Chapter 28

Chapter 28 – Canada Bombing Operation (3)

Lisboa Spice Auction House.

The chief auctioneer picked up a jar of Canada syrup, smelled it, and tasted a little.

“So this is Canada syrup? Just as I heard, it has a very unique aroma and flavor. I think it’ll sell quite well.”

Thanks to pressure from Chairman Bonmati, the Canada syrup had reached the chief auctioneer without going through any of the usual procedures.

Normally, it would have taken more than a week.

Hearing the chief auctioneer’s favorable opinion, Diego immediately started selling the product hard.

“It has a sweetness similar to sugar, but it’s much cheaper. It should be more than enough to serve as a substitute for sugar.”

Maple syrup could never truly replace sugar.

Sugar came in powdered form, making it easy to store and transport. Its distinct aroma was weak, so it could be added to almost any dish without causing problems. On top of that, it could be stored for such a long time that it practically had no expiration date.

Maple syrup, on the other hand, was a liquid, making it inconvenient to store and transport. Its distinctive caramel scent, dark color, and faint woody aroma also limited the kinds of dishes it could be used in.

Most importantly, if stored for too long, mold could grow on it.

Of course, there was no way the chief auctioneer, a veteran who had spent years working at this auction house, would fail to notice those problems.

But after Chairman Bonmati had personally told him to make things as convenient as possible, he could hardly ruin everything by saying, Stop trying such an obvious trick.

“Of course. I’ll make sure to properly explain it to the spice wholesalers participating in the auction.”

Diego held up several small jars filled with Canada syrup and spoke to the auctioneer.

“I’d like these samples distributed among those wholesalers.”

“Oh, you came well prepared. I’ll take care of that for you.”

“And I’d also like you to prepare a ‘Product Outlook Report.’”

The chief auctioneer’s eyebrow twitched.

A Product Outlook Report was something like an economic newspaper article that explained whether a product was worth investing in and what price range would be appropriate.

In other words, Diego had just asked him to manipulate the report.

“Ahem. Even if Lord Bonmati asked me to assist you, going that far would be—”

“Why don’t you take your family on a nice trip with this?”

Diego casually held out a pouch of money.

The auctioneer picked it up, weighed it in his hand, and showed signs of refusing.

“Ahem! Even if Chairman Bonmati specifically told me to make things convenient for you—”

“One moment.”

Diego rummaged around the waist of his trousers and pulled out another pouch.

The chief auctioneer immediately snatched it.

With his years of experience, he could roughly estimate how much money was inside both pouches just by feeling their weight.

His expression changed completely.

“Hahaha! Don’t worry. I’ll write the report immediately.”

Diego grinned, showing his teeth.

As expected, my lord was right! If money can’t solve a problem, it just means you didn’t use enough money!

For some reason, Eric seemed even greater to him today.

Just before the Canada auction began.

The chief auctioneer gathered the spice wholesalers.

“Here, try this. It’s a new product. A syrup called ‘Canada.’”

“Syrup? Someone actually submitted something that expensive for auction?”

Normal syrup was made from sugar, so naturally, it was expensive.

“No. This one is extremely cheap. You’ll be shocked when you hear the price.”

After saying that, the auctioneer handed them the Product Outlook Report.

“Read this.”

The wholesalers’ faces became expressions of pure shock as they read it.

“Impossible! A substitute for sugar?!”

“Good heavens. It’s incredibly cheap. You can’t even compare it to sugar.”

Then the wholesalers began watching one another carefully.

Eventually, one merchant who lacked any sense of caution made the mistake of speaking first.

“Wouldn’t this make sugar prices collapse? We should secure as much Canada as possible, even if we have to buy it at a high price.”

“Ahem! Ahem! If the price rises too much, won’t that cause trouble for all of us?”

In other words, he was suggesting that they avoid competing too aggressively at the auction.

The chief auctioneer, who had been listening, immediately shouted.

“You people! This auction will be conducted fairly! If I see even the first sign of collusion, every last one of you will be thrown into prison! Remember that!”

“Oh, come on, Auctioneer! That wasn’t what we meant—”

“Hmph! I’ll be watching you!”

Now the wholesalers would have no choice but to compete against one another under the auctioneer’s watchful eyes.

However, they had silently reached an agreement regarding sugar.

