Chapter 33

Chapter 33: The Terrible Naming Ceremony

“If the White Spirit Sacred Spears awaken, they will possess a mysterious and powerful ability capable of containing any spiritual power in this world.”

Lady Sunhwa asked,

“Then could they absorb the spiritual power of the Infinite Dark Cavern as well?”

“Hahaha. They would never be capable of absorbing the immense power of the entire Infinite Dark Cavern. However, if the cavern begins expanding into Heaven or Hell, these spears should be able to force its power back toward its original location.”

“Ah... So they function like some kind of guidance device.”

The Jade Emperor suddenly interrupted.

For the ruler of Heaven, he seemed surprisingly bad at reading the room.

“However, awakening these two White Spirit Sacred Spears will require the power of both of you.”

“I understand, Gaseon. Then what must my husband and I do?”

Lady Sunhwa asked.

“But why are there two spears? If they cannot absorb the entire thing anyway, wouldn’t one have been enough?”

The Jade Emperor interrupted again.

“If two can be made, then two are better than one.”

Lady Sunhwa answered before Gaseon could.

“Oho. That makes sense.”

The Jade Emperor stroked his long beard and nodded.

“So... what exactly do my husband and I need to do?”

Lady Sunhwa asked again, trying desperately to move the conversation forward.

“For the two spears to awaken, please infuse them with your soul power for one hundred days. His Majesty possesses the strongest Yang energy in Heaven, while you possess the strongest Yin energy. If the two of you alternate infusing the spears with your soul power, the harmony between Yin and Yang will awaken the lives within them.”

“One hundred days?”

“Yes.”

“I will do it, Gaseon.”

Lady Sunhwa quickly agreed before another unnecessary conversation could begin.

“Ahem. Very well. I shall do so too.”

Apparently, the Jade Emperor wasn’t completely incapable of reading the atmosphere.

But Gaseon, who supposedly understood the principles of the world itself, was already thinking that once this was finished, he wanted to disappear somewhere nobody could find him and recover mentally for a while.

On the one-hundred-and-first day, Gaseon, the Jade Emperor, and Lady Sunhwa gathered once again at the Heavenly Altar.

Standing before the two White Spirit Sacred Spears, Gaseon spread both arms and recited the final mantra.

For the previous hundred days, no matter what happened, the Jade Emperor and Lady Sunhwa had faithfully climbed to the Heavenly Altar and infused the two spears with their soul power.

All that remained was for the weapons to awaken.

“Whew... There is only one final thing left.”

Gaseon wiped the sweat from his forehead and stood up.

“What is it?”

Lady Sunhwa asked.

“First, the spears require their True Names. In other words, you must give them names. A True Name is essential for them to establish themselves as living beings. As you know, a True Name is engraved directly into soul power. Once engraved, it can never be changed. Please choose carefully.”

“Ahem... Then my wife and I shall each name one. What do you think, my dear?”

“That sounds good.”

“Then you should go first.”

Lady Sunhwa approached the Sacred Spear on the right.

A red talisman was attached to it.

“Write the spear’s name onto the talisman with the brush in front of you.”

Lady Sunhwa lifted the brush.

She wrote several characters onto the red talisman.

The talisman immediately burst into flame.

Its smoke seeped into the spear.

“Beautiful white spear, from this moment onward, your True Name shall be Baekhee, the White Princess.”

As Lady Sunhwa proclaimed the name, the white spear seemed to tremble with joy.

It dissolved into white light.

The scattered light gathered once more, taking the form of a young girl.

She had snow-white hair, snow-white eyebrows, and snow-white skin.

The girl wore a white feathered robe.

She knelt before Lady Sunhwa.

“This humble girl, Baekhee, greets Lady Sunhwa.”

She appeared calm and quiet.

“Then it is my turn?”

Before Gaseon could even say anything, the Jade Emperor stepped forward and grabbed the brush.

He wrote onto the talisman attached to the other spear.

The red talisman burned.

Smoke seeped inside the weapon.

The Jade Emperor proudly declared,

“Beautiful white spear! You are truly, truly beautiful. Therefore, your True Name shall be Mija!”

“What did you say?”

“What?!”

Gaseon and Lady Sunhwa were horrified.

They had not been fast enough to stop him.

Just like Baekhee, the white spear trembled.

The Jade Emperor thought it was shaking with happiness.

Lady Sunhwa suspected that it might actually be trembling from embarrassment.

The spear dissolved into white light and then reformed as another young girl.

She had white hair, white eyebrows, and white skin, so similar to Baekhee that they could have been twins.

“Waaah... This humble girl, Mija, greets you... sniff....”

Unlike Baekhee, she seemed bright and energetic.

But perhaps because of the name the Jade Emperor had just given her, Mija was already crying.

“Hahaha! You must be so happy that you’re crying.”

Completely unaware of Mija’s feelings, the Jade Emperor smiled proudly.

Lady Sunhwa looked at him and shook her head.

Gaseon blamed himself for failing to stop the Jade Emperor despite having feared something exactly like this might happen.

“...Lastly, the one who bestowed the True Name upon each White Spirit Sacred Spear must also name that spear’s special ability. Only then will the Sacred Spear be able to recognize and activate the power. You two understand what that power is, correct?”

Gaseon spoke gently, almost like an elementary school teacher.

“Yes, Palhwang True Immortal.”

The two girls answered together.

