Chapter 13

Chapter 13 — The Most Lowly and Noble One (3)

A carriage that had left Buwan Port entered a forest road heading south.

It was the carriage carrying the women of the Hae family.

As night fell, the forest became covered in pitch-black shadows of trees that seemed tall enough to pierce the sky.

The coachman cracked his whip against the horses, urging them to move even faster.

His desperate haste made them look like people fleeing somewhere while being chased.

Whispered voices came from inside the carriage.

“This place is seriously creepy. I never want to come here again.”

“Haemora-nim told us, remember? On the Gwido, we must never make eye contact with anything, and we must never be lured by any sound.”

“Right. She said this is a road where wandering spirits roam.”

The carriage passed between two sotdae poles standing on either side of the road.

At that moment, the sound of bells began ringing in their left ears, while the cries of a young child echoed in their right.

The Gwido—the Road of Ghosts—had opened.

At first glance, the Gwido looked no different from an ordinary road used by humans.

However, it was actually a space belonging to another dimension, invisible to ordinary people.

Because of that, traveling through the Gwido could allow someone to reach a faraway destination much faster or secretly meet someone without being noticed.

Of course, it was also an extremely dangerous place where everything from the gods of mountains and rivers to vicious hungry ghosts and yakshas wandered freely.

It was absolutely not a place ordinary humans should ever enter.

Before long, all kinds of ghosts appeared along the road through the thick fog.

Some carried lanterns, while others held enormous sickles as they hurried along on their own paths.

Torn pieces of cloth hung from dead, withered trees, fluttering in the wind with eerie rustling sounds.

That was when Hoyeon attacked the Hae family's carriage.

To the coachman's eyes, he probably looked like a crow descending straight from the heavens.

Without making the slightest sound, Hoyeon drove a sharp needle into the coachman's neck and kicked him away.

The man tumbled onto the road without even managing to scream.

Ghosts immediately began gathering around his fallen body.

“What happened?”

“What's going on?”

Startled by the heavy thud of something falling, the women of the Hae family asked in frightened voices.

But their new coachman gave no answer.

Even so, none of them dared to open the carriage door.

They had no idea what kind of evil presence outside might attack them the moment they did.

At last, the carriage stopped in front of a magnificent mansion at the end of the Gwido.

A crimson flag bearing the symbol of the Hae family fluttered above it, making it obvious that this was one of their strongholds.

The mansion looked as though someone had taken the royal palace in the capital, Hongyang, and recreated it here exactly.

Hoyeon was dumbfounded.

If this wasn't rebellion, then what was?

They had practically built a kingdom of their own inside another dimension.

Members of the Hae family, their faces covered with black cloth, began stepping out of the carriage one by one.

They formed a long procession and gathered in the courtyard before the mansion.

Hoyeon quietly followed behind them.

As expected of a major religious gathering for the clan, the atmosphere was solemn and majestic.

Braziers positioned according to the twelve directions burned with fierce flames.

In the center of the courtyard stood an enormous water basin.

Inside it, hundreds of turtles and snakes writhed and twisted around one another.

Atop the platform in front sat the family head, Haemora.

Among the Five Great Noble Families of Hui Kingdom, she was the only woman to hold the position of family head.

Naturally, her authority was immense.

It was said that she possessed supernatural powers and the ability to foresee the future.

Others claimed she had the ability to manipulate people's hearts and make them obey her.

Without her power, the Hae family might have already lost its position among the Five Great Noble Families during the previous generation.

Although she was already over forty years old, she looked exactly the same as when she had first become the family head in her teens.

Her red lips and the vivid crimson clothing tightly wrapped around her body gave her a bewitching air.

Several black spiders crawled over her clothes, constantly shifting positions to form different versions of the Hae family's emblem—a black sun.

“Young Master Nam Geumdo has arrived.”

At the attendant's announcement, a young boy walked up onto the platform surrounded by guards.

He looked around ten years old.

His features and mannerisms were charming, and his smiling eyes were especially adorable.

