Chapter 35

Chapter 35

“……”

“…A, are we here?”

The expedition members looked around at a world completely different from the previous floors.

The dull colored sky made the silence of the city feel even stronger.

Yet there were no magic beasts nearby.

That was the greatest difference from the previous ten floors.

Perhaps because of that, the people walking through the city looked fairly peaceful.

Seeing them reminded the Imperial Expedition members of their trauma from the first floor.

Danforth confirmed that everyone, including Yohan, had safely arrived together.

He released a quiet breath.

“Phew… I think this is the first time all of us arrived together without anyone being separated. Even if we’re still grouped by faction.”

“We’ll have to wait and see whether the other races are in the same situation.”

Dexter called loudly toward someone walking along the distant road.

“E, excuse me! Over here! Sorry, but when did you settle here? You’re not from the Empire, right? Could you tell us where you came from… Mmph!”

Danforth urgently covered his mouth.

“Where do you think we are? Why are you yelling? We don’t even know what god that person worships.”

The human in the distance turned his head after hearing Dexter.

Without even blinking, he simply continued walking.

Once Danforth released him, Dexter complained.

“But they might have once been our comrades! What’s wrong with asking that much? You didn’t complain like this in the Black Magic Cult village…”

“Do those people look like comrades to you?”

“No… but… if they aren’t, then how can humans be living here?”

“……”

Other than Yohan, Danforth was the only person with Dungeon experience beyond the tenth floor.

But even he did not know everything about this world.

Yohan stepped in when Danforth looked unsure where to begin explaining.

“We’re uninvited guests.”

Everyone turned toward him.

“The great Inner Gods are desperate to show their magnificent existence to lesser creatures. They talk about influence and faith, but in reality, they’re little different from lunatics starving for attention.”

Yohan briefly glanced at the goddess sleeping inside his clothes.

He swallowed a sigh.

“Yet those same beings are desperate to kill every member of the Four Great Factions. Strange, isn’t it? If everyone dies, there’ll be no creatures left to wet themselves in terror after seeing their horrifying faces. No one left to hear their grand and disgusting schemes and become fanatical believers.”

“That… is true.”

“Someone is worshipping them in our place. Those are the residents here. Thanks to them, the gods can freely spread death among us. And they’ll keep doing it.”

Yohan now glanced toward a group of elves appearing from the opposite side.

“Still, there’s no reason to hate the residents. These people are pitiful too. They didn’t come here because they wanted to. They don’t serve those beings because they wanted to either.”

“……”

“But you must remain careful. They may look similar to us, but the natives here are completely different creatures.”

A god only held meaning because someone believed.

Fear only held meaning because someone existed to feel afraid.

“Don’t forget that.”

Dexter closed his mouth after Yohan’s simple explanation.

Now it was time to act.

“All right, what should we do now? The conditions for clearing the eleventh and twelfth floors are relatively loose… Should we reorganize here first?”

Danforth nodded and added his opinion.

“I’ve only reached the fifteenth floor, so maybe I’m not the best person to say this… but before we reach the twentieth floor, we need to train these idiots mentally. If we can keep the Apostles under control, this is one of the best places to build resistance against the mental attacks of the Great Old Ones.”

“…You think surprisingly like I do, Danforth Corsi.”

From Yohan, it was close to the highest praise possible.

Danforth smiled faintly.

Then he looked bitterly across his subordinates.

“You can’t clear the deeper floors without becoming a little insane.”

“That’s true.”

“The Were faction has the War Maniac’s blessing, which protects them from mental attacks to some degree. The elves have spirits doing something similar. But we have nothing. We’ll have to build resistance ourselves, won’t we?”

“If that’s the plan, I’ll gladly help. Sounds entertaining.”

The expedition members’ faces immediately darkened.

Yohan seemed to enjoy their reactions.

He lightly grabbed Dexter’s shoulder.

“Then why don’t we start with something simple… and go sightseeing?”

“…W, where?”

Yohan’s gaze moved toward a river district faintly visible to the northeast.

“The museum.”

Drip, drip.

Drip.

Drip…

The sound of falling water in the distance slowly stopped.

“……”

A man had been tied tightly to a pillar.

He listened carefully to the sounds around him.

Where was he?

How had he ended up like this?

Who had done this to him?

He remembered nothing.

Come to think of it, the man had always been unusually weak at remembering things.

Everyone had at least one entertaining childhood memory.

He had none.

He did not remember who his parents were.

He did not know whether he had siblings.

He could not remember whether he had ever married.

He only knew a few things.

He was a healthy man who looked to be in his thirties.

He lived in this city by hunting magic beasts for survival.

