Chapter 13

A profession was a summary of the life one had lived in the past...

On the way back to the village, Xia Mingyu kept thinking about that question.

Most of his previous life seemed to have been spent in school.

He basically woke up at six every morning, got ready, went to class, and could only crawl into bed around ten at night.

It had practically been more Spartan than Sparta itself...

After finally getting into a fairly decent university, he immediately found himself thrown into another brutal competition for grades.

He had worked so hard that he sometimes stayed up until the early hours of the morning just grinding through online courses.

When he thought about it, the four words academic workhorse seemed to perfectly describe his past life.

But...

How could there possibly be such a ridiculous profession?

Xia Mingyu sighed.

Before he realized it, he and Berg had already returned to the village.

The last rays of sunlight spilled across the dirt paths of the village.

In the distance, the fruit groves rippled like green waves beneath the evening breeze, while a faint and delicious aroma of food drifted through the air.

“Your Highness, you’re back!”

Anliya stood at the entrance of the village with a delighted expression.

She had changed back into her patched, belted tunic, but the simple clothing did nothing to lessen the young girl’s beauty.

Her golden hair shone softly beneath the sunlight, while her clear blue eyes looked like reflections of the sky itself.

A woven basket hung from Anliya’s left wrist.

When she lifted the linen cloth covering it, four neatly arranged pieces of white bread were revealed, still giving off warm steam.

The three of them entered the village together and walked toward home.

“Your Highness, you must be tired after hunting all day. This white bread has just come out of the oven. Please have some.”

The young girl took a piece of white bread from the basket, spread some jam made from red fruits over it, and handed it to him with an expectant look.

“Thank you.”

Xia Mingyu accepted the bread and gently took a bite.

A simple yet pure wheat fragrance immediately spread through his mouth.

Mixed within it was the faint freshness of the jam.

It was slightly sweet, yet carried just the right amount of sourness.

The warmth of the bread made the aroma of the jam even richer.

Every little piece of fruit burst between his teeth, leaving behind a wonderful aftertaste.

“Delicious!”

Xia Mingyu praised it before taking another huge bite.

“As long as Your Highness likes it.”

Hearing his praise, Anliya’s eyes curved into happy crescents.

The corners of her lips rose without her even realizing it, revealing a row of clean white teeth.

“Big Sister Anliya, I spent the entire day hunting with His Highness today. Can I have a piece of white bread too?”

Berg sniffed the air repeatedly.

Like a starving wolf, his eyes were locked firmly onto the remaining three pieces of white bread inside the basket.

As an excellent hunter, he normally had no shortage of meat.

But he had never been willing to spend money on fragrant and sweet white bread like this.

“No, Little Berg. I only baked them. The ingredients for this bread were fine wheat that everyone specifically gave to His Highness.”

Anliya rejected him without hesitation.

Hearing that, Berg immediately turned his head and stared pitifully at Xia Mingyu.

Clearly, he had realized that begging Anliya was useless.

If he wanted bread, he had to beg His Highness.

Xia Mingyu smiled slightly.

“I’ll eat one more. You two can have one of the remaining pieces each.”

“Thank you, Your Highness!”

Before Anliya could even react, Berg’s hand shot forward at astonishing speed.

He grabbed a piece of white bread and devoured it in just a few bites like a hungry tiger pouncing on its prey.

“Idiot Berg.”

Anliya kicked Berg in annoyance.

Then she picked up the final piece of white bread and began eating it in small bites.

“Thank you, Your Highness.”

For some reason, the girl’s footsteps became noticeably lighter.

When she looked at the handsome face of the young man beside her, an additional trace of tenderness appeared in her eyes.

After walking for a while, Anliya spoke again.

“Your Highness, the cellar you taught us to dig has already been completed. Would you like to take a look?”

“Sure.”

Inside the dim cellar, baskets filled with red fruits had been neatly placed on a floor covered with dry straw.

A faint fruity fragrance filled the air.

Tiny droplets of water had condensed across the walls.

“Your Highness, after putting the red fruits in the cellar, the amount of time we can store them has increased greatly.”

Anliya softly gave her report.

“They can now last long enough for Foster Father to find another traveling merchant willing to buy them.”

Her eyes were filled with admiration as she continued.

“And we also made jam using the method you taught us. Everyone who tasted it said it was delicious. I’m sure we’ll be able to sell it for a very good price.”

As expected of a noble prince.

His Highness was truly knowledgeable.

He even knew methods for preserving fruit and making jam.

“Mm. That’s good.”

Xia Mingyu nodded.

At the same time, he casually picked up a crystal-clear red fruit from one of the baskets and took a large bite.

In truth, he had merely tried his best to remember all those random short videos he had watched in his previous life.

He had taught the villagers those methods with the mindset of simply giving them a try.

He hadn’t expected them to actually work.

Tap, tap, tap.

At that moment, Berg, who had also reached out to take a red fruit only to have Anliya slap his hand away, suddenly changed expression.

The resentful look he had been giving his older sister disappeared.

His face became serious.

“Your Highness, someone has entered the village on horseback.”

Berg paused before adding,

“And there’s more than one horse.”

As a hunter, Berg’s senses were sharper than those of ordinary people.

That was why he could hear the sound of horses in the distance.

Multiple horses...

Xia Mingyu frowned slightly.

If there had only been one horse, it was probably a traveling merchant.

But several horses could only mean...

A powerful voice suddenly echoed throughout the entire village like the ringing of a massive bell.

“I am Thorin Brooke, a squire knight serving the great Lord Hughes!”

“All villagers of Fruit Basket Village, gather in the center of the village immediately!”

Immediately afterward, the sound of hurried footsteps could be heard outside.

Clearly, the villagers were rushing toward the center of the village.

Anliya looked at Xia Mingyu.

“Your Highness, are you coming with us?”

Everyone in the village had been ordered to go.

Naturally, she and Berg had to attend as well.

Xia Mingyu thought for a moment before asking,

“Has the straw hat I asked for been finished?”

“Aunt Hannah has already finished weaving it.”

Anliya replied.

After learning that it had been requested by the prince who had saved their village, Aunt Hannah had practically worked day and night without rest.

That was the only reason she had managed to finish it in such a short amount of time.

“Then I’m going.”

The remaining sunlight of the evening fell upon the old oak tree in the center of the village.

Its mottled shadows swayed across the ground.

At this moment, the area was already packed with people.

The villagers surrounded the old oak tree so tightly that there was hardly any room left.

Under the shade of the oak tree, a knight riding a tall horse waited silently.

His face was weathered by age and experience.

His eyes were cold and sharp, while a thick beard covered the lower half of his face.

He was a little over 1.7 meters tall and looked to be around forty years old.

The knight wore a shining coat of chainmail beneath the sunlight.

It was woven from hundreds of circular steel rings.

Its surface was polished and gleaming, while the armor itself looked extremely sturdy.

At the center of his chest was the image of a vicious wolf’s head.

Even the wolf’s sharp fangs had been carved in lifelike detail, making anyone who looked at it feel a chill.

But the most eye-catching thing was something else entirely.

Above the knight’s head floated two lines of emerald-green labels.

They read:

[Squire]

[Knight]

Behind the knight were several attendants who were also mounted on horses.

There was also a horse-drawn carriage that was clearly meant to carry collected tax money.

Xia Mingyu stood hidden among the crowd, quietly observing everything.

Green identity protection and profession protection...

He narrowed his eyes thoughtfully.

“So this is what Berg meant by a supernatural rank?”
