Chapter 97

Chapter 97

“What were you two talking about so secretly?”

While I was lost in thought for a moment, Cha Seung-jun walked over, looking back and forth between Han Hye-joo, who was walking away, and me.

“What do you mean, talking...?”

Seeing Cha Seung-jun repeatedly wiggle his eyebrows as if teasing me, I quickly changed the subject.

“Hyung, how have Seo Ji-soo and Jang Se-won been on set lately?”

“What do you mean, how have they been? What exactly are you asking?”

“You know... the atmosphere between them.”

I lowered my voice slightly while glancing around.

Only then did Cha Seung-jun seem to understand what I meant. He lowered his voice as well.

“Did you hear something too?”

“Hear what?”

“What? Weren’t you asking because you already knew something?”

“What is it? Is there really something going on?”

When I urged him to answer, Cha Seung-jun hesitated for a moment before continuing.

“Well, Seo Ji-soo and Jung Se-won have been sticking together a little too much on set. The staff are already whispering that they might be dating or something...”

“Seriously?”

Damn. So Han Hye-joo wasn’t just saying that for no reason...

I had been so busy lately that I rarely visited the filming set.

Because of that, I hadn’t noticed anything at all.

“Hyung, if something like this was happening, you should’ve at least given me a heads-up.”

“Well, they’re both single, good-looking adults. If they like each other, what are we supposed to do about it?”

“If they were just an ordinary man and woman, or if we weren’t in the middle of filming, then sure. But right now, those two are the leads of our drama. If dating rumors break out before the drama even starts...”

It wasn’t uncommon for actors working together on a drama or movie to become involved in dating rumors or scandals.

In a way, it could even be seen as proof that the chemistry between the actors was good.

If handled properly as publicity, it could raise expectations for the drama.

But there was another side to it.

Instead of focusing on the drama itself, viewers and the media could become obsessed with the actors’ private lives.

That could ruin the dramatic tension and make it harder for viewers to immerse themselves in the characters.

That was why broadcasting stations didn’t want a drama’s promotional focus to suddenly shift toward scandals or dating rumors.

In serious cases, advertisers or sponsors who were sensitive about an actor’s public image could cancel PPL agreements.

Advertising schedules could fall apart as well.

Depending on the situation, people might even demand that an actor’s scenes be completely edited out or that the script be rewritten.

If that happened, the entire production schedule could be thrown into chaos.

Dating rumors and scandals involving actors were truly a double-edged sword.

People like me had already learned through countless mistakes that the negative side was usually much bigger than the positive one.

That was why we preferred to put out even the smallest spark before it turned into a fire.

Besides, Seo Ji-soo and Jung Se-won would actually become a couple in the future.

And eventually, because of the public reaction, they would even break up.

This wasn’t something that would necessarily end with a harmless dating rumor.

It could turn into a real problem.

Cha Seung-jun understood exactly what I meant, so he couldn’t say anything more.

“Hyung, let’s put out the fire before it gets any bigger.”

Leaving Cha Seung-jun tilting his head as if wondering what I meant, I walked toward the production team of Midnight Entertainment News.

“Those two... putting them together like that actually looks better than I expected.”

“Right? When did they get so close? When we came to film the full script reading last time, they were still pretty awkward around each other...”

“Exactly. Maybe sparks flew while they were filming? Either way, I think people will react to this when it airs.”

Sure enough, just as Han Hye-joo had said, the production crew of Midnight Entertainment News were gathered in one corner of the studio.

They were watching Seo Ji-soo and Jung Se-won while talking quietly among themselves like hyenas staring at prey.

If handled badly, this could easily develop into dating rumors or a scandal.

Cha Seung-jun and I exchanged glances without saying anything.

Cha Seung-jun moved first.

He quickly slipped into the middle of the Midnight Entertainment News production crew and spoke in his usual cheerful manner.

“Our actors are all extremely close with each other. They’re practically like real brothers and sisters. Honestly, they’re so close that I’m worried viewers might see them as siblings instead of lovers. Haha.”

At first, the Midnight Entertainment News crew looked startled by our sudden appearance.

But soon, they smirked as if saying, Come on, we’re all professionals here.

“Come on~ In what world do those two look like siblings? Anyone can see they look like a couple. Hehe...”

“That’s a dangerous thing to say. How do they look like a couple? Anyone can see they have real sibling chemistry. We wouldn’t want someone spreading baseless rumors and ending up with everyone arguing about lawsuits afterward, would we?”

I knew that with things like this, if you didn’t respond firmly from the beginning, you would only regret it later.

So I decided to come on strong.

My words were almost a threat.

The Midnight Entertainment News production crew looked slightly offended, their expressions turning awkward.

“Are you sure there’s really nothing going on? It doesn’t exactly look like nothing... Ahem...”

“Come on, why are we acting like this when we’re all family?”

As if trying to soften the suddenly tense atmosphere, Cha Seung-jun jumped in again.

Both our drama and Midnight Entertainment News aired on MBS.

So he jokingly emphasized that we were all part of the same MBS family.

“Tch. What family? You guys are outsourced anyway.”