The boy casually took the seat of honor above even Haemora's position and gave everyone a bright smile.

Everyone immediately dropped to the ground and bowed their heads.

Nam Geumdo...

Hoyeon lowered his forehead to the ground along with the others while thinking over the name the attendant had announced.

Interesting.

So there was a boy carrying the Nam surname whom I knew nothing about.

Hoyeon carefully observed the child.

Then—

He froze on the spot.

To everyone else's eyes, the boy appeared to be an ordinary child.

But Hoyeon could tell.

That boy was not human.

“Family Head, there is something important I must tell you.”

Geumdo spoke to Haemora in the clear, bright voice unique to a young child.

“Please tell me anything you wish.”

Haemora replied with a smile.

Her expression was far gentler and softer than the venomous face Hoyeon had last seen.

“Last night, while I was walking around the residence, someone dressed in black appeared and chased after me, saying he would kill me.”

“Who would dare do such a thing to you, Young Master?”

Haemora pulled Geumdo into her arms and gently patted his back.

Geumdo buried himself against her with a frightened expression before continuing.

“After being chased for some time, I was struck by a sword and collapsed. But when I regained consciousness, I was lying on my bed.”

“……”

“But among the people who came to today's gathering, I saw someone who resembled that man. I'm terrified that he may have come here to harm me.”

Haemora's expression changed instantly.

She ordered her subordinates in an angry voice.

“How could an intruder possibly enter the Gwido...? Seal the entrance immediately and check whether anyone here does not bear the mark of the Black Sun!”

The private soldiers moved in perfect order and blocked the main gates.

The members of the Hae family began murmuring among themselves, unable to understand what was happening.

Hoyeon also looked around tensely for an escape route.

He was no different from a rat trapped inside a jar.

“Now that Geumdo's existence has been discovered, that person must never be allowed to leave here alive!”

Haemora's sharp voice rang throughout the courtyard.

A pitch-black shadow emerged from the breath leaving her lips.

It began flying around the gathering, examining people's faces one by one.

Hoyeon might have to fight his way out directly.

His hand closed around the hilt of his sword.

If he died here on the Gwido, it would be a miserable death where not even his soul could be comforted.

And worse...

He would never be able to return to that person again.

Just then—

A bright flash suddenly burst through the air.

Hallucinated sounds began flooding everyone's ears.

A Buddhist sutra being recited backward.

Laughter.

And the bizarre noise of someone randomly plucking the strings of an instrument.

It became impossible to think clearly.

The gathering immediately descended into chaos.

Everyone desperately tried to flee in different directions.

Braziers toppled over.

People running away collided with those dragging horses from their stalls.

No matter how absolute the family head's authority was, controlling terrified people in the face of such supernatural phenomena was no easy task.

Hoyeon had no idea who had caused the disturbance.

But from his perspective, it couldn't have come at a better time.

He found the carriage he had arrived in and loaded the daughters of the Hae family back inside.

Then, before leaving, he turned around one last time.

Geumdo was still held in Haemora's arms.

The boy wore a chilling smile.

His face was filled with an eerie, unnatural aura as he watched the chaos of the human world unfold before him.

Hoyeon couldn't take his eyes off him for a long moment.

Before leaving the Gwido, Hoyeon deliberately turned the horses in another direction.

There was still one final matter he needed to deal with.

He opened the carriage door and dragged the screaming daughters of the Hae family outside.

There was no trace left of the beautifully dressed young women who had admired treasures at the inn in Buwan Port.

Their makeup was smeared with tears, while their carefully arranged hair had fallen apart into a mess.

Watching them tremble in fear that a ghost might appear in the middle of the Gwido was almost pitiful.

“Why did your sister, Hae Eunseong, not attend the Hae family's gathering?”

Hoyeon immediately began questioning them.

“Our eldest sister does nothing but follow those priests around, and she even gives her money away as donations to Beopsindang.”

“She skipped today too, claiming she was sick. Though who knows? Maybe she's been locked up and is being punished by the Family Head.”

