Chapter 13

Meanwhile, Kang Jinsu was restless and uneasy.

“Ugh… what should I do if he keeps acting like that?”

At that moment, Daeho turned Kang Jinsu around and spoke softly.

Chuk.

“Let’s go.”

“Huh?”

“I said, let’s go.”

Daeho smirked slightly, making Kang Jinsu even more flustered.

“Is it… okay if we go like this?”

“Then… are you trying to intervene?”

“No, it’s not that.”

Even as he was being led, Kang Jinsu kept glancing back.

His hesitation made it clear he didn’t know what to do.

Noticing this, Daeho spoke quietly.

“Do you know the saying ‘what goes around comes around’?”

“Yes.”

“This is one of those cases.”

“Eh?”

“Let’s go. It’s too noisy here.”

Daeho smiled lightly and headed back toward the nurse station.

A short while later.

In the ER director’s office, Park Youngjun stood with his head bowed deeply in front of Director Lee Geontak.

The atmosphere was heavy, almost unbearably tense.

Yet only Park Youngjun looked that way.

Director Lee maintained a calm smile, though veins on his forehead hinted at hidden irritation.

Pijik, pijik.

“Dr. Park, what kind of disgrace is this?”

“I’m sorry. I managed it before the problem got bigger.”

“Compensation, huh. Well, that’s one way to keep it quiet.”

“I apologize for causing concern.”

Park Youngjun bowed so low his head nearly touched the floor.

Then, the phone rang. Director Lee excused himself.

“Let me take this call first, and we’ll continue. Yes, Vice Director Han, this is Lee Geontak.”

He answered casually, as if nothing had happened.

But the voice on the line wasn’t Vice Director Han Seunghoon’s usual calm tone.

“-Director Lee, what are you doing? Why do I hear such nonsense in my ear?!”

“Haha, Vice Director, sorry for the worry. Everything was handled properly, and I’ll manage it to prevent recurrence.”

“-Laughing? Is this something to laugh about?”

Vice Director Han’s thunderous scolding crackled through the phone.

Finally, Director Lee’s smile faded.

“I take full responsibility. I’ll proceed with disciplinary education.”

“-Director Lee, the ER is unstable. You know that, right?”

“Yes, I’m aware.”

“-If you keep laughing like that, one day you might be out of a job. Do it properly.”

Clack!

The terrifying pressure from Vice Director Han ended the call.

Director Lee put down the phone, ears twitching from irritation.

“Ugh… hmm.”

“Uh, Director…”

Park Youngjun cautiously spoke up.

At that moment, Director Lee slammed the desk, his voice sharp.

Bang!

“Dr. Park, why are these problems suddenly surfacing? What’s causing this?”

Hic, “Y-yes… I understand.”

“Understand? That’s nonsense!”

Director Lee shouted, face red.

Sensing danger, Park Youngjun froze completely.

“I’ll get rid of the black-haired foreigner as quickly as possible right in front of you, Director!”

“We’ll see.”

Director Lee replied bluntly.

In both their minds, the same name came up: Richard Choi.

At the same time, Nurse Lee Suyeon came to find Daeho.

“Sir, Professor Choi Jeonggu is calling.”

“Choi Jeonggu?”

Daeho tilted his head, unfamiliar with the name from the ER.

Then his eyes lit up.

Ping!

‘Could it be?’

The name sounded familiar. He remembered seeing it first in Sangbok’s EMR.

“-Emergency surgery lead surgeon: Choi Jeonggu.”

Daeho asked, just to be sure.

“OS professor?”

“Yes. Orthopedic Surgery.”

“Understood. I’ll go meet him and return.”

Daeho answered briefly and turned.

He arrived at Outpatient Building 3 in a single stride.

There were several orthopedic outpatient rooms.

Many patients were waiting outside.

“Ugh.”
 “Ouch.”

Since most came with bone issues, some were clearly uncomfortable.

Suddenly, two doctors around Daeho’s age appeared from the opposite hallway.

Tall, fair-skinned, both looking extremely professional and intelligent.

Thud, thud.

“Wait, haven’t met these people before.”
“Could they be the Richard Choi Jinsu mentioned?”
“Ah! The one who came from the U.S.?”
“That’s him? Oh, he’s pretty young.”

The wary doctors relaxed noticeably.

Unlike the ER, the atmosphere here was different.

Daeho greeted them politely first.

“I’m Richard Choi, Emergency Medicine. Nice to meet you.”

