Chapter 18

“Insolence!”

Just as Mills’s filthy hand was about to touch the tip of Xia Mingyu’s shoe, Knight Thorin, who had been kneeling on one knee the entire time, finally could not hold himself back any longer.

Whoosh!

The powerful physical abilities granted by becoming a supernatural knight allowed Knight Thorin to cross more than ten meters in an instant.

He rushed behind Mills, subdued the greedy merchant, and slammed him to the ground.

Because Thorin was a knight and his actions were considered the lawful enforcement of order, the Improper Protection ability of Mills’s Liar Merchant profession did not activate.

Knight Thorin pressed one hand firmly against Mills’s neck while taking the fine steel longsword that one of his attendants had picked up and handed to him.

His killing intent surged.

“Your Highness, shall I kill this insolent fool who dared offend you?”

“Wait, Sir Knight. Before that, I believe I should first explain the entire situation to you.”

Xia Mingyu spoke calmly.

“Your Highness, it would be my honor to listen to your sacred words. I will listen carefully.”

Like a clown performing a face-changing trick, the cold murderous expression on Knight Thorin’s face instantly disappeared.

In its place came a brilliant smile.

Even the wrinkles on his face seemed to bloom like flowers.

“Some time ago, this Clay traveling merchant paid a considerable deposit and swore before the gods that he would return when the red fruits were harvested. In exchange, he demanded that the villagers refuse to sell to any other traveling merchants...”

Xia Mingyu slowly explained everything.

A short while later—

“So that’s what happened!”

Knight Thorin exclaimed in realization.

He finally understood why such a noble prince had lowered himself to the point of robbing a merchant.

It turned out that Mills had broken an oath made before the gods just for the sake of making money.

Even for a Clay, that was simply too outrageous!

Wait...

Knight Thorin’s expression suddenly turned ugly.

He suddenly seemed to understand why several villages had failed to pay their taxes this year.

And by coincidence, all of those villages mainly produced fruit.

“You damned bastard! You really are a fine example of a Clay!”

Knight Thorin pressed down hard on Mills’s neck.

Veins bulged across his forehead as he gritted his teeth in fury.

Looking at Mills’s face turning red from lack of air, Thorin’s killing intent boiled inside him.

If not for the noble prince standing before him, he would already have stabbed several holes into Mills’s body.

Knight Thorin spoke seriously.

“Your Highness, just give the order. I will immediately kill this greedy merchant who shows no respect for the gods or for you.”

His expression grew colder.

“I promise I won’t let him die too quickly.”

In the past, Thorin had learned a few techniques from the executioners of the territory.

By stabbing certain non-lethal areas, he could make the condemned person suffer greatly while slowly bleeding to death.

“P-Please... please spare me, Your Highness!”

Mills begged with slurred speech.

“I-I’m willing to give you all my money! There are two more gold sols hidden inside the soles of my shoes!”

He had not yet fulfilled his dream of becoming a merchant as wealthy as the legendary sage Franken.

He had not yet defeated his brothers and inherited the enormous fortune left behind by his father.

He absolutely did not want to die here as some unknown nobody!

Watching the scene before him, Xia Mingyu fell into thought.

He knew that Mills’s life was now completely in his hands.

As long as he gave the order, this proud knight would take Mills’s life without the slightest hesitation.

Killing him might feel satisfying, but...

He was a modern socialist youth!

A university student carrying the responsibilities of the new era!

How could he possibly do something so cruel?

Xia Mingyu smiled slightly.

“Sir Knight, there is an ancient saying from my homeland.”

“Repay kindness with kindness, and repay resentment with justice.”

Xia Mingyu continued softly,

“Since Mills never intended to take my life, I will not take his life either.”

The moment those words were spoken, Mills was overjoyed.

Knight Thorin, however, frowned slightly.

He thought that perhaps this prince was a little too kind.

If it had been his own lord, Mills would probably already have several bloody holes in his body.

Then Xia Mingyu leisurely added,

“Therefore, Sir Knight, please help me send him...”

He smiled.

“...to the Capital of Slaves.”

Mills: “???”

The smile on Mills’s face instantly froze.

Meanwhile, a trace of awe appeared in Knight Thorin’s eyes as he looked at Xia Mingyu.

No matter the era or one’s status, a person with a strong desire for revenge would always earn the fear and respect of those around them.

Even if that respect came from terror.

“No! No! I don’t want to be sold as a slave!”

Mills cried out desperately.

“Kill me! Please, just kill me!”

Because he had once researched the slave market in the Capital of Slaves for business purposes, Mills knew exactly what kind of miserable lives slaves lived there.

Calling that place hell would not be an exaggeration at all.

Especially after he had once visited the collection of a slave merchant from his own race.

Even though Mills had always considered himself courageous, after returning home from that visit, he had vomited for several days and had been unable to eat.

His cries sounded incredibly miserable.

Unfortunately for him, the people surrounding him were villagers who had nearly lost their families and livelihoods because of his schemes.

So no matter how pitifully he begged, all he received were hateful stares from the villagers.

Some even threw rotten red fruits at him.

Under everyone’s watchful eyes, Mills’s hands and feet were tied.

A rag was stuffed into his mouth.

Then he was tossed into the carriage.

After everything had been dealt with, Knight Thorin and his attendants knelt on one knee before Xia Mingyu.

Knight Thorin spoke respectfully.

“Honored Your Highness, may I ask you to tell me your name?”

“Before long, my lord, Viscount Hughes, will personally come to pay his respects to you.”

“Mingyu Xia.”

Xia Mingyu answered calmly.

“May the gods protect you, Your Highness Mingyu.”

Knight Thorin wore a devout expression.

He traced a circle over the wolf-head emblem on his chest armor before finally standing up.

Then he mounted his horse together with his attendants and departed.

Clop, clop, clop...

Beneath the glow of the setting sun, the knight and his companions gradually disappeared into the distance amid the rapid sound of horses’ hooves.

At the same time, however, the village completely erupted with excitement.

“Your Highness, may the gods bless you!”

“Your Highness, thank you for your mercy! Please, you must accept the flower wreath I made for you!”

“Your Highness, thank you for punishing that damned Clay traveling merchant!”

One woman cried as she continued,

“My husband became so distraught after being deceived by him that he lost his senses. While picking red fruits, he slipped and fell to his death.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Thank you, Your Highness!”

...

Having survived the tax crisis, the villagers surrounded Xia Mingyu.

They cheered loudly and expressed their gratitude from the bottom of their hearts.

Suddenly—

“BERG, YOU DAMNED BASTARD! GET OVER HERE!”

Village Chief Robert’s roar exploded like a clap of thunder, instantly shocking everyone into silence.

He glared furiously at Berg.

His expression looked terrifying.

Even his frost-white hair seemed as though it was about to stand on end from anger.

“Y-Yes...!”

Berg had never seen the village chief this furious before.

He immediately hurried over to Robert.

“You bastard!”

Robert roared.

“How dare you reveal His Highness’s information?!”

His fury only grew stronger.

“Have you forgotten the agreement between the village and His Highness?!”

Slap!

Robert struck Berg hard across the face.

The young boy’s slightly childish face immediately became red and swollen.
