Chapter 47

Chapter 47

The two Apostles silently exchanged looks for a moment.

Only one priest in the entire temple was capable of speaking.

Yohan had already identified him.

Even so, he tilted his head as if trying to remember something.

Then he said,

“That voice… Pickman.”

“……”

“Still faithfully serving as an Apostle? Unexpected.”

“Enough. Let’s go outside first. There is no way He would be pleased to know you are here.”

Yohan had no reason to refuse.

He quietly followed Pickman out of the temple.

Even from the plaza around one hundred meters from the temple, most of the city could be seen below.

Priests moved busily among the faint lights scattered throughout the city.

Yohan knew exactly what such a scene meant.

He touched his lips and asked,

“Looks like someone broke the laws of the city. A serious law, at that.”

“…I did not realize you cared about the laws of Zul-Bha-Sair.”

“I still don’t. But if you visit more than a hundred times, you naturally remember things.”

Pickman waved one hand as if surrendering.

Then he explained the blasphemous incident that had occurred inside the temple.

Three dark mages had stolen the body of a woman who had died only recently and were escaping from the city.

“…So we are currently pursuing them. They’ll be caught soon enough. The desert is our territory. Dark mage or not, ordinary humans cannot escape us ghouls.”

“Naturally.”

Pickman looked suspiciously at Yohan’s relaxed response.

“Surely… you were not cooperating with those dark mages? If you were, even you would not escape punishment. Stealing a corpse offered to the temple is a serious crime.”

“If I were working with them, I wouldn’t have used such a clumsy method to steal the corpse.”

“…That is true. You would probably have deceived us priests using some cowardly and clever method.”

It was an honest assessment and an admission.

Yet his tone sounded strangely hostile.

Still, nothing Yohan had said was wrong.

Pickman could not question him further.

“Well, if you were offering to capture those criminals for us, that would be different… but I assume that is not why you’re here.”

“I wouldn’t refuse if we made a deal, but you don’t seem to need any help.”

“Correct. We don’t. Stop having unnecessary thoughts and descend to the next floor already. Your continued presence here is practically a disaster for us.”

“Calling me a disaster hurts my feelings.”

Yohan said it without meaning a word.

Instead of sighing, Pickman released a long howl toward the sky.

Then he crossed his arms.

“Enough small talk. Why did you come to the temple at this hour?”

“I have a proposal.”

Yohan continued with a faint smile.

“I want to form an alliance with two groups, you ghouls and the Nightgaunts.”

“An alliance…”

Even Pickman, who had experienced countless incidents as the guardian of the city, found the proposal extremely strange.

Not temporarily borrowing strength.

An actual alliance?

Yohan Blake had never been the kind of man who cared about faction politics.

Pickman rubbed his broad shoulder and asked,

“You are making that proposal while fully aware that we are creatures who enjoy human flesh?”

“There are countless creatures like that in this world.”

He was not wrong.

Considering the familiars, creations, and servants existing in this world, ghouls were actually rather moderate.

They occasionally kidnapped humans or transformed them into their own kind.

But it did not happen often.

And ghouls offered at least a small amount of mercy to the humans who died during such events.

The ghouls who called themselves priests on the twelfth floor were even gentler than ordinary ghouls.

They never attacked someone merely because of blasphemous behavior, insults, or words filled with contempt.

As long as that person did not break the laws.

The laws were somewhat stricter for outsiders than for residents.

Even so, there were simply too many monsters in this world that tormented intelligent beings for no reason at all.

Of course, this was partly because Zul-Bha-Sair provided its ghouls with a steady supply of humans in the form of corpses.

Still, the ghouls here could be considered quite merciful.

But even then,

the absolute difference between their positions and those of outsiders could not be ignored.

“…Mordiggian has little interest in struggles over influence, but that does not change what you outsiders fundamentally are.”

Pickman exposed his sharp teeth and stepped directly in front of Yohan.

A yellow hostility slowly appeared within his round, dark gray pupils.

“The home of those who came from outside is the Dark Lands. Our home, after being summoned here by Them, is the Dungeon. You outsiders destroy the Dungeon under the name of liberation and point your blades toward the gods who are our masters. Hundreds of deities have lost their influence and fallen asleep because of that process. You were deeply involved as well.”

“……”

“And above all… the One We Originally Serve, the One Who Spits the Black Flame, would never accept this. He is also one of the beings you intend to clear. If He learned that I even received a proposal like this, I might die simply for hearing it. That is how serious this matter is.”

“That was in the past. Either way, the god you currently serve is not Him. It’s the God Who Never Sleeps.”

“Even so, I cannot accept it.”

“…I see.”

When Yohan fell silent, Pickman attempted to end the conversation firmly.

“Considering the countless corpses you have offered to Zul-Bha-Sair in the past, I will keep this matter to myself. Now leave.”

Pickman tried to push him away.

Yohan brushed off his hand and changed the subject.