“I’m Lee Youngwoo.”
 “I’m Kim Sangjun.”

They shook hands firmly, exchanging greetings.

From a glance at their staff cards, they had similar experience levels, which explained the smooth first greeting.

Still, this reaction was very different from the ER.

Daeho didn’t need to act harshly here.

He continued courteously.

“Looking forward to working together.”

“Nonsense. We know how well you performed yesterday.”

“…”

Daeho tilted his head silently.

Lee Youngwoo raised an eyebrow.

“I went down to the ER. Assisted in the emergency surgery as well.”

“Really? The surgery went so well, the patient was practically flying around afterward.”

Daeho led the conversation gently.

Lee Youngwoo smiled.

“You say that, but Dr. Richard did it all himself.”

“I just opened a little breathing space for the patient’s leg,” Daeho replied humbly.

They knew about Daeho’s work last night, but only saw the friendly, approachable Richard Choi before them.

“Not quite what I heard.”
“They said he has a terrible temper.”

They whispered to each other, unaware Daeho could hear.

He spoke aloud.

“Rumors are always exaggerated, aren’t they?”

“Ah, sorry for doubting in front of you.”

“It’s faster to ask directly if curious.”

“Of course. By the way, how’s it here?”

“I came because Professor Choi Jeonggu called.”

Daeho spoke openly. Mentioning a name inevitably led to evaluation.

His guess proved correct.

Lee Youngwoo immediately brightened.

“Professor Choi Jeonggu is excellent.”
“Yes, he doesn’t overload schedules, and sometimes even buys us drinks after work.”

Kim Sangjun chimed in, and Lee Youngwoo gave a thumbs up.

“No one in Orthopedics dislikes Professor Choi.”
“Who would? If someone did, they’d be the problem.”

Both doctors’ opinions aligned perfectly.

Still, Daeho knew the real evaluation came from meeting him directly.

Satisfied with the information, Daeho decided to leave.

“Thank you. I should go before it gets late.”
 “Yes, we should too.”
 “Then, excuse me.”

Swish.

As Daeho passed, Lee Youngwoo asked casually.

“Ah, Dr. Richard, can I say hi next time we meet?”

A friendly question.

Daeho smiled slightly.

“You mean we’re friends?”

“Uh… yes, friends. Haha!”

“Hehe. Bold personality. Let’s grab a drink off-schedule soon.”

The doctors laughed, trying to build camaraderie.

Daeho didn’t refuse.

“Anytime. Take care.”
 “Yeah. Richard, see you!”

Thump, thump.

They shook fists in a cheerful greeting and parted.

Daeho judged them favorably.

‘Some good people here.’

The doctors’ impression matched.

“It usually takes me a while to make friends, but we’re already tight?”
“Good personality. Direct, polite. We’ll see him in the ER often.”

Daeho entered the consultation room.

Creak.

“I’m here as requested.”

A man in his mid-forties sat in the small room.

Square jaw, sharp eyes. A calm aura filled the space.

He stood slowly, speaking politely.

“Thank you for your time. I’m Choi Jeonggu.”

“I’m Richard Choi.”

“Please, have a seat.”

He gestured to a chair.

A cool drink was ready on the desk.

They sat facing each other.

Choi Jeonggu spoke first.

“Have a drink first.”

“Isn’t this consultation time?”

“Just before surgery, taking a breather. A drink is fine, isn’t it?”

“Then I’ll take it.”

Daeho sipped lightly.

Choi Jeonggu’s gaze stayed on him.

“…”

Daeho put the drink down and cleared his throat.

Thump.

“Ahem. Sorry. I was curious about the hero of the emergency treatment last night.”

“Then you may continue observing.”

“Haha.”

“But speak freely. Your presence is a bit intimidating.”

Daeho responded boldly.

Choi Jeonggu smiled, clearly impressed.

“Haha, confident. Or should I say bold?”

“…”

“No offense. You’re fine. With that emergency treatment skill, you can be confident.”

Choi Jeonggu’s praise felt warm and genuine.

Daeho sensed this clearly in their short conversation.

He got straight to the point.

“Wasn’t the early discharge permission too soon?”

A direct question.

Choi Jeonggu’s expression wasn’t upset but curious.

“Too hasty? Why?”

“What do you mean?”

“If it’s just post-surgery, the timing is wrong.”

Daeho was a bit confused by the comment.

“Over ten pins in a major emergency surgery, wasn’t it?”

“You know well.”

“But you say the timing was wrong?”

Daeho looked for an answer.
