Chapter 198

198

Tap tap—

A small boy ran through the city, dyed red on all sides.

“H-huh… Ack! Uuuh…!”

He ran so hard he could taste blood in his throat, yet he could not stop his legs.

The sacrifice of his parents to save him was meaningless, because the pursuer chased him with snake-like red eyes, glaring wildly.

Still, running desperately had created some distance, so the boy tried to stop for a moment to catch his breath.

“Krahahaha!”

However, a cruel demon soldier appeared from the corner and leapt at the boy.

“Uaaah!!”
“Got you, little one! Krrrhh… You ran well like a little rat. But now, let's stop this game of tag.”
 “D-don’t… come…!”

The demon cast its shadow over the fallen boy and stepped closer, one step at a time.

Swish—

With a clean slicing sound, the rough voice of the demon stopped.

The boy cautiously opened his eyes, seeing that the danger had passed.

“Are you alright?”

In front of him now stood a man in a white robe, face and body fully covered, exuding an eerie presence.

“…!”
“It’s alright. Don’t be scared. I am someone from the Order.”

The man raised holy power in his hands to prove himself to the boy.

Feeling the warm light for a moment, the boy finally shed tears of relief.

“The demons… are…?”
 “…It’s better you don’t see.”

Behind the priest, a few people in armor were quietly handling something—it seemed they were dead.

“Are you hurt anywhere?”
 “…No.”
 “Where is your family?”
 “They… went back…”
 “…I see.”

The priest embraced the boy tightly.

“I’m sorry I came late.”
 “…Sniff… thank… you…”

After comforting the boy briefly, the priest slowly stood.

“This place is dangerous. Move along. Survivors are gathering not far from here.”
 “Priest… you’re not coming with me…?”
 “I wish I could.”

The priest turned his head, bitterness in his eyes.

“Saving even one person like you is the priority.”
 “…I-I’ll go alone…”
“You’re mature. There shouldn’t be more demons there, so it will be fine. Farewell.”

Patting the boy’s head, the priest, Ridenhall, left quickly.

Clack clack—

Following him were six skeleton knights, hiding their true forms under heavy armor.

Over roughly twenty minutes, Ridenhall moved through the Delphius estate, saving nearly a hundred people.

‘Fortunately, civilian casualties are low.’

Most of the corpses in the streets were soldiers and knights who had resisted. Their deaths were not light, but at least the innocent who had no chance to defend themselves were not massacred in large numbers.

The reasons were several:

The defensive troops of Delphius had been destroyed not long ago.

And forces that should have been looting homes were already gone.

‘Thanks to my brother drawing the demons’ attention properly.’

Glenn had broken through the central avenue from the checkpoint to the Delphius mansion at terrifying speed.

Because Glenn wielded a spear, he could save the residents in a way only a spear could.

‘He’s a thoughtful person.’

Although Glenn claimed he only aimed to eliminate the enemy commander and stop meaningless slaughter, Ridenhall could sense the depth of his intentions.

  • I will slightly revise the plan.

  • From now on, you will go around this city and save anyone alive.

Watching Glenn Warzworth standing proudly at the entrance of Delphius Mansion, Ridenhall smiled faintly.

Kugugugu—

The sound of battle between the enemy division commander and Glenn came from the direction of the mansion.

‘This cannot be.’

Kaien’s face twisted.

‘This cannot be. Cannot be! Impossible!!’

Watching the scene unfold in real time, Kaien’s thoughts accelerated again and again.

In the world, multiple gods exist.

The human worship of light and sun, Minis, and the demons’ worship of darkness and moon, Nox. Other races also worship different gods.

Each god has its own power and grants it to their devoted followers.

Occasionally, someone may receive favor from two gods, but only if their wills align. Normally, full devotion to one god grants one the god’s power.

Yet…

“Who the hell are you!”

Kaien shouted at the silver-haired man rushing toward him. The man had been surrounded by holy power when arriving here, massive in density.

But now, the man was surrounded by magic, superior to Kaien’s.

Fshhhhh—
“!”

The sword wreathed in magic aimed for Kaien’s vital spot, and Kaien raised his weapon to block.

Kaahhng—!

He barely matched the speed and blocked, but his body was bounced backward.

“Krahk!”

Kaien’s body smashed into the wall behind him. The cost of blocking the man’s attack was enormous.

He brushed off debris and stood, but his body was weak.

“Cough! Cough…”

His legs shook continuously, and over half of his 8-star magical energy was depleted.

“Impossible… krrhh…”

How could holy power and magic coexist in a single body? Kaien, with his lifelong knowledge, could not understand the phenomenon surrounding the man.

“Enduring well, aren’t you.”

The man had reached Kaien, wearing an arrogant smile. Kaien bit his lip, feeling the pride of a high-ranking demon collapse.

“Still… you don’t seem to need a skill… are you 8-star?”
 “Who are you… really?”
 “That’s not important, is it?”

The human was right. Kaien did not need to know his identity.