“Then how about this?”

“What ridiculous proposal are you planning now…”

“Give me an official guarantee. When I eventually reach the Dreamlands, I want to receive assistance from the Nightgaunts. Even if it is only once.”

“…Why should I go through that trouble?”

“Because I can deal with the two groups currently causing problems for you.”

Pickman’s eyes widened slightly at the unexpected offer.

Considering Yohan’s strength and personality, it was certainly a remarkable proposal.

But Pickman was not especially interested.

After all,

punishing those groups was easy enough for the priests themselves.

“The dark mages and the bandits will soon be captured by the priests. Once the priests drag those blasphemers back to the temple, He will personally judge them.”

“The dark mages will leave the city soon. They understand this desert far better than ordinary fools. They even know how to deal with a Sand Giant. Even for you, chasing them down and capturing them would take quite a while. At least three days. Maybe as long as a week.”

“No… why do you know that? You said earlier that you weren’t cooperating with them…”

“I wasn’t. Not at all. I simply saw them while traveling through the desert toward the city.”

The ghoul Apostle was left speechless.

Yohan continued.

“You could capture the dark mages and torture a confession from them. That would let you connect the bandits to the same incident. But if you invest too many priests into chasing the dark mages, the bandits will leave the city before you return.”

“……”

“You can’t deploy dozens of priests just because of a handful of blasphemers. You barely have enough people to manage the city as it is. Right?”

Pickman felt as though he was slowly being pulled into Yohan’s pace.

Even though he had planned to oppose everything, he was already beginning to accept the logic.

“You make it sound as if you plan to eliminate both groups at once… but even for you, that should be difficult alone. While you pursue the dark mages, the bandits will leave the city. You are not about to ask us to deal with them, are you?”

“Of course not. I didn’t come here alone this time.”

“…What does that mean?”

“Anyway, we have a deal. I’ll leave the introduction to the Nightgaunts to you.”

Yohan waved at the blankly staring Pickman and turned around.

His steps away from the temple seemed strangely cheerful.

The next day.

After another eventful night, morning arrived safely.

Watching the friendly and energetic residents of Zul-Bha-Sair created a strange sense of regret.

Serden looked perfectly normal on the outside.

Inside, he was sighing repeatedly.

“Haa… I thought we’d be able to enjoy ourselves a little longer.”

On the way out, he returned to the tavern from the previous day and asked about the outsiders who had stayed there.

He did not care if his method was petty.

If someone wronged him, he needed to repay it.

If someone looked down on him, he needed to force them to show respect and fear.

But the answer he received was disappointing.

“…They left? Already? Where?”

“I don’t know that much… They said there was somewhere they needed to go and rushed out.”

After asking when they checked out, he learned it had been five in the morning.

They had left the city one hour before Serden’s group.

“They looked so confident, but I guess they were terrified inside. Damn brats.”

“Well, Boss, your reputation is known across the entire region. A little embarrassment is better than dying.”

“Haa… Can’t be helped. We’ll have to find someone else to take our anger out on. I won’t feel better otherwise.”

“Seriously, you’re the worst kind of person, Boss.”

They crossed the enormous market and headed toward the huge arched gate in front.

No toll was required to enter or leave the city.

However, travelers had to provide the guards with their names and the number of people in their group.

After casually reporting to a guard who looked extremely tired, they passed through the gate.

And there,

they saw them.

The arrogant outsiders who had rented the tavern the previous night.

“…Hmm?”

The expedition members had been waiting on the opposite side of the entrance for more than an hour.

Danforth complained on behalf of the group.

“If I’d known you were going to take this long, we could’ve come out later. I almost died from the heat.”

Standing beneath the blazing sun, Danforth pulled back his hood and showed his face.

Only then did Serden recognize him.

He approached with a surprised expression.

Five people from each side faced one another on the dry ground.

Serden looked at Danforth, who did not even blink despite standing directly before him.

A cold smile spread across his lips.

“I thought you’d have run away by now… You’ve got more courage than I expected.”

“Courage, my ass. I just didn’t want to watch human garbage like you keep running around freely.”

“…Where are the other races who were with you? You’d have a better chance if you brought them.”

“If we brought them too, the balance would be completely ruined. You’re still a bandit leader. You don’t want to die in a pathetic and embarrassing way, do you?”

Crack.

Serden’s smile finally disappeared after repeated provocation.

“…I’ll make you wish you’d run away, even if it meant embarrassing yourself.”

“Please do, frog in a well.”

Both silently drew the swords at their waists.

Their companions behind them also entered combat stances.

A group of dromedary camels carrying many corpses passed beside them.

A cloud of dust rose into the air.

A strong northeastern wind from the city blew the dust toward the desert.

“Wipe them out, boys!”

“Show them the difference in experience, Imperial Expedition!”

At the same time,

ten outsiders charged toward one another.

Outsiders from another nation,

against outsiders from beyond the Dungeon.
