Chapter 21

Chapter 021

When the assistant director announced the notice loudly, everyone on each team began moving their hands faster.

“Hey, Jaehoon, install one more HMI light behind the veranda over there.”

Following the lighting director’s instructions, the lighting staff quickly got to work.

On one side, the special-effects makeup team and the makeup team, who were applying wound makeup to the actors’ faces and hands, also began working faster.

The way they used an airbrush to draw tiny bruises over the silicone-made wounds was so delicate that it looked like they were painting on a blank sheet of paper.

The rehearsal began.

“Okay, think of this as the real shoot and let’s do it properly.”

At Director Song’s words, strength returned to the actors’ eyes.

For the so-called handheld shot, the cinematographer placed the camera on his shoulder and held the grip with his hand.

“Make sure the focus is right.”

The cinematographer firmly warned the focus puller standing beside him while he adjusted the focus and aperture.

“All stand by. Action!”

At the director’s shout, the actors began performing an intense action sequence.

The cinematographer moved the camera on his shoulder from side to side, adding a flashy feeling to the actors’ movements.

“Cut! Okay!”

Confidence could be heard in the director’s voice as he called cut.

The feeling was good.

He had a strong feeling that they were going to get a really good scene.

Only then did the actors, who had just finished the exhausting action sequence, begin breathing heavily.

“How’s the camera?”

“Good.”

Director Song stared at the monitor connected to the camera for a moment, as if thinking about something, before speaking again.

“Cinematographer, what do you think about shooting this in one take?”

“You mean connecting scenes 6 through 13 together as one long take?”

“Yes.”

“The handheld movement is really good right now. It feels like a waste to divide all of this into separate shots.”

“Hmm…”

“I agree that the footage looks much better this way, but if we try to shoot everything at once and get an NG, can we recover from it?”

“At least if we divide the shots, even if we get an NG, we’ll be able to deal with it…”

Despite the cinematographer’s concern, Director Song still seemed reluctant to give up on the idea.

“That’s true…”

“But when we shoot it all at once as a long take, the actors’ emotions don’t get interrupted, and the action also feels much more alive.”

“Are you thinking about the action mise-en-scène from Oldboy or No Mercy?”

“Not exactly.”

“It just feels like it would create a contrast with the scene we expressed earlier through montage.”

“Hmm…”

“If we shoot the long take handheld and separately shoot a few close-ups, we could insert them between the scenes.”

“Yeah.”

“I think the footage would be much better that way too.”

“But if we get an NG, it’ll be a headache.”

“So let’s do a few more rehearsals until we can get an okay sign in one take, no matter what.”

“Yes!!”

Several more rehearsals followed.

Perhaps because of the pressure of having to finish the actual shoot in one take without an NG, Moon Hyunbin seemed even more nervous than during the previous rehearsals and repeatedly made mistakes during the action.

“I’m sorry.”

“I’m sorry.”

Director Song patted Moon Hyunbin on the shoulder, seemingly trying to ease his tension.

“No, Hyunbin.”

“You did well.”

“Just get the timing right and I think it’ll be fine.”

“You’re doing well, so don’t be too nervous.”

And then the actual shooting began.

“Rolling!”

“Scene 134, cuts 6 through 13, take one!”

“Action!”

At Director Song’s signal, the actors began their action.

Perhaps because of the countless rehearsals, their movements matched perfectly.

Moon Hyunbin snatched the knife from the opponent who was trying to stab him and immediately stabbed the opponent’s leg.

At exactly the right moment, the blood pouch installed inside the pants by the special-effects team burst open.

The knife was fake and the blood was fake, but once the blood flowed onto the floor, it looked incredibly realistic.

As Moon Hyunbin fought desperately against the members of the organization trying to kill him, he finally drove his knife into the neck of one of them.

At precisely the right moment, the special-effects team activated the blood-splatter device.

The effect of blood splashing across Moon Hyunbin’s face was perfectly executed.

“Cut! Okay!”

“Waaah~!”

At the director’s okay sign, cheers erupted from the staff who had been holding their breath.

“Okay, next we’re shooting the close-ups that will be used as inserts.”

“Actors, change your clothes again.”

“Team leader, how long will it take to reset the blood pouches and blood-splatter device?”

The special makeup team quickly answered Director Song, who was checking the situation.

“You’re only doing close-ups of the leg stabbing and the blood splashing on his face, right?”

“Then thirty minutes.”

The cinematographer, who was gathering the camera equipment and preparing to move, spoke.

“That works.”

“We have to change the film now anyway, so let’s start in thirty minutes.”

“Yes.”

“Okay!”

However, not long after the cinematographer went to change the film, he hurried back onto the set.

“Director Song!”

The urgency in his voice was completely different from usual, causing everyone on set to turn their eyes toward him.

“I think there’s something wrong with the film.”

“What do you mean the film is wrong?!”

