Chapter 5

The Game Difficulty

Went Crazy

Chapter 2

The small training ground behind the mansion.

Glen was sitting cross-legged under a large maple tree with his eyes closed.

Ten days had passed.

His rough skin had regained its shine, and color had returned to his once pale face. His body, which had been thin like paper, had filled out slightly, becoming more balanced.

It was hard to believe all of this had happened in just ten days, but that only showed how dramatic the effects of the Growth Potion were.

“……”

Even with such dramatic changes, Glen was frowning and letting out a low groan.

The problem he had noticed ten days ago still had not been solved.

A brake had been applied to his smooth growth.

He could not use holy power.

Glen focused again and tried to awaken his holy power.

But only his heartbeat grew faster. The holy power inside his heart did not move at all.

“Damn it……”

Cursing under his breath, Glen flopped onto the ground.

‘Holy power is the force that lets humans rise beyond their limits to fight the demon race. But if I can’t use it, no matter how much I polish my sword skills, I’m just an ordinary human.’

To become strong in the world of Gray Eden with a human body, holy power was absolutely necessary.

And since the enemies he would face were demons who used demonic power, it was even more important.

At this rate, he would not survive the demon invasion that would come in the near future.

The cause was obvious. He had noticed it long ago.

‘It’s because of demonic power.’

But he did not know the exact principle of how demonic power interfered with holy power, nor how to solve it. That was what made it so frustrating.

‘I thought things were going smoothly with the Growth Potion and sword talent, and now holy power and demonic power are tripping me up instead. This really sucks.’

Nothing was going easily. Glen let out a hollow laugh, mocking his own situation.

‘Because of this, my plan is ruined.’

According to the original plan, today—ten days after starting training—Glen should have formed one Holy Ring and become a 1-star.

But since holy power would not activate, he could not accumulate it. And without accumulation, he could not refine it into a ring.

Over the past ten days, Glen had tried everything he could think of to use holy power. But there were no results.

He searched through the knowledge in his mind again just in case, but there was no information about such a rare case where holy power and demonic power coexisted.

‘I’m almost tempted to go to the Temple of Mors……’

Mors, the god of harmony and fusion.

The final boss of Gray Eden, and the only other being in the world who would possess both holy power and demonic power.

If anyone knew the answer, it would be him.

But his temple was more than ten days away by carriage.

Glen had neither the time nor a reason to go.

‘If only I never had demonic power to begin with, this wouldn’t be such a headache.’

Biting his lip, Glen lay there and stared up at the tree above.

The maple tree, at the end of autumn, was painted in red and yellow.

“At the very least, if it wasn’t demonic power mixed with holy power, but something like spirit power with holy power, it would be easier to ask around for help…… huh? Wait.”

As he stared at the maple tree, a strange light passed through Glen’s eyes. He suddenly sat up.

‘No, it doesn’t have to be holy power and demonic power, does it?’

As mentioned before, the world of Gray Eden contained many types of power besides holy power and demonic power—such as spirit power and ancient rune magic.

And while no one possessed holy power and demonic power at the same time, there were many beings who wielded two different powers together.

For example, demon swordsmen who used demonic power and spirit power at the same time, or human mages who used holy power and ancient rune magic together.

‘If it’s people like that, wouldn’t they have the answer to my problem?’

It was very possible.

Resting his chin on his hand, Glen thought seriously. Among those who used two powers at once, he recalled the one closest to this place.

Just as his thoughts were about to connect, a voice came from behind him.

“So you were here after all.”

Glen turned around.

A young man with similar features to his own, but a sturdier build, was walking toward him.

“Brother Edgar?”

Edgar Wordsworth.

The eldest son of the Wordsworth family, and Glen’s real older brother, three years older than him.

Beside Edgar stood a knight with enormous height and build, wearing armor.

“I don’t see Tris. Where did she go?”

“She was here until a moment ago, then she returned. What brings you here?”

“So Tris isn’t here. That’s fine. I came because I have business with you.”

At Edgar’s cold tone, the corner of Glen’s mouth twitched.

“Business?”

“Yes. You don’t seem to realize what kind of trouble you’re causing, so I came to tell you directly.”

Glen stood up.

“I’m causing trouble? To whom?”

“Do you think Tris is someone with time to spare?”

‘Oh? Look at this guy.’

It seemed he wanted to say that Glen was stealing Tris’s time.

It sounded ridiculous, but Glen decided to listen until the end.

Glen smiled faintly.

“What do you mean?”

“Do you have any idea how valuable a 5-star Holy Knight is? Tris is already busy nurturing talented knights. Do you really think it’s right for her to be tied down by a weakling like you?”

Cold eyes, with a trace of anger beneath them.

Glen narrowed his gaze.

“Are you saying that the time Tris spends on me is meaningless?”

“To be honest, after hearing that your talent was exceptional these past few days, I held a small bit of expectation. But—”

Edgar’s eyes moved to Glen’s chest. He snorted in disdain.

“It seems those were just rumors. How can someone who hasn’t even formed a single Holy Ring be called a genius, even with the family’s blood? You may be learning swordsmanship decently, but what use is that without a Holy Ring?”

No matter how great one’s swordsmanship was, it could not overcome the difference in rank created by the number of rings.

In the Wordsworth family, a genius was someone who formed Holy Rings years earlier than ordinary people.