“Do you mean the power that allows them to contain any spiritual power in heaven or earth?”

Lady Sunhwa asked.

“Yes, my lady. They can accept even the power of a god.”

“I see....”

“Then shall I go first?”

The Jade Emperor eagerly raised his hand.

“No! No, absolutely not! My lady should go first again!”

Gaseon hurriedly stopped him.

He deliberately made Lady Sunhwa go first so the Jade Emperor could watch and learn.

“What should I do?”

Lady Sunhwa asked.

“For the naming of an ability, place your hand on the child’s head and declare, ‘The name of your ability shall be...’”

Lady Sunhwa nodded.

She placed a hand on Baekhee’s head.

“Baekhee! From this day onward, the name of your ability shall be Bongshin, Divine Sealing!”

“I understand. I will remember it.”

White light flowed from Baekhee’s body before sinking back inside her.

“Then this time, I shall....”

The Jade Emperor placed his hand on Mija’s head.

“Mija! From this moment onward, the name of your ability shall be Bingshin, Divine Possession!”

“What?!”

Mija’s expression immediately crumpled.

“What did you say?!”

“What?!”

Gaseon and Lady Sunhwa reacted with the same shock.

The Jade Emperor ignored all three of them.

“Bingshin means allowing a god to possess you. What name could possibly be more appropriate? Hahaha!”

He alone looked thoroughly satisfied.

“O-Okay... I’ll remember it... WAAAAAH!”

Unable to endure the embarrassment, little Mija finally burst into tears.

“Hahaha... Hey, why are you crying on such a happy day?”

Even the Jade Emperor seemed flustered now.

He lifted Mija into his arms and tried to soothe her.

Lady Sunhwa tightly held Baekhee’s hand and watched the Jade Emperor and Mija with a warm smile.

The naming ceremony had been a complete disaster.

Still, to the childless Jade Emperor and Lady Sunhwa, Baekhee and Mija already felt like their own daughters.

Several months passed.

Baekhee and Mija lived under the care of the Heavenly Palace.

Every god, Immortal, and heavenly maiden in the palace loved the two girls.

They spent each day happily.

Until one day.

Three evil spirits who had been serving their punishment in the deepest abyss of Hell suddenly revolted.

They were the first evil spirits in existence.

The Three Evils of the Underworld.

Originally, however, they had been Immortals.

They possessed such extraordinary talent and natural spiritual power that they should have ascended into Heaven as great Immortals.

Yet for reasons unknown, they committed horrific crimes.

Because of those crimes, they became the first truly evil men to appear in the living world.

Enraged by what they had done, the Jade Emperor sent Heaven’s Four Great Generals and five thousand Heavenly Soldiers down into the living world.

Four thousand of those five thousand soldiers were slaughtered.

Not one of Heaven’s Four Great Generals escaped without serious wounds.

In the end, however, the three villains were killed by the surviving Heavenly Soldiers and Four Great Generals.

After death, their souls fell into the abyss of Hell.

There, they became the world’s first evil spirits.

For more than two thousand years afterward, they endured punishment in Hell.

Despite eventually losing, the fact that they had slaughtered thousands of Heavenly Soldiers and nearly killed Heaven’s Four Great Generals made everyone fear them.

Thus, they became known as the Three Evils of the Underworld.

And now, those three monsters had escaped from Hell.

Their soul powers were also under strict control inside the Great Hall of Hell, so their escape should have been almost impossible.

Someone must have released them.

And only someone capable of freely entering the Great Hall of Hell could have done such a thing.

After escaping, the Three Evils began destroying Hell and attacking the Underworld.

Their former Immortal power transformed into demonic power.

They became incomparably stronger than they had been before.

Taking advantage of the chaos, millions of imprisoned evil spirits escaped and became followers of the Three Evils.

Heaven and Hell joined forces and fought them.

But they could not defeat the Three Evils, whose Immortal powers had transformed into the powers of evil spirits.

Eventually, three of Heaven’s Four Great Generals were killed by them.

After hearing the news, the Jade Emperor of Heaven and King Yeomra of Hell summoned a single Underworld Chasa to the Heavenly Palace.

A young man stood proudly in the great hall of the Heavenly Palace.

His posture did not waver by even an inch.

His smooth, long black hair reached his waist.

His calm eyes carried an inexplicable loneliness.

His lips were firmly closed, as though declaring that he could endure any hardship or suffering.

He possessed the quiet yet immense presence of a great mountain.

The black uniform he wore identified him as an Underworld Chasa.

“You have endured much to come here.”

The Jade Emperor spoke from his throne.

King Yeomra sat on a dragon throne to his right.

Lady Sunhwa sat on a phoenix throne to his left.

Throughout the enormous hall, officials serving the Jade Emperor stood in lines on both sides.

“It wasn’t particularly difficult.”

The young man’s voice was calm yet powerful.

“How does it feel to possess a human body?”

The Jade Emperor asked.

“It still... feels unfamiliar. Sometimes I become confused and wonder whether this body truly belongs to me.”

The young man looked down at his hands.

“Where is Hwayeong now?”

King Yeomra asked.

“Hwayeong is waiting for my return at King Yeomra’s Palace in Hell.”

The young man turned toward Yeomra.

“You understand why Hwayeong turned you into a human, correct?”

“I heard the reason directly from Hwayeong, so I understand.”

“Good.”

The Jade Emperor leaned forward.

“Do you have a name?”