Hoyeon decided to dig deeper into the Hae family's affairs.

“Black magic inevitably causes its power to echo back upon its source. Are there no people serving as the source of these spells or being used as sacrifices?”

“We don't know anything about that! We really don't! And we don't want to know!”

“When did Nam Geumdo begin appearing at these gatherings? What exactly is he?”

“We heard that the young master is Haemora-nim's illegitimate son. They said he was born with powers that would restore our family to greatness.”

There was nothing but fear on the women's faces.

They did not appear to be lying.

Apparently, within the Hae family, the details were kept secret from everyone except the family head and the elders.

“The Family Head said that when the day of the Sipojeol ceremony arrives, the world will belong to the Hae family.”

The dark magic that the Hae family had secretly strengthened for many years was finally beginning to spread its influence in earnest.

Humiliating the royal family and destroying a single noble house was no longer the limit.

They might throw the entire world into chaos.

Perhaps realizing too late that she had been overwhelmed by Hoyeon's presence and had revealed far too many secrets about her family, one of the women suddenly screamed and lunged toward him.

“More importantly, how dare a lowly thing like you speak so rudely in our presence?”

Hoyeon lightly tapped the backs of the women's knees with his sword sheath.

Their legs instantly lost strength.

They dropped to their knees with their heads lowered, as though they had bowed before him of their own accord.

“Silence. I use respectful speech for no one except my Little Master.”

Standing there in black clothes, staring down at the women with an expression devoid of blood or tears, Hoyeon looked almost like a messenger from the underworld.

“From now on, you will write letters apologizing for the insult you committed against Lady Rang.”

“Apologize? You think we'll do that just because you tell us to?”

Hoyeon stepped behind them and drove a needle into the back of each woman's neck.

“Those needles are coated in a deadly poison. Within a little over ten minutes, all of you will die.”

“……”

“If you don't want to die, you'll have to cut your fingertips and drain the poison from your bodies through the blood.”

The poison quickly spread.

The women's faces turned deathly pale.

In the end, having completely given up, they bit into the tips of their own index fingers and tore away the flesh.

Then, with blood dripping from their fingers, they wrote their letters of apology.

A short while later, Hoyeon confirmed that the women inside the carriage had collapsed one after another, seemingly unconscious.

Now all he had to do was ask some random traveler to return the carriage to the Hae family's residence.

Then everything would end without leaving a trace.

After all, the women would have no memory of the last several hours.

Just then, from the far side of the Gwido, a ghost with a completely black face came bouncing toward the carriage.

It was Heukgeomgwi.

Its mouth was split all the way to its ears in a grin so disturbing that merely looking at it sent chills down the spine.

Even though the horses were wearing blinders, they seemed to sense the ghost's overwhelming presence.

Terrified, they raised their front legs and snorted wildly.

“So it was you who helped me escape from the Hae family's gathering.”

“……”

When Hoyeon had been a child and his life had hung by a thread, he had once set foot in Hell.

Having personally experienced a world every bit as horrific and chaotic as Hell itself, Hoyeon had grown into a man who would no longer even blink at the scenery of the Gwido.

The ghost grinned.

“The mortal world is still suffocating and exhausting, isn't it? Why don't you come to Hell like I told you and become the King of Darkness?”

Hoyeon scoffed at the ghost's offer and replied with dignity.

“Have you ever heard the phrase Jeoljicheontong?”

“……”

“It means the road connecting earth and heaven must be severed.”

He looked directly toward the ghost.

“It is best when humans and ghosts do not interfere with each other's lives.”

“Oh, really? That's unfortunate. I thought something interesting was finally about to begin.”

The ghost's grin widened.

“Still, we'll see each other again soon. I have a feeling that's exactly what's going to happen.”

Heukgeomgwi chuckled once more before bouncing away and disappearing deeper into the Gwido.

Hoyeon urged the carriage faster.

Before long, it passed between the two sotdae poles.

The moment it did, they escaped from the Gwido.

The hellish landscape disappeared.

And once again, the carriage raced down the dark forest road.
