Chapter 56

Chapter 56

At the word “condition,” both Moon Changsu and I turned our gazes toward Ma Sanghee.

“What kind of condition?”

“Actually, when I left that gangster-like company I used to work for, I took a few of the kids they were training with me…”

She took them with her?

This was what Ma Sanghee explained.

Even at that lousy company, there were aspiring singers and aspiring actors who were being trained as trainees.

Among them, there were a few kids whom she felt were too talented to spend their time performing at nightclubs or acting in reenactment programs.

So she persuaded them to leave that terrible company, telling them that she would help them find a better agency.

Some of them actually left with her.

**“Honestly, all I wanted was to find the best possible agency for those kids.

But after hearing what you said, Gibaek, I don’t think sending them somewhere else is the best option.

I think I should protect them.

They’re kids who trusted me and followed me out…”**

“Then what are you planning to do?”

“They’re still young, so I should check on them whenever I have time and help them with things like auditions.

Of course, I’ll do my best to make sure it doesn’t interfere with the two actors’ work.

Still, you never know what might happen.”

Since Gil Boyoung and Moon Hyunbin were the ones asking her for help in the first place, I figured they would understand her situation.

I told Ma Sanghee that I would ask the two of them for their understanding.

I also said that I would help if there was anything I could do.

“I can let you know if we need extras during filming or anything like that.

Practical experience is important too.”

**“Really?

Then I’d be very grateful.”**

Ma Sanghee bowed her head politely.

Moon Changsu, who was sitting beside her, pouted and spoke.

“Baby, I can do things like that too.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at Moon Changsu’s cute jealousy.

“Ah, since we’re talking about them, tell me their names and ages.

If a suitable role comes up, I’ll let you know.”

“Ah, there are three of them.

Two boys and one girl.

They’re all seniors in high school.

Their names are Seong Nahyun, Kang Doyoon, and Seol Gichan.

If you need them, I can make profiles for them and give them to you.

The girl writes her own songs and sings incredibly well.”

A smile spread across Ma Sanghee’s face, as if simply thinking about the kids made her proud and happy.

W-Wait a minute…

Those names she just mentioned… could they possibly be…?!

From Ma Sanghee’s mouth came the names of the future leading stars of ‘Star Light’ and the actors who would eventually lead the Korean Wave.

Ha… haha… hahahaha…

It’s a jackpot!

For a moment, I desperately held back the laughter that was about to burst out.

I held it in so hard that I almost got the hiccups.

And so, the prologue of ‘Star Light’ was beginning.

“So, you’ve decided?”

“Yes.

I gratefully accept the opportunity you gave me.”

The next morning, after deciding to accept the planning team’s offer, I knocked on CEO Han Taesung’s office door.

“Of course.

That’s how it should be.

I have high expectations for you.

Hahaha.”

“I’ll work hard.

But I assume I won’t be the only one in the planning team.

Is there anyone you have in mind for the team?”

Han Taesung took a sip of the tea on the table before continuing.

“Of course.

But except for you, I’m planning to bring in both the team leader and the other team members from outside.

As a matter of fact, we’re almost done discussing it.”

“From outside?”

“Yes.

Since our company is basically focused on production, our idea of planning has mostly been limited to participating in script revisions during pre-production.

We don’t really have anyone who specializes in planning.”

Instead of answering, I slowly nodded.

In fact, until the late 1990s, planning in the Korean film industry was fairly simple.

If a director said they wanted to make a certain kind of movie, the production company would simply say, “Really?

Then shall we give it a try?”

That was basically the beginning and end of film planning.

It was only from the mid-2000s that a producer-centered film production system began to take root.

The system clearly defined what material to choose, why it should be chosen, how it would be made, and who would make it.

“Can I know who might be joining us?”

“Ah, the person we’re currently discussing is Kim Eunkyung.

She originally worked in marketing before moving into the film industry.

You know the movies ‘Your Wedding Story’ and ‘Old Wooden Chair,’ right?

She participated in planning both of those films.”

Kim Eunkyung…

I think I’ve heard that name before…

In any case, ‘Your Wedding Story’ and ‘Old Wooden Chair’ were movies I had loved when I was young.

“And Kim Eunkyung, the team leader, will bring in the rest of the team members herself.”

“Ah, yes…”

Hearing about the new planning team gave me a strange mixture of excitement and nervousness.

It felt as though I was standing at a completely new starting point.

“Oh, and the planning team will also start coming to work when Director Park’s movie begins filming.

Keep that in mind.”

That evening, I sat across from Cha Seungjun for the first time in a while, drinking with him.

“What?

A planning team?

We had a planning team at our company?”

“No.

They’re planning to separate the production team and the planning team.

The existing production team will remain as it is, and they’re creating a separate planning team.”

“Ah…

So that means you’re joining this newly created planning team?”

Instead of answering Cha Seungjun’s repeated questions, I simply nodded.

“It is something worth congratulating you on, but…

Maybe because it happened so suddenly, I don’t know how to feel.

I guess I’m a little stunned…”

“PD Baek will probably make an official announcement soon, but I thought I should tell you personally.

Are you disappointed?”

“What?

The PD already knows about this?”

