Chapter 1

Chapter 1. Not D-Rank, but S-Rank

‘I really lived like a complete idiot.’

Rain poured down over the desolate wilderness.

I lay collapsed on the ground, slowly dying.

What exactly had my life been for?

‘This wasn’t why I became a Contractor.’

It was the age of Contractors.

After spatial collisions with parallel worlds caused monsters to appear everywhere, Contractors who formed contracts with Constellations and obtained superhuman powers began dominating the world.

‘I wanted to succeed too.’

Dreaming of a bright future, I became a Contractor.

But I failed.

The only Constellation I could form a contract with was a D-rank Constellation—the lowest rank possible.

I didn’t even receive a single decent buff.

All I did was wander from place to place, struggling pointlessly.

And after living like that…

I eventually ended up dying like this.

‘What the hell went wrong?’

The answer was obvious.

‘It’s because I contracted with that damn D-rank Constellation!’

A Contractor couldn’t simply choose whichever Constellation they wanted.

If someone stood out while they were still an aspiring Contractor, they could receive contract offers from multiple Constellations.

But more than half of all aspiring Contractors never received even a single offer.

Those people would offer tribute at a temple that connected them with a suitable Constellation and form a contract that way.

If they were extremely lucky, they might even contract with an S-rank Constellation…

But if they were unlucky, they would end up contracted to a low-rank Constellation.

And I belonged firmly to the horribly unlucky group.

‘Maybe I should’ve just given up on becoming a Contractor the moment I drew a D-rank.’

Once, I had posted on an anonymous internet forum.

[I accidentally contracted with a D-rank Constellation. What am I supposed to do from now on?]

The very first comment had been:

[I recommend suicide.]

And the second comment was:

[Hurry up and get hit by a truck so you can reincarnate.]

That was how hopeless my situation had been.

People were literally recommending that I reset my life.

Thinking back on it now, maybe choosing a quick death back then really would have been better.

It certainly would have been better than suffering endlessly before dying miserably like this.

Who knew?

Maybe resetting your life was actually possible.

‘If only I could be born again…’

Tears mixed with blood flowed down my face as I screamed inside my heart.

‘Then next time, I’ll definitely choose an S-rank Constellation…!’

[The ‘Great Will’ has detected your intense desire.]

[The ‘Great Will’ will begin determining whether your desire can be fulfilled.]

[Judgment: Success.]

[The ‘Great Will’ will reincarnate you according to your wish.]

[You will now be reincarnated as an S-rank Constellation.]

What the hell is this?
