabella were helping from the side.

However, neither of them had enough power to break through the Aura surrounding the golem and deal real damage.

In the end, Yohan had to do it himself.

He had to find the core and destroy the golem.

Then he needed to discover the exact location of the Remains and obtain the clue inside them.

Blood Magic has poor compatibility with golems… but there’s no other choice.

Yohan drew his sword.

Blood and Aura began covering the blade at the same time.

After fighting for roughly ten minutes, he had understood most of the golem’s combat habits.

Since whoever created it was confident in Aura, they probably had not prepared any special defensive methods beyond that.

Even without them, a golem’s natural durability was absurdly high.

There would have been little reason to worry.

Even so, Yohan needed to locate and destroy the core as quickly as possible.

Among living beings, his mana capacity and recovery were nearly infinite.

A golem’s energy, however, was truly infinite.

If the fight became a prolonged battle, Yohan would inevitably be at a disadvantage.

Yohan stayed close while narrowly avoiding every effective attack.

This time, instead of throwing a punch, the golem charged with its entire body.

■■■■■■!

At that exact moment,

Yohan gripped his sword with both hands and took a thrusting stance.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

The body slam had enough force to burst an ordinary person apart on impact.

Yohan took it directly without using Aura to protect his body.

He was launched away and smashed into the far side of the room.

“M, mister!”

“Why didn’t you block it… Huh?”

However, only Yohan’s body had been sent flying.

His two arms and sword remained in place.

He had concentrated all his Aura into them.

They were locked against the golem’s Aura and forcing their way through it.

CRACK! CRACK!

RUMBLE…!

The tip of Yohan’s sword pierced the thick stone torso.

His blood seeped through the blade.

The golem’s movements immediately became slower.

“……”

A golem was simply a collection of inorganic pieces connected together so they could move like one organism.

That was its true nature.

Its individual parts had certainly been reinforced.

However, that reinforcement could only apply to each separate component.

It was impossible to reinforce every connection that served as joints and nerves.

Yohan’s blood searched for those connections inside the golem.

It began slowing the creature’s movements themselves.

But even this was only the beginning.

After being thrown into the wall and dropping to the floor, Yohan slowly stood.

He muttered quietly.

“…Blood Corrosion.”

SSSSSSSS…!

The moment the command ended, smoke began rising from the golem’s entire body.

Yohan’s blood, filled with mana and Aura, was literally corroding the golem.

After watching for a moment, Yohan began walking toward the enemy again.

The sword that had been stuck in the golem’s body had already returned to his hand.

“It’s been disabled… Now for the core.”

He lightly cut his wrist with the sword.

Blood burst out and scattered.

The wound closed after only a moment.

Yohan gathered the scattered blood and compressed it into the shape of a bullet.

The golem struggled to move its creaking body and drive the enemy away.

But its punch was far too slow for Yohan now.

Yohan easily dodged it.

He pointed the bullet toward the enemy and spoke again.

“Blood Bullet.”

Like firing a Magic Missile, he detonated the mana compressed at the tip of the projectile.

The mass of blood shot straight into the hole already opened in the golem’s abdomen.

■■■■■…!

At that point, the golem could no longer remain standing.

Yohan’s Blood Bullet tore through its entire body.

It swallowed the mana supporting the connections around its legs.

BOOOOM…

The golem helplessly collapsed.

Yohan searched for its core.

After three minutes, he walked directly in front of its face.

Believing the battle might finally be over, the other two cautiously approached behind him.

“…Did you defeat it?”

“No.”

Yohan answered while placing his sword against the golem’s face.

“This golem… doesn’t have a core.”

Even though its defeat was obvious, its red eyes continued glowing.

Like most magic beasts and intelligent beings, a golem usually had a power source needed to maintain its functions.

In other words, a core.

But they could not find one.

Not anywhere inside its body.

“Wait… is that even possible?”

“It’s extremely rare, but…”

Yohan briefly glanced at Aren, who was unusually silent while staring up at the golem.

Then he swallowed a sigh.

[So what are you going to do now?]

“……”

[You’re not planning to give up on the Remains, are you? This time they might really contain useful clues.]

The goddess pointed at the golem while licking her lips.

[Let’s eat it. That thing’s soul.]

A golem could not move without a power source.

If there was no core, then something else had to be moving it.

Only one possibility remained.

Something existed inside the golem that replaced the energy normally provided by a core.

For example, a spirit.

[Even if it hides its body with high level magic, it can’t hide its soul. With my power, I can drag that soul out and devour it. Once we do that, the Remains will reveal themselves too.]

The goddess had found a rare delicacy.