Realizing how serious the situation was, Director Song quickly approached the cinematographer.

“The thing is…”

“The film got tangled inside the magazine.”

“I think it came off the roll and was just spinning freely.”

“Then… none of it was recorded?!”

When Producer Jung pressed him for an answer, the cinematographer lowered his head in despair.

No way…

Does that mean we have to shoot everything again?!

Everyone gathered there, including me, was at a loss for words for quite some time.

This wasn’t the first time a problem had occurred because of film.

Usually, the best solution in such a situation was to reshoot as quickly as possible.

But this time, the situation was much more serious.

Director Song silently looked over the filming location.

Blood was smeared all over the floor and walls.

After staring at the scene for a moment, he asked the art director.

“How long will it take to restore this to its original condition?”

“Well…”

“For everything else, we can just wipe the blood off.”

“But I’m not sure if we can remove the blood that has already soaked into the wallpaper.”

“Even if we assume we’ll clean it as much as possible?”

The art director walked toward the wall and carefully examined the bloodstains splattered all over the wallpaper.

“If we clean this with water, I think it’ll spread completely.”

“Besides, the wallpaper is thinner than I expected.”

“If we use water, it’ll become soaked, wrinkle, and peel off.”

“Unless we can find the exact same wallpaper and replace it.”

It was already 2 a.m.

Finding the exact same wallpaper at this hour was practically impossible.

A short sigh escaped Director Song’s mouth.

“Ha…”

“Just clean it as much as you can for now.”

“How long will it take?”

“Well…”

“Cleaning it and letting it dry…”

“About two hours?”

Two hours for the restoration meant they could only resume filming at 4 a.m.

But they absolutely had to finish filming by 6:30.

Trying to shoot all the remaining scenes within two and a half hours was simply impossible.

Right.

There’s no other way right now…

We just have to clean everything up as quickly as possible and continue shooting…

Just as I thought there was no solution, I happened to notice the entrance of the 24-pyeong model house that had been built right next to us.

Wait…!

Something suddenly flashed through my mind.

“Would it be impossible to change locations?”

At my unexpected words, all the staff turned their eyes toward me.

“Change locations?”

I turned my gaze and pointed toward the 24-pyeong model house that had been built beside us.

Everyone gathered there followed my gaze.

This model house had three spaces built exactly like real apartment interiors, divided into 24-pyeong, 36-pyeong, and 48-pyeong units.

The place we were currently filming in was the 36-pyeong model house.

As if he understood what I was thinking, Director Song quickly spoke.

“So, Gibaek, you mean we should give up on the 36-pyeong unit we’re currently filming in and move to either the 24-pyeong or 48-pyeong unit and shoot again?”

“But the living room structure over there is different.”

“It’ll look awkward when connected to the footage we already shot…”

This time, Producer Jung spoke with concern.

“Looking at what we’ve shot so far, the only full shot is the scene where the protagonist enters the apartment and sits on the sofa.”

“The rest are either bust shots or close-ups.”

“Since we have to reshoot everything from the action scene anyway…”

I hesitated for a moment.

Director Song quickly picked up where I left off.

“Right.”

“Even if we move to the 24-pyeong or 48-pyeong unit and shoot again, we only need to reshoot the scene where the protagonist, Sunwoo, enters the apartment.”

“We can keep everything else.”

“Can we make it work with the amount of film we have?”

After reaching his conclusion, Director Song quickly checked the remaining film.

“It’s possible!”

The cinematographer, who had been unable to say a single word because he felt guilty about causing trouble through his mistake, finally shouted out in relief.

“Wow, Gibaek really came through at the very end.”

Producer Jung and Cha Seungjun patted me on the shoulder proudly.

“There’s still one problem.”

“We have to ask the person in charge if we can use the place.”

“Right, we need permission.”

“Wait here.”

“I’ll go talk to the person in charge.”

Producer Jung hurried off toward the public relations office to find the person in charge.

Cha Seungjun and I followed him.

The person in charge had been working the night shift in the public relations office because of the filming and had been taking a short nap.

He woke up in surprise when he saw us suddenly entering.

“Are you already finished filming?”

“No.”

“We came because we have something to discuss…”

“Actually, we have a favor to ask.”

“A favor?”

After hearing the explanation, the person in charge casually gave us permission to use the 24-pyeong model house.

“I thought it was something serious.”

“It’s going to be demolished in a few hours anyway, so just use it comfortably.”

And so, we moved from the 36-pyeong model house to the 24-pyeong model house.

We finished preparing within thirty minutes.

Then, without a single hitch, we continued filming smoothly until 6:30 in the morning.

“Cut! Okay!”

The moment Director Song gave the final okay sign, all the staff gathered there erupted into cheers without anyone needing to start first.

“Waaah~~!”

And so, the first movie that would change my destiny finally came to an end.

After 45 days and 35 shooting days, the grand production finally drew its curtain.
