Chapter 187

The Game Difficulty

Is Insane

The basement where Glenn and the god Morse were standing wasn’t very large.

It was said this was the only place without noise to disturb concentration.

“The musty smell is minimal, and there’s no outside sound… very suitable.”

Morse looked around the empty basement and nodded in satisfaction.

The smile he gave Glenn looked sly, and Glenn swallowed nervously.

The black-and-white ring experiment he proposed wasn’t in the knowledge of the Holy Power Manual, so Glenn felt slightly uneasy.

‘And the fact that sound doesn’t escape…’

He even wondered if Morse might try to absorb him or something.

But putting that aside, the experiment Morse proposed was worth trying.

The Black-and-White Ring Experiment.

An experiment that would allow Glenn, whose holy and demonic rings inside his body were unbalanced, to use Holy-Demonic power through a small trick.

‘Using the gray ring…’

"If you use the interesting ability you used, it shouldn’t be impossible."

Morse said he had observed Glenn fighting his guardian, the Tuned Life Force.

He said he had gotten inspiration from seeing the gray ring Glenn used then.

“As I said before, combining two powers is easiest when neither is stronger and they are in balance.”

In other words, as long as the balance of Holy Power and Demonic Power is roughly one-to-one, any method can work.

“And the ability you used, the gray ring, is what makes that balance as close as possible.”

Morse approached Glenn with arms theatrically extended as if performing on stage.

The god’s eye, drawn with concentric golden rings, emitted a sharp glare.

“It’s truly fascinating. A ring made from collected Holy Power can become a Holy Ring or turn into a Demonic Ring.”

“Then I thought. If I use that ability, maybe I can rearrange the rings themselves.”

○○○○○●●●

Currently, the eight rings linked to Glenn’s heart formed a chain like this.

So, rearranging the rings meant alternating the Holy and Demonic rings.

○○○○○●●●

Using the gray ring, rearranging them into a shape like this:

○●○●○●○○

So that the Holy and Demonic rings alternate as much as possible.

“Of course, this is only the first step to reduce the burden when you combine the two powers.”

The second step uses the fact that rings temporarily turn gray when using the gray ring.

Leave the leftover rings that aren’t paired with a Demonic Ring in an inactive state.

○●○●○● / ●●

Like this.

“That way, even without an extreme will, you can use the Holy-Demonic power of six rings.”

That was Morse’s proposal.

Of course, Glenn wondered if sacrificing two intact rings for combat was really worth the Holy-Demonic power.

But considering the Holy-Demonic power he had experienced so far, it could increase his combat strength.

‘And soon I can even link the fourth Demonic Ring.’

Since rearranging the rings doesn’t reduce his power, there was no reason not to try.

Of course, it wasn’t easy.

He needed the skill to manipulate each ring precisely rather than all at once, requiring significant mental strength.

‘It depends on how well I control Holy Power and Demonic Power.’

Even if it was an unknown force, it would still make Glenn stronger than any force in the world.

Glenn focused, his beautiful ash-gray eyes serious, and strengthened his will.

“Let’s do this.”

“I will help tune it from beside you, so don’t worry too much.”

Morse slowly approached and placed his hand over Glenn’s heart.

At that signal, Glenn took a deep breath and used the gray ring.

Vvvvvvvv-

The eight Holy and Demonic rings resonated and turned gray.

Glenn focused on the first ring, pouring Holy Power into it, then breathed Demonic Power into the second ring…

“…!”

A wave of agony hit him.

It was more extreme than mere resistance from Holy or Demonic Power.

“Ugh!”

A groan escaped despite his attempt to hold it in.

Blood appeared at his lips, streaming from somewhere unknown in his throat.

“This pain is natural. Don’t think changing one ring into another would be easy.”

Without the gray ring, it would have been impossible.

Whether to create ultimate Holy-Demonic power or not, Morse was serious about Glenn’s achievement.

“I will adjust the resistance between Holy and Demonic Power, so focus.”

But even with Morse’s serious support, fresh blood kept appearing at Glenn’s lips.

“…This won’t do. Stop.”

It was natural in a way.

Grounded beings were clumsy at controlling power freely because they focused on linking rings.

Still, Glenn being an abnormal entity, Morse had expected more…

“First, you need to handle Holy and Demonic Power freely…”

As Morse tried to withdraw his hand from Glenn’s heart area with a cool gaze,

Glenn grabbed his wrist with his left hand and pressed it against his own heart.

“….”

Eyes met.

“Continue… ugh…”

Words barely came out.

But seeing the sharp light in Glenn’s ash-gray eyes, Morse’s mouth twisted into a strange smile.

“Haha. You are greater than any earthly being I have ever seen.”

“What are you thinking?”

“Hmm?”

Romina, turning her head from manipulating Demonic Power particles in her hand, asked.

“Want to see something interesting?”

“Something interesting…?”

“Look.”

Romina stretched out her hand.

Flash-

At the tips of her five elegant white fingers, Demonic Power particles formed.

They each had different sizes and shapes.

“Impressive control.”

“I can do more.”

The Demonic Power particles changed shape.

“This is a sheep.”

