Chapter 23

The Game Difficulty
Is Crazy

Chapter

The day after Glen visited.

Priest Jonas was running frantically through the corridors of the monastery.

His face was clearly full of panic.

“P-P-Priest Jonas? Your knees aren’t even good—where are you running so fast?!”

But Jonas did not even acknowledge the nun.

The old priest’s dash, which had started early in the morning, only stopped when he reached the abbot’s office.

Bang—!

“B-Bishop Romano!”

Romano, the abbot, who had been reading the scriptures with a magnifying glass, lifted his head.

“Brother Jonas. What is the matter so early in the morning? And what is with all that sweat?”

“Huff… huff… haa… I-I ran… from the underground crypt…”

“The underground crypt? At your age, something serious must have happened for you to run all the way here from there.”

Romano tilted his head.

Jonas finally caught his breath.

“Brother Jonas. What about the underground crypt? Did something happen to the wraith we had sealed there?”

Concern deepened on Romano’s face.

He wondered if the wraith imprisoned in the underground crypt had gone on a rampage.

However, the words that came out of Jonas’s mouth were utterly absurd.

“N-No, that’s not it!”

“Then what is the problem—”

“The wraith has disappeared!”

Abbot Romano also lowered his magnifying glass with a shocked expression.

“…What? What did you just say?”

“Just as you heard. Early this morning, while I was cleaning the prayer rooms, I felt something strange coming from the direction of the underground crypt. So I went to check, and…”

“You’re saying the wraith we had sealed there has vanished?”

“Yes.”

Romano looked at Jonas with a disbelieving gaze.

For a moment, he even wondered if the old priest was playing a prank, but Jonas was not that kind of person.

“How could this have happened?”

“Could it be that it failed to withstand the holy power filling the monastery and naturally dissipated?”

Romano shook his head.

“I have never heard of a wraith naturally disappearing.”

“Then are you saying someone personally destroyed the wraith in the underground crypt?”

“That would be the most reasonable conclusion.”

Even so, Romano was not confident.

Only high-ranking priests could destroy a wraith.

‘There is no priest with that level of holy power in the Wordsworth territory.’

Even he himself, the highest-ranking priest in the territory, was not even a 6-star priest.

If there had been a 7-star priest to begin with, the wraith would have been destroyed immediately instead of being sealed.

“Ah, Bishop Romano. Come to think of it, there was something unusual.”

“Something unusual?”

“Yes. There were scratch marks all over the floor and walls of the underground chamber.”

“Scratch… marks?”

Romano’s eyes widened.

“Then that means there were traces of a fight, Brother Jonas?”

“It… seems so.”

Battle marks left where the wraith disappeared.

‘In other words, someone fought the wraith. Could it be…?’

Among the priests of the Papal State, there was only one way to directly battle a wraith.

‘Was an exorcism performed?’

Bishop Romano frowned.

“So, judging from the circumstances, someone performed an exorcism on the wraith in the underground crypt last night, and in the end succeeded in eliminating it?”

Perhaps finding it ridiculous himself, Romano let out a hollow laugh.

An exorcism was a truly reckless method that risked the life of the priest performing it.

From drawing ritual patterns on the floor, to reciting passages from the scriptures, to maintaining ironclad mental focus while chanting incantations—

A single mistake could lead to a fatal accident. It was a ritual so difficult that even high-ranking priests struggled to succeed.

Not only that.

If one simply waited, a high-ranking priest dispatched from the capital would eventually come and eliminate the wraith anyway, so why would anyone go through such needless hardship?

‘Who in their right mind would do something like that?’

Yet someone had gone down into the underground crypt last night and done that insane thing.

And somehow, they had succeeded.

For now, that was the most plausible hypothesis.

“Could it have been done by the trainee priests?”

“That’s impossible.”

Romano shook his head.

Exorcism was a ritual abandoned long ago for the safety of priests.

Aside from himself and the old priest Jonas, no one in this monastery would even know the method.

Jonas let out a low groan.

“Hmmm… Then that means…”

“Yes. It must have been the work of one of the visitors from outside the monastery.”

“But who would know the details of the exorcism ritual…”

“That is something we must find out now.”

Romano closed the scriptures.

“Priest Jonas. Could you bring me the monastery’s visitor log?”

“Yes? Ah, understood.”

Jonas made the sign of the cross and immediately left the abbot’s office.

Left alone, Romano muttered to himself.

“Just whose doing could this be?”

A shadow fell over Romano’s face.

Of course, from the abbot’s perspective, there was nothing to lose—someone had taken care of a troublesome wraith that was not easily dealt with.

However, in order to report properly to the high-ranking priest who would soon be dispatched from the capital, it was necessary to uncover the truth of the incident.

‘Someone who knows about exorcism and successfully carried it out would not be an ordinary priest.’

Imagining the image of such a venerable priest, Romano made the sign of the cross.

At the same time.

Glen skipped the morning training and sat in the middle of his room, regulating his breathing.

Dark circles hung heavily under his eyes.

Since he had returned late at dawn after defeating the wraith, both sleep and stamina were lacking—an entirely natural state.

Even so, he did not feel particularly exhausted.

‘I’m about to weave the second holy ring I’ve been waiting for. Who has time to be tired?’

Of course, despite saying that, Glen fully intended to throw himself onto the bed the moment the work of weaving the second holy ring was finished.

“Inhale… exhale.”

He slowly released the breath he had taken in.

Then he gently closed his eyes.

Soon, the noises from the room, the hallway beyond the door, and outside the window faded away, and silence settled in.

Glen focused his mind.

The holy power filling the left side of his heart began to shine and gather into a single point.

The second holy ring was beginning to form.