Perhaps he was a little upset that I had told the PD before telling him.

Cha Seungjun pouted.

“It’s not that I told him first.

He already knew about it from the moment I received the offer.”

“Ah, I see…

What did PD Baek say?”

“He just supported me.”

“Yeah…”

Cha Seungjun emptied his soju glass.

He seemed to have a lot on his mind before speaking again.

“Actually, lately, when I look at you, it feels like you’re hiding a lot of things…

And somehow, it feels like we’ve grown distant compared to before.

I thought maybe it was because you took over the production accounting and started spending more time stuck in the office instead of being on set.

I figured once filming started and we worked together on set again, things would go back to how they were before.

But now this suddenly happened…”

Cha Seungjun’s complicated expression showed both disappointment and regret, and he couldn’t continue.

“What do you mean I’m hiding things?

There’s nothing like that.

And what do you mean we’ve grown distant?

It’s just that, like you said, we don’t get to see each other as often as before.”

“Exactly.

Things are already like this.

If you move to the planning team, we really won’t get to see each other anymore.”

As if his sadness had exploded, Cha Seungjun downed another glass of soju.

“No.

Even if I’m in the planning team, I’ll still visit the filming locations whenever I can.”

We ended up drinking together until late that night after a long time apart.

But just how much had I drunk?

I hadn’t even opened my eyes yet, but a headache was already pounding through my head.

“Ugh…”

I felt sour liquid rising from my stomach all the way up my throat.

“My goodness.

I thought things had finally calmed down for a while, but now my son has made me use the half-day leave I didn’t even use when I had the flu, just to make hangover soup first thing in the morning.

Hahaha.

What a wonderful son I have…”

“Mother, I think Gibaek’s liver is particularly weak.

We drank about the same amount, but he’s the only one who’s like this.”

“Really?

His liver?

Could it be hereditary?

His father had a weak liver too…

Anyway, Seungjun is such a good son.

Such a good son.

He doesn’t make his mother cook hangover soup just because he drank too much.”

What is this?

That conversation…

It feels like I’ve experienced this exact scene before.

Holding my aching stomach, I finally sat down.

Just then, Hyung Seungjun came into the room.

“If you’re awake, come out and eat.

Mother made hangover soup.”

I crawled toward the dining table in the living room almost on all fours.

“I heard you’re joining some planning team or something.

Why didn’t you tell your mother about it?”

Mom questioned me while I was drinking the hangover soup straight from the bowl.

“Hyung told you?

Why did Hyung have to tell you something so unnecessary…”

When I glared at Hyung Seungjun, he avoided my gaze and pretended to be busy with something else.

Mom glared at me.

“Why are you blaming Seungjun when he was just sitting there?

Do you think your mother is some sack of barley you can just leave in a corner?

And why didn’t you tell me that Min Seungjae is appearing in the movie you’re working on?

Min Seungjae and our family are distant relatives…”

“No.

I was going to tell you about joining the planning team soon.

And as for Actor Min Seungjae…

I’ve told you countless times.

At this point, he’s basically a stranger.

A stranger.”

Mom ignored my complaints and continued.

“If that were all, I wouldn’t say anything.

But I heard quite a few famous actors are appearing in the movie.

Why didn’t you tell me any of that?

Were you afraid I’d ask you to get their autographs?”

Mom continued complaining for quite a while.

She said we should have had a daughter, that raising a boy wasn’t any fun, and that I never said a word after coming home.

Damn that loose-lipped Cha Seungjun…

I glared at Cha Seungjun, the root cause of this entire mess.

Cha Seungjun subtly raised the corner of his mouth at me, as if teasing me.

It was probably his own small and petty revenge against me for moving to the planning team alone without discussing it with him even once.

Just you wait, Cha Seungjun!

Time once again flew by in a blur.

During that time, Ma Sanghee officially began working as Gil Boyoung and Moon Hyunbin’s personal manager.

Meanwhile, I was so busy handing over my work to the newly hired production accountant that I barely had time to breathe.

And then the day of the full script reading arrived.

The script reading was scheduled for 2 p.m., but the production and directing departments had been moving busily in and out of the studio since 7 a.m., preparing everything needed for the reading.

They weren’t the only ones who had arrived early.

Since all the actors would be gathered together, the costume and makeup teams also came to the studio early in the morning to check their costumes, hair, and makeup.

Then, at 9 a.m., the younger actors with smaller roles began arriving at the studio for their costume, hair, and makeup checks.

“Team Leader, you absolutely have to finish before 1:30.

You know that, right?”

“Good grief, how many times are you going to say that?

We have to do our jobs too.”

The costume team leader shot back at Cha Seungjun after being repeatedly rushed by him.

As if he were used to situations like this, Cha Seungjun slipped a piece of Yeonyanggaeng, a sweet red-bean jelly snack, into the costume team leader’s pocket and smiled.

“Come on~

Why are you frowning that pretty face?

Eat this and keep up your energy~”

The costume team leader seemed to cheer up at Cha Seungjun’s cute behavior and gave a small laugh.

A little after noon, Gil Boyoung and Moon Hyunbin entered the studio together with their manager, Ma Sanghee.

A few minutes later, Han Hyejoo also arrived.