What mattered was that this man possessed 9-star power and wanted to kill him.

Confused, Kaien’s normally sharp mind was thrown into chaos. His confidence and rationality, which fueled his strength, were useless.

“Where… from—!”
 “Hmm.”

The man’s voice cut through Kaien’s chaotic thoughts.

“Looks like you need to regain your senses first.”

“Wha—?!”

The man’s foot struck Kaien’s face.

“Kraaaahk!”

Kaien flew through the air, smashing walls and landing beyond the floor.

“Krrhh… kher… ugh…”

A light kick could have killed him if done weakly.

“I know this land pretty well.”

The man already stood in front of Kaien, despite the long distance he must have traveled.

“Helia’s starting estate… and the scenery is really pretty, so I’ve been healing while here.”
“The lord’s family is nice, loyal under Raygle. Even if you play as demons, they’re rarely bothered. This place.”

Kaien did not understand, but he felt it.

“I thought I’d just push through and take it. Even as enemies, demons are humane. After winning, keeping residents as slaves is useful. But…”

The man before him exuded intense hatred, almost like a grudge.

“I didn’t expect someone crazy enough to start a massacre.”

Kaien’s pupils shook as he met the cold light in the man’s gray eyes. The only thought in his mind was survival.

“W-wait! I-I-I’ll tell you secrets! L-let’s talk first, humanely!”

Kaien forced a trembling smile, unaware how pathetic he appeared.

“Secrets? Good. We lacked intel on your legion anyway.”

He felt relief in the man’s simple reply, unaware it only increased disgust.

“Kr… krhh… hahaha! Fine. First, the commander… no, first I’ll tell you what you want…”

Smash—!

The man’s kick struck Kaien’s face again.

“Kherghh!”

Military secrets about the First Legion.

Not a bad trade.

Knocking down one of the top five division commanders deserved reward.

He thought so, until realizing he had reached Delphius mansion’s courtyard while beating Kaien.

“….”

Kaien lay on the floor, now soaked in blood. The white stones were stained red.

Corpses of servants and guards overflowed into the fountain.

Even though it was a game, the once beautiful courtyard of Delphius estate was now covered in blood.

‘Because of this bastard.’

Kaien Roksmir, a high-ranking demon absent from the original, had trampled on his precious memories.

Not the greatest memories, but that didn’t excuse him. The man before Glenn deserved to be crushed, giving him ample reason.

Glenn approached Kaien and quietly said,

“Secrets, I’ll hear from someone else.”

Kaien’s pupils widened.

At the same time, Glenn’s fist struck Kaien’s face.

Only three minutes remained until the gray ring’s duration ended. Short, but Kaien would feel this time longer than ever.

Clack clack—

“Feeling sleepy.”

Romina strolled leisurely through the desolate Delphius mansion.

The white walls were smeared with blood, but sunlight through the broken ceiling made it look less grim.

If viewed under the dark red sky during battle, it would have been horrifying, but now it felt like wandering ruins.

“Where could he be…”

Shielding her eyes, Romina looked around and headed deeper into the mansion.

Here and there were signs of battle, with some human corpses, but she passed lightly.

Children servants and guards who couldn’t even close their eyes haunted her gaze, but comforting them was not her task.

“….”

She looked at them with slight pity but felt no strong negative emotions—the battle was over.

After about ten minutes, exploring the wide mansion, Romina found Glenn.

“…You’re here.”

Glenn was calm. Using 9-star power for the first time today, he looked tired but relieved.

Romina smiled faintly and approached.

“You really stirred things up, didn’t you?”
 “I didn’t mean to.”
“Not really. The whole mansion bears your marks. And you know about magic, right?”

Glenn just shrugged.

“So… the division commander?”
 “Over there.”

Glenn lazily pointed to a part of the courtyard. A demon lay crushed beyond recognition.

Romina raised her eyebrows.

“Hm. You could have killed him quickly. How long did you keep him alive?”
“Hmm? Probably twenty minutes just to annoy him, beating him to death.”
“You never think of your own body. Still… surprising. You used that much strength? Must’ve really hated him, huh?”
“Sometimes in life, there’s someone who just wastes oxygen. So I try my best until I can.”

Romina chuckled.

“Trying your best… Must be tiring if someone gets on your bad side.”
 “Tiring? Nah. They just die.”
 “Right. So… what now?”

Romina glanced over the half-ruined Delphius estate.

“Would’ve been better if we arrived a day earlier… right?”
“If we regretted every little thing, it would never end.”

Glenn got up and slowly walked toward the exit.

“What’s done can’t be helped. And if I’m not the cause, even less reason to regret. Better to move on to the next task.”

Even now, Raygle’s estate and his retainers’ lands were likely being pushed back.

Better to protect what remains than regret spilled water. That reduces future regrets.

“True enough.”

Watching Glenn leave the courtyard, Romina nodded.

Step step—
Clack clack—

Leaving sounds in the silence, Glenn and Romina walked slowly out of the half-collapsed Delphius mansion.