There was no great pain.

In calm serenity, Glen concentrated and condensed the holy power into one point.

At times his focus wavered and a headache came over him, but it was bearable.

Compared to the excruciating pain he had felt when separating holy power and demonic energy in the past, this was nothing.

‘Back when I formed the first holy ring, it was quite painful.’

There was a clear reason why the second holy ring was being formed so smoothly.

It was because of his holy power stat.

According to the original game, the requirement to weave the second holy ring was a holy power stat of at least 24.

Glen’s holy power, however, was 30—six points higher than the requirement.

In other words, even after forming the second holy ring, he still had surplus holy power remaining in his heart.

‘With that much leeway, refining holy power into a ring becomes much easier.’

The corner of Glen’s lips lifted slightly.

Meanwhile, the holy power gathering on the left side of his heart had already taken the shape of a complete ring.

The formed ring slowly overlapped with the first holy ring.

Uuuuuuung—

Soon, they became a single chain.

At the same time, a notification sound rang out.

《The second Holy Ring has been created.》

Glen slowly opened his eyes and clenched his fist tightly.

“Nice.”

About forty days after entering Glen’s body.

After overcoming countless difficulties, the Holy Ring had finally reached the realm of 2 stars.

Feeling the two holy rings woven on the left side of his heart, Glen smiled in satisfaction.

“It feels much more reassuring.”

As was obvious, the higher one’s holy power and the more holy rings one weaves, the stronger and more diverse the powers one can wield.

With the first holy ring, one could spread holy power throughout the body to enhance physical abilities.

This was the foundation of all holy knights, and as holy power and rank increased, the body could be strengthened even further.

‘And the second ring is…’

Right on cue, a system message appeared in Glen’s vision along with a notification sound.

《A skill has been created.》

《You have learned the skill “Weapon Enhancement · Holy”.》

The second holy ring allowed holy power to be imbued into weapons to enhance them.

A sword if it was a sword, a hammer if it was a hammer.

Even if one picked up a simple branch, using the weapon enhancement skill would grant it power comparable to a dagger.

On top of that, it came with a small bonus effect that dealt additional damage to demons and undead monsters.

In short, weapon enhancement was a fundamental buff skill for holy knights.

‘Of course, compared to unique latent abilities like Favor of Blades or Ringless Knight, it’s about two percent lacking.’

But isn’t it said that the more, the better?

At a time when even the slightest growth was precious, gaining even one more skill was a good thing.

Nodding to his own thoughts, Glen stood up.

“Ugh, I’m exhausted.”

Only after weaving the second holy ring did the fatigue he had been holding back come rushing in.

As soon as he lay down on the soft bed, his eyelids closed on their own.

Considering the approaching demon race assault and the lunatic elements that could appear at any time, even sleeping felt like a waste.

But wasn’t it precisely because he had sacrificed sleep to go to the monastery?

He had achieved quite a lot of growth in a single night, so a few hours of sleep could be forgiven.

‘Just a quick nap.’

Comforting himself that way, Glen slowly closed his eyes.

That was when it happened.

Bang—

“Glen! Are you okay?!”

The door burst open, and Tris rushed in with an anxious expression.

‘Ah, please…’

Glen buried his face in the pillow and screamed silently.

On the balcony of his room.

Glen stared down at his teacup with hollow eyes, eyes soaked in fatigue and emptiness.

“I’m sorry…”

Tris forced a small, awkward smile as she personally refilled Glen’s teacup.

In short, since Glen had skipped morning training and never came out of his room, she had rushed over in fear that he might have fallen ill.

“I was worried all morning. But if it’s just lack of sleep, that’s a relief.”

Tris patted her chest.

It was understandable.

The world of Gray Eden was a fantasy world clearly based on medieval Europe.

Compared to the 21st century where the Holy Ring had lived, medical technology was far inferior, and even a minor cold could easily lead to death.

Glen let out a small chuckle.

In truth, most minor illnesses could be treated by a monastery priest performing a healing miracle.

So, the current situation could be summed up as Tris simply panicking out of concern.

“But what were you doing all night that you couldn’t sleep? Were you worried about something?”

“No, nothing like that. I just couldn’t sleep because I achieved a small accomplishment.”

“A small… accomplishment?”

Tris tilted her head.

Then she began to look closely at Glen, staring at him with half-lidded eyes for a few seconds.

“…Huh?”

Tris’s eyes widened.

Glen nodded as if to say, “Yes, yes. What you’re thinking is correct.”

“Wow… is it real?”

“It’s real.”

“My goodness. Seriously, how far is this kid planning to shock people?”

Tris’s surprised expression softened, and soon a bright smile spread across her face.

“Congratulations, Glen! Has it even been a week since you formed the first ring? And you already have the second?”

“It’s all thanks to God’s grace.”

“Even so, it’s truly amazing.”

Glen smiled faintly as well.

Even though he was tired, sitting here and receiving sincere congratulations did not feel bad at all.

“Then we can raise the intensity of our sparring a bit now.”

“Of course. And if possible, I’d like you to include holy power too, to make it closer to real combat.”

“Okay. Got it. But really, the more I see it, the more incredible it is. To think ‘God’s touch’ would be this strong. At this rate, will you weave the third ring before next year?”

Tris looked at Glen with eyes full of wonder.

“I hope so.”

“It will happen.”

The siblings exchanged smiles.

Of course, if everything went according to plan, he could obtain the third ring within this week.

He found himself secretly looking forward to how Tris would react then.

“Oh, right. Glen, did you hear?”

“Hear what?”

“Father is going to the capital for about a month.”

“…What?”

At the completely unexpected topic, Glen’s gaze turned serious.

“What did you say?”