“This is a tree.”

“Human.”

“A high-rank demon with horns and wings.”

Ridenhol watched the freely changing particles in awe.

“Amazing. I didn’t think any demon could control Demonic Power like this.”

“I’ve been able to for a while.”

Controlling Demonic Power was easy.

Even as a child, her father, Diaro, and the high demons following him praised her.

But training daily with Glenn and receiving Demonic Power from him accelerated her growth drastically.

It wasn’t just talent; traveling with Glenn and surviving trials together sped her growth.

“Soon, I’ll be able to make detailed faces.”

“To make detailed faces… Rominia, how many stars do you have now?”

Only then did Ridenhol realize, and Romina smiled slightly.

“7 stars. Once I can sculpt faces with Demonic Power, I think I can link the next ring.”

She was only twenty.

A human Paladin at this age would barely link two or three rings, yet Romina was approaching the eighth rank.

“When did you link the seventh Demonic Ring?”

“Less than a month ago.”

“Just before meeting me.”

Ridenhol muttered in admiration.

“I met Glenn about a month and a half ago. I was 5 stars then.”

In just a month and a half, she went beyond 6 and 7 stars, approaching 8.

No one had ever seen such rapid growth.

“Brother’s influence is incredible… Then, Rominia, what will you do once you grow stronger?”

“Revenge.”

The answer came immediately.

“I’ll take revenge on the man who killed my father and tried to kill me.”

“And then?”

“I’ve never thought beyond that.”

Romina smiled lightly.

“But now, I want to do something.”

Seeing that shy smile, Ridenhol quietly nodded.

“I think I understand even if you don’t say…”

Rumble-rumble-rumble-

A sudden roar shook the entire space.

“What the?!”

Ridenhol panicked, and Romina stomped without hesitation.

“R-Rominia?!”

“I’ll go see Glenn!”

“Ah!”

Ridenhol followed, recalling possible dangers.

They sprinted down the corridor.

Passing quickly, Romina retraced the sounds and what Glenn had said, sprinting toward the basement.

She bit her lip.

‘I shouldn’t leave him alone with that lecherous god!’

In less than ten seconds, they kicked open the firmly closed basement door.

“Glenn!”

“Brother!”

Romina shouted sharply.

Ridenhol followed, generating Holy Power to illuminate the darkness.

And there,

“Ah.”

Glenn stood casually.

“You’re here… it was noisy, wasn’t it?”

His expression was casual, almost dumbfounded.

Romina’s expression twisted as she tried to understand the situation.

The god Morse she most feared was far from Glenn.

“Fuss over such a small thing.”

He looked at them with eyes annoyed at their urgency.

Just as she tried to feel relief, Romina sensed something wrong.

The strong energy she had felt running down the corridor—the strange, unknown power—was still lingering in the basement.

‘What the…!’

Her gaze shifted from Morse to Glenn, and then she noticed the basement wall behind him was gone.

“What… what is that…?”

It was as if a massive object had distorted space and passed through.

Behind the shattered wall stretched an endless, dark void.

“What is it?”

Glenn looked at the panicked Romina and Ridenhol, raising his lips.

“My new power.”

After that day, Demon Lord Rupellos van Zausreze fell into ennui.

The one he had long sought.

The one called the Undertaker appeared, and following Penelope’s report that he headed to the human territory of Elchisco, he secretly went there.

But the Undertaker was not there, and after over a month of fruitless effort, Rupellos quietly returned to the Demon Castle.

He didn’t appear at legion meetings for a while, secluded in his room.

-“Demon Lord. A message from the 2nd Legion Commander. In the first battle…”
-“Demon Lord. The 3rd Legion Commander urgently requests to meet you.”

Advisors came and went, but he ignored even that.

Rupellos had little interest in this war.

‘If we win and gain human land, fine. If not, whatever.’

That was all the concern he had.

Having lived long, and the devout 2nd Legion Commander of Nox strongly requested, he had roughly agreed.

He only wanted to find the Undertaker, who had once cast him into hell.

Although he thought perhaps he could destroy the Papal State and search Elchisco,

‘He wouldn’t stay in one place for long.’

The unknown Undertaker had wandered freely across the world.

Chasing and losing him for over twenty years had taught him that.

The Undertaker had probably moved to another place, not human land.

Penelope’s testimony of his path to Elchisco might have been the last chance.

But Rupellos again failed to meet his enemy.

Being forced to fight a war he didn’t care for, it was natural to fall into ennui.

“F*** this war.”

Being past his hot-blooded youth, tormenting the weak to relieve anger had become tiresome.

Knock-knock-

“Demon Lord.”

An advisor knocked.

Expecting little interest, Rupellos responded indifferently.

“…What?”

“The 8th Legion Commander requests your presence.”

“…Penelope?”

He slowly rose from the bed.

“For what purpose?”

“I’m not sure, but she said it was personal.”

The word “personal” sounded pleasing.

If Penelope herself wanted to speak personally, it was worth expecting.

“Tell her she may enter soon.”

Shedding long-standing ennui,

Rupellos smiled, anticipating the highly personal information Penelope would bring.