None of them intended to trade sugar for the time being.

This was exactly the situation Eric Marcel had intended to create.

Of course, Chairman Bonmati had helped get Canada into the auction.

But even without Bonmati, something similar probably would have happened eventually.

Merchants who knew little about Canada’s true characteristics would naturally be blinded by greed and jump at the opportunity.

Now, all that remained was to get a high price at auction and let the greedy merchants rush to buy as much as possible.

A crowd of wholesalers rushed toward Diego.

Before the auction began, they wanted to find out how much stock they could secure.

“You said you came from Marcel? How much of this Canada did you bring?”

Diego pointed at one of the large standard water barrels commonly used aboard merchant ships.

“We brought around five hundred barrels of this size, and we can produce more than six hundred and thirty barrels every month.”

The wholesalers were shocked.

That was an enormous amount.

It was far more than Lisboa alone could consume.

But momentary greed blinded the wholesalers, and every one of them wanted to buy Canada syrup.

Sugar was currently far too expensive, while Canada syrup was incredibly cheap in comparison.

“We’ll buy all of it for now.”

“Would you also like to sign a contract for next month’s supply?”

“What are you talking about? How can we sign a contract for goods that don’t even exist yet?”

Diego proposed a forward contract and explained how it worked.

“Ah, I see. It’s similar to buying the harvest of an entire field in advance.”

“Exactly. We’ll determine the forward price of Canada based on today’s auction price. Next month, the month after that, three months from now—however far ahead you want, contracts can be made.”

Then Diego showed them Marcel’s official seal and certificate of guarantee, as well as Chairman Bonmati’s letter of introduction.

“This should be enough proof of our creditworthiness. You can trade with us without worry.”

“Oh! So you’re a major figure after all. Hahaha!”

Either way, the final auction price today would definitely not be cheap.

Because of expectations that Canada could replace sugar, it would be sold for much more than its actual value.

Even so, the wholesalers couldn’t refuse Diego’s proposal.

Their minds were already filled with a simple formula.

Canada can replace sugar.

Canada is cheap.

Sugar is expensive.

Soon, the auction for Canada began.

Naturally, it sold at a high price.

Using that winning bid as the basis, Diego also completed forward contracts for future Canada shipments.

He ended up selling nearly an entire year’s worth of Canada in advance.

Money flowed out of the merchants’ pockets and into Diego’s hands almost instantly.

That immediately affected the sugar auction that followed.

The merchants who had imported sugar began complaining.

“What’s wrong with sugar prices today?”

“Apparently, a huge amount of some cheap product similar to sugar was released.”

“How much did they release for it to get this bad?”

“Not just physical stock. Apparently, everyone spent a fortune signing forward contracts too. They used up even the money they would’ve spent buying sugar.”

One merchant stomped his feet and cursed in disbelief.

“Those lunatics! Sugar is white gold! They have no eye for value!”

“Hey. ‘White gold’ refers to salt.”

“Whatever!”

“Either way, sugar prices will probably keep dropping for the next few days.”

Just as that sugar merchant predicted, once the spice merchants invested their money into Canada, liquidity dried up in the market and sugar prices began collapsing.

Then another report came out claiming that Canada would reduce sugar’s market share.

That poured even more fuel onto the falling market.

Of course, the person who wrote that report was none other than the chief auctioneer Diego had bribed.

A few days later.

Raul and Diego visited the spice auction house.

“Diego, is sugar really that cheap now?”

“Yeah. Just trust me.”

But when they arrived, the sugar auction had already been canceled.

Prices had collapsed so badly that they couldn’t even determine an opening price.

“Diego, doesn’t that mean we can’t buy any sugar?”

“Don’t worry. I already called the sugar importers here.”

After waiting for a short while, the sugar import merchants crowded around Diego.

The skin beneath their eyes was dark, and tears practically filled their eyes.

“Please, sir, save us. We’re about to dry up and die.”

Hardly anyone operated a merchant company using only their own capital.

Most merchants had borrowed money to purchase sugar.

Now that sugar prices had collapsed, every one of them looked miserable.

The repayment deadlines for their high-interest loans were approaching, and the penalties for late payment were brutal.

Every passing day felt like their blood was drying up.

At this rate, they might have to cut flesh from their own bodies to pay the interest.

Diego tried his best to put on a sinister and despicable expression.