Swordsmanship and physical strength were only secondary.

By Edgar’s standards, Glen was not a genius worthy of recognition.

But—

‘I’ve never once thought this body was a genius since becoming Glen.’

A terrible body. Cold stares from others. The karma of past reckless behavior.

What helped him untangle that twisted situation was not talent.

It was his knowledge and his unyielding will that never gave up, even in extreme situations.

The knowledge he gained from dying hundreds, thousands of times while playing the game. Effort that never betrayed him.

And it never would.

‘Besides, this guy knows nothing about what’s coming.’

In a few months, this family would be trampled and destroyed by the demon army.

That future would not change.

Even if Tris abandoned Glen and devoted every hour of every day to training talented knights, it would not change.

So how could the Wordsworth family escape that tragic future?

The answer was Glen.

The only existence that had deviated from the original game story—the man carrying Sung Yo-hwan’s soul.

His growth was the only path to survival, for both himself and the Wordsworth family.

Edgar’s words were logical.

But as an answer, they were wrong.

Glen had to prove it.

‘That I am the right answer.’

A sharp light flashed in Glen’s eyes.

“I’ve said enough. You understand now. Go back to the mansion and tell Tris that you’re giving up. That’s the only way a weakling like you can be of some help to the family.”

Clicking his tongue, Edgar turned away coldly.

“Would you like to see for yourself whether the time Tris spends on me is meaningless or meaningful?”

Edgar’s steps stopped.

He slowly turned around, his eyes filled with obvious anger.

“Even after all that, you still haven’t come to your senses—”

“I’ll prove it.”

“What?”

Edgar frowned deeply, clearly displeased. But Glen’s gaze was serious.

Edgar snorted.

“Prove it, you say? Fine. Then prove it. Robert.”

“Yes, young master.”

The knight strode toward Glen.

Glen’s entire body was swallowed by the knight’s shadow.

“The man standing before you is Sir Robert Gendrix, a 3-star Holy Knight. And Tris defeated a 3-star knight in a duel at the age of seventeen. Yes—exactly your age.”

Glen looked up at Robert.

A massive body, easily over two meters tall.

The eyes looking down from inside the helmet were irritatingly arrogant.

“I’ll give you three weeks to prepare. After that, if you defeat Sir Robert in a duel, I’ll acknowledge you and say nothing more. But if you lose, you will obey me from then on. Understood?”

Glen let out a small laugh.

He did not care about Edgar’s acknowledgment at all.

“Change the condition. My obedience and your acknowledgment don’t carry the same weight.”

“How amusing. Fine. What do you want?”

“Give me ‘Ensir,’ the item Father gave you.”

“Young master, that’s going too far. Ensir is meant for the family heir—”

“Do not interrupt your master, Robert.”

Edgar stopped Robert, who was about to raise his voice, then lifted his chin toward Glen.

“Fine. If you defeat Sir Robert, I will give you Ensir.”

“Yes. That’s fine.”

Seeing Glen answer so confidently, Edgar frowned.

“You seem confident. Do you have something to rely on?”

“Haven’t I told you many times? God is with me.”

“God? The one who hasn’t even granted you a single Holy Ring?”

“He only said it’s not the time yet.”

“You speak well. Be careful how you use God’s name. You might get dragged away by the Inquisition.”

Mocking him with a raised lip, Edgar turned and walked away.

Watching his older brother leave, Glen sneered.

“Idiot.”

Edgar made one mistake.

If even a single Holy Ring formed in Glen’s heart—

He would defeat Sir Robert.

Just imagining Edgar’s expression after losing made Glen’s lips curl upward.

Bang—

The door burst open, and Tris rushed into Glen’s room.

“Glen!”

Her face was full of urgency as she searched for him.

Glen was sitting at his desk, stuffing various items into a backpack.

“Oh, Tris. You came at just the right time. I was waiting—”

“I heard you’re going to duel Sir Robert in three weeks. Is that true?”

Seeing how calm Glen looked, Tris’s pupils shook violently.

“Why did you make such a bet?”

But Glen’s answer was completely beyond her understanding.

“Because God told me to.”

“Ah, Glen……”

Tris let out a short sigh.

She believed the duel was completely unreasonable.

A duel between a 3-star Holy Knight and Glen, who had no Holy Ring, was nothing more than a fight between an adult and a child.

“I don’t think this duel is a good idea. Even now, canceling it—”

“Don’t worry, sister. I’ll win.”

“What?”

Tris looked at Glen.

Ash-gray eyes filled with confidence.

It was an expression she had never seen on her younger brother before.

She could find no basis for that confidence.

Yet, his calm and peaceful expression felt strangely mysterious.

As if he truly believed in something.

“Haah.”

After a short sigh, Tris closed her eyes tightly, then opened them.

Her gentle gaze settled on Glen.

“Is there anything I can help you with?”

“I told you at the start, didn’t I? I was waiting for you.”

—You came at just the right time. I was waiting for you.

That was what Glen had said when she first entered.

“You were waiting for me?”

“Yes. It’s nothing difficult. Could you gather a few items for me?”

Confusion crossed Tris’s face, but soon her expression softened.

“What do you need?”

Her determined eyes said she would get anything he asked for.

A smile bloomed on Glen’s lips.

“Well, you see…”