Saliva flowed from the corner of her mouth.

Her eyes shone as she begged Yohan.

[Let’s eat it. Let’s devour it completely. Let’s teach that pathetic soul how foolish it was to hide its body in front of us. Hurry. Hurry! Hurry, hurry, hurry!]

“……”

Then,

“I, I’ll t, try talking to it!”

Aren, who had remained silent for several minutes, suddenly spoke.

“It’s a w, water spirit! I, I can convince it!”

His eyes shone with a green yellow light they had never seen before.

Yohan crushed the noisy goddess back down to silence and asked,

“Convince it? How?”

“Sp, Spirit Language! I, I can use it!”

“…I didn’t know that.”

Yohan had been considering manifesting the goddess and allowing her to consume the spirit itself.

Aren’s option was not bad.

Yohan sat down where he stood and gestured toward the golem with his chin.

“Try it. I’ll give you ten minutes.”

SSSSS.

SSSSS.

SSSSSSSS…

The remaining traces of Yohan’s blood continued corroding the golem’s body.

Aren approached until he stood directly in front of its face.

Then he continuously spoke in words neither Yohan nor Isabella could understand.

“I know that’s Spirit Language, but… I have absolutely no idea what he’s saying. Can we really trust him?”

“I’m only checking whether he’s useful. It doesn’t matter if he fails.”

“…Right. Of course.”

Isabella scratched her forehead.

Then she carefully watched Yohan’s mood before speaking again.

“By the way… were you really chosen by an Inner God, not an Outer God? Is that how you obtained an immortal body?”

“What if I was?”

“…What could someone like me possibly do about it?”

She waved her hands as if she had somehow accused herself.

Then she muttered a little more.

“I thought you were just a lunatic… but if that’s really true, I feel like I should show some respect. There probably isn’t another human who could remain this sane after being controlled by an Inner God for hundreds of years.”

“…I’ve never really been controlled.”

“…Huh? Is that even possible? A Great Old One hasn’t been controlling its own Apostle? For hundreds of years?”

Yohan simply stared at her.

He offered no explanation.

Seeing his response, Isabella shut her mouth.

She had a strange feeling that asking any more questions might endanger her life.

“I, it worked!”

Fortunately, a shout came from ahead before ten minutes had passed.

“I convinced it! I succeeded! It s, says it’ll leave!”

Aren ran toward them with a bright smile.

As the spirit left the golem’s body, Aren proudly explained how he had convinced it.

The spirit inside the mud golem was named Raine.

He belonged to the water spirits known as Naiades.

Spirits were beings of contracts.

Raine had been serving as the golem’s power source because of a promise with his master.

For him, fulfilling that promise was the most important task.

Aren first offered to fulfill the promise in his place.

The spirit immediately rejected the idea.

The first reason was that a promise had no meaning unless he personally fulfilled it.

The second was that the promise was impossible for mortals to fulfill.

Realizing a direct approach would not work, Aren changed strategies.

He appealed to the spirit’s desire to survive.

“I, I told him that if he stayed like this, th, that mister would eat even his soul. If he c, couldn’t keep the promise anyway, wouldn’t it be b, better to at least save his life?”

It was closer to a threat than a suggestion.

However, there were no other options.

After seeing Yohan’s combat strength against the golem, anyone would have reached the same conclusion.

The spirit had experienced it personally.

In the end, he could only accept Aren’s suggestion.

“I shamelessly ask you for one promise. Do not tell anyone that Raine, a member of the water spirits Naiades, failed to fulfill his promise to his contractor.”

That was the spirit’s final request.

Aren agreed.

The spirit then left the golem without hesitation.

That was the entire story.

“That’s all! I d, did well, right?”

Aren smiled brightly.

Isabella looked at him and immediately said,

“…Why are you telling us that story? He asked you not to tell anyone.”

“……”

“Ah. Y, you’re right! Wh, what do I do?!”

“What do you mean, what do you do? We just keep quiet. Anyway, don’t tell the others. Got it?”

“Y, yeah!”

Yohan lightly tapped Aren’s shoulder as he nodded repeatedly.

“You did well.”

The determined light in the golem’s eyes faded.

The Aura and mana surrounding its rocky body gradually disappeared.

As time passed, the light in its eyes completely went out.

At that moment, it stopped being a golem.

It was now nothing more than an ordinary pile of stone.

Then,

the mana that had been inside the golem moved toward the far wall.

It illuminated an object that had been hidden there.

“…So that’s where it was.”

With a satisfied smile, Yohan walked toward his prize.

There was a small wooden post fixed into the floor.

An old piece of clothing hung from it.

That was the true form of the Remains.