“Hehehe. I won’t buy it from you for nothing. I’ll only buy if you sign forward contracts as well.”

The dark circles beneath the merchants’ eyes seemed to become even darker.

“The sugar price in Alexandria hasn’t changed. How can we sell it cheaply to you?”

“Sell the physical sugar you currently own at a loss, and break even on the forward contracts. I’m not a demon. I won’t force you to sign future contracts below cost as well.”

This had been Eric’s order.

He had said there was no reason to earn unnecessary grudges.

After all, plenty of people in this world got stabbed to death while sleeping.

Whatever the reason, the merchants’ faces immediately brightened again after hearing Diego’s offer.

“Sir, then shall we sign the contract right away?”

“Yes. Bring the contracts.”

In addition to the money earned from selling Canada syrup, Diego had also secured a credit loan from a bank.

He had used Chairman Bonmati’s letter of introduction there as well.

Diego bought every bit of dirt-cheap physical sugar he could find, along with futures contracts that had no premium attached.

Then he looked at Raul and raised his thumb.

Now, once sugar prices returned to normal, all that remained was to resell the sugar and make a profit.

Chairman Bonmati was receiving a report from her aide.

“The secretary from Marcel has pulled off something quite impressive.”

“What do you mean? Did he commit some kind of fraud?”

“It wasn’t fraud. But because he released a massive amount of Canada into the market, sugar prices collapsed. Then that secretary bought up all the cheap sugar.”

Chairman Bonmati’s eyes widened.

She had plenty of experience as a merchant herself, so she immediately understood the true nature of Canada.

The moment she heard what Diego had done, she realized that the spice market must have fallen into complete chaos.

“Good grief! The merchants must have suffered massive losses.”

“Not massive ones. The sugar importers apparently suffered some losses on their physical stock. And the spice merchants bought too much Canada, so they’re simply experiencing some temporary liquidity problems.”

“Why? Couldn’t he have bankrupted every last one of them?”

“I sent a servant to ask. Apparently, it was an order from Viscount Eric Marcel. He told them not to bankrupt the merchants.”

Chairman Bonmati burst into laughter after hearing that.

“Hahaha! That’s just like Viscount Eric Marcel! He makes money, but still cares about people.”

In truth, Eric simply didn’t want someone to stab him while he was sleeping.

But whatever the reason, he had once again left a good impression on Chairman Bonmati.

As someone who was fundamentally a merchant herself, she had no reason to dislike Eric’s aggressive business methods either.

“What do you think of him?”

“Viscount Eric Marcel is no ordinary man. He is extremely special. He’s intelligent, has an excellent character, and even possesses deep faith. How could anyone call such a man ordinary?”

Misunderstanding piled upon misunderstanding.

But did it really matter?

Once an impression became firmly planted in someone’s mind, it was difficult to change.

In Lisboa, Eric was now considered a good person.

Meanwhile, sugar prices quickly returned to normal.

There were several reasons, but the biggest was simply that sugar itself was an extremely valuable product.

In addition, the wholesalers who had bought too much Canada didn’t want to suffer losses, so they resold their forward contracts or quickly shipped their physical stock overseas.

Canada was especially popular on the heavily populated Southern Continent, so most of the physical supply was soon consumed.

When Diego heard the news, his motivation soared.

Aside from the amount already tied up in forward contracts, if we stop selling Canada through middlemen and ship it directly to the Southern Continent, we’ll make a fortune!

In any case, it was almost time to return to Marcel.

Diego resold all his sugar contracts and repaid the bank loan.

He converted all the profits into Iberian silver coins.

Since Marcel traded most frequently with Catalonia, Iberian silver coins were commonly used there as well.

Then he loaded chest after chest of silver coins onto the Benedicta.

Captain Adrien welcomed Diego and Raul.

“Good work! Rumors about you two have spread all over the harbor. I heard you made a killing?”

Raul puffed out his chest and proudly raised his shoulders.

“We swept up all the money in Lisboa. Hahaha!”

“Oh! Impressive. As expected of the talented men chosen by our lord.”

Listening from behind them, Diego quietly smiled.

To him, the truly incredible person was Lord Eric Marcel, the man who had designed this entire scheme from the beginning.

And when Diego imagined Eric praising him and granting him a family name as a reward, his chest swelled with emotion.