He had companions named Mr. ■■ and Mr. ■■■.

That was almost everything he knew.

He remembered carrying magic beast meat back to his home.

Then something struck the back of his head with tremendous force.

He lost consciousness immediately.

He guessed that he had been hit with some well made blunt weapon.

Having hunted magic beasts using many different weapons, he knew a fair amount about them.

He wondered whether the sound of dripping water he had heard until shortly after waking up had actually been blood.

But it did not matter.

His entire body was tied so tightly that he could barely move.

He had no way to check.

“……”

Turning his head, he saw a faint light coming from the far side.

A gap.

There was a gap.

This place was clearly dark because something like a curtain covered it.

The man thought about the material binding his arms and legs.

Perhaps they were not ordinary ropes.

They might have been bundles of thin iron wire.

Every time he pulled with all his strength, pain cut into his wrists as if they were about to separate.

Something thin pressed deeply into his skin.

That feeling convinced him.

Escaping normally was impossible.

So the man screamed as loudly as he could.

Most of his words were pleas for someone to save him.

In truth, he already suspected shouting was pointless.

The only reason he was still alive and merely tied up was probably because someone intended to use him for something.

It was not because he was lucky.

But if that was true,

why had they tied him here?

That was what he could not understand.

He received an answer soon enough.

“I apologize for saying this so suddenly, but you’re going to die soon.”

The person who entered after pulling aside the curtain introduced himself as Rogers.

“Don’t be too disappointed. Being hunted and killed by a magic beast would be miserable. But being offered to Him is an honor. He will grant you eternal life.”

“Wh, what are you talking about? Who is ‘He’?”

“Oh, I forgot to explain. But there’s no need for me to explain. Soon, His true appearance will be revealed before you. Once you see His magnificent and majestic form, you will naturally understand everything.”

The man raised his voice as Rogers casually moved around.

He had already been told he was going to die.

Yet his cries were not attempts to deny death.

He had only one question.

Who was He?

Every time Rogers mentioned Him, the man felt an indescribable chill.

He felt an uncontrollable urge to tear off his bound hands and feet if necessary and escape from this place.

“Oh dear… You’re so impatient. Wait a little longer until the preparations are complete, my friend. The frame that will hold you is already prepared, but the liquid that will fill you still needs to boil a little longer.”

That was when light slowly began spreading inside the area.

It had been separated as an adults only exhibition section.

All kinds of grotesque objects were displayed within.

There were corpses that had died while screaming, preserved and turned into wax figures.

There were stuffed specimens of bizarre monsters.

Even the man, an experienced magic beast hunter, had never seen creatures like them before.

The most horrifying statue of all stood in the center.

It was covered in an old cloth.

The cloth was thick.

Its surface was strangely uneven and damaged.

The man wondered whether it had been made from human skin peeled away while the victims were still alive, then roughly sewn together.

The cloth did not completely cover the object.

A sharp horn like shape stuck out from the right side.

Through a gap near the lower left, he could see a wrinkled claw.

He could not imagine what kind of creature the statue represented.

The man trembled uncontrollably.

Saliva ran from his mouth.

Rogers took out a filthy handkerchief and wiped it away.

Then he smiled.

Rogers suddenly turned around.

He dropped to his knees.

Facing the barely covered being, he lowered his head in worship.

“Oh, ohhh… Finally! Finally, He has noticed the offering! I shall now present the sweet prey I promised several days ago! Like the previous six hundred and twenty one offerings, this man shall become another exhibit created to honor and praise You!”

The man’s terror reached its limit.

He felt an unknown force pulling his body forward.

His teeth violently struck one another.

Strange cries poured from Rogers’s mouth and filled his mind.

The man did not even notice when his wrists and ankles snapped apart.

“Ia! Ia! God hungers for the blood of life!”

Only then did the man begin his desperate struggle for survival.

It was far too late.

Rogers dragged him before the blasphemous and magnificent lifeform that the man had mistaken for a statue.

At last, Rogers removed the skin cloth for the long awaited meal.

The man’s consciousness disappeared completely.

The blood scattered across the floor flowed toward the center.

The being sitting upon the massive throne swallowed the man whole.

It showed no reaction.

No satisfaction.

No emotion.

Its body slowly became stiff once again.

Rogers nodded in satisfaction.

Then the cloth was placed back over the being.

The glowing stones illuminating the adults only area slowly lost their light.

Darkness once again covered everything.

The master of this place lived inside the museum.

No.

Perhaps the entire city itself was one small museum.

That was why they had decided to call this place by that name.

No.

He had wanted them to call it by that name.

The Museum of Rhan Tegoth.