“Hey now~ Are you really going to hurt my feelings like that? Since we’re talking about this, we didn’t invite any other media outlets. We practically gave Midnight Entertainment News exclusive access. If you keep acting like this, I’m going to tell Director Hwang Dong-hyuk everything.”

Cha Seung-jun sounded half joking and half serious.

Only then did the Midnight Entertainment News crew lower their gaze as if reluctantly giving in.

Sometimes, I disliked Cha Seung-jun’s easygoing personality.

His habit of laughing things off and joking around could make him seem indecisive.

But in moments like this, I had to admit that his personality was incredibly useful.

“Fine. But in exchange, let us interview Seol Gi-chan. I heard Seol Gi-chan is making a cameo as the child version of the main character?”

Of course.

Media people never change...

Their determination to take something back with them was almost exhausting.

Still, that was their work.

Their job.

Thinking about it that way left a bitter taste in my mouth.

“Ah... that’s... Besides, Seol Gi-chan isn’t even coming to today’s poster shoot...”

Cha Seung-jun tried to politely turn them down, but the Midnight Entertainment News team refused to let go.

“It doesn’t have to be today. Just set a date whenever you can. We’ll go to him. If even that’s difficult, he’ll be attending the production presentation, right? We can do it then.”

“Ah... We haven’t even decided whether he’ll attend the production presentation yet...”

Cha Seung-jun glanced toward me, silently asking what we should do.

Fine. Let’s give them something.

They had already backed down once.

It was only fair that we accept one of their requests in return.

“All right. I’ll arrange a separate interview schedule with Seol Gi-chan and contact you.”

“Really?”

Instead of answering, I simply nodded.

Cha Seung-jun leaned toward me and whispered.

“Hey, is that really okay? Can you actually arrange an interview with Seol Gi-chan?”

“Don’t worry. I said it because it’s possible.”

“Well, I suppose you do have ‘Starlight’ wrapped around your finger... Ahem...”

I simply smiled.

Once the poster shoot ended, Cha Seung-jun and I met with Seo Ji-sook and Jung Se-won’s managers to confirm the situation.

“S-Sorry... We’ve been telling them to be careful, but...”

“Then are you saying the two of them really are dating?”

At my question, Seo Ji-soo and Jung Se-won’s managers exchanged awkward glances.

Then one of them carefully answered.

“Well... it’s more like... there’s something between them. A kind of flirting stage... Ahem.”

So they weren’t seriously dating yet?

I felt briefly relieved.

But then—

“Wait. If that was the case, you should’ve told us beforehand. Just look at what almost happened today...”

Until just a little while ago, Cha Seung-jun had been saying that there was nothing we could do if two single people liked each other.

Now, he had completely changed his attitude and was lecturing the two managers.

The managers could only bow their heads apologetically.

“Of course, if two single, attractive people like each other and start dating, normally that would be something to congratulate them on. But considering my position right now, I can’t simply congratulate them and leave it at that.”

If news of their relationship got out, I had to consider what effect it would have on our drama.

I couldn’t exactly order them to stop seeing each other.

But it was my job and responsibility to make sure they were extremely careful.

“We completely understand your position, Team Leader Min. And we’ll make sure they’re as careful as possible so that the situation you’re worried about doesn’t happen...”

The two managers repeatedly lowered their heads.

“Yes. Anyway, please make sure they’re careful. If dating rumors break out before the drama even starts, it’ll make things difficult for all of us, right?”

After the managers left, Cha Seung-jun spoke.

“Hey, when you see something like that, don’t you think being a manager is a terrible job too? I mean, what did the managers even do wrong?”

“Hyung, from now on, you need to keep a closer eye on the actors while you’re on set too. And make sure the staff watch what they say. It’s better to be careful. You know how sensitive this industry is to rumors.”

“Well, obviously... but there’s that saying, right? You can’t hide a sneeze or love. Can something like this really be hidden just because we tell them to be careful?”

Either way, both Seo Ji-soo and Jung Se-won had extremely strong fanbases.

One careless rumor could even cause the drama’s ratings to rise or fall.

So I told him we needed to pay as much attention to it as possible.

Then, a few days later, Midnight Entertainment News finally aired.

The online reaction began pouring in almost immediately.

Everyone on the planning team stayed at the office instead of going home.

We gathered in front of the conference room TV with our laptops open and watched Midnight Entertainment News together.

Fortunately, Seo Ji-soo and Jung Se-won didn’t look nearly as much like a real couple on television as I had feared.

It seemed the cameras had failed to capture that strange, indescribable atmosphere that occasionally passed between the two of them.

“Team Leader, the comments are starting to come in.”

At Planning Team member Lee Hyun-woo’s words, who had been monitoring the MBS website, the actors’ fan cafés, and social media on his laptop, I quickly turned toward the screen.

Seo Ji-soo and Jung Se-won look better together than I expected.

Just seeing the poster shoot makes the drama look fun. I’m definitely watching the premiere!

Their chemistry is surprisingly good.

I bet my wrist there’s something going on between those two!

Idiot. There’s nothing special going on, and you’re already betting your wrist. LOL.

“The community reactions aren’t bad either.”

“Yeah. This seems just about right.”

Maybe it was because I had warned them to be careful.

Even on set, the two of them continued filming without causing any major issues.
