 Chapter 14

Meanwhile, a faint smile appeared on Professor Choi Jeonggu’s face.

“Dr. Richard, do you really need to ask me to get an answer?”

“……”

“Then, isn’t it strange that the emergency treatment only took 30 minutes?”

Suddenly, Professor Choi was the one questioning Daeho.

These weren’t questions meant to scold.

They carried the certainty that Daeho already knew the answer.

Daeho looked at him and spoke calmly.

“I’m glad my skills weren’t lacking in your eyes, Professor.”

“No. That’s wrong. Answer properly.”

“……”

“Silent, huh? Then let me rephrase. Who did you learn this from, and where?”

Thud-dong!

Professor Choi’s sharp gaze pierced Daeho.

At that moment, Daeho excused himself and stood up.

“Excuse me for a moment.”

“Hmm.”

Professor Choi stayed seated quietly.

Daeho walked toward a bookshelf.

It was messy, piled high with papers and clinical cases.

Among the clutter, one section was neatly organized.

Thin booklets were arranged in order.

  • CS Emergency Treatment (For Medical Staff) XX Year, January Issue

  • CS Emergency Treatment (For Medical Staff) XX Year, February Issue
     …

It was a case series published periodically by a globally recognized Korean surgical team over decades.

The cases weren’t limited to the ER.

They included mountains, seas, airplanes, deserts—every possible condition.

Daeho pulled one booklet and handed it to Professor Choi.

Slide.

“This case was very similar to the fifth case here.”

“Huh?”

Professor Choi raised his eyebrows and quickly flipped through the pages.

Flip-flap.

Soon, his eyes widened.

It was real.

“Wow.”

Out of countless casebooks, Daeho had picked exactly the right issue.

It would have been impossible without memorization.

Professor Choi, stunned, asked quickly.

“Do you… remember all the cases?”

“No way.”

“Ah, that makes sense. That would be impossible.”

Professor Choi calmed himself, answering carefully.

But the truth was known only to Daeho.

Once calm, Professor Choi’s admiration grew.

“I see. If you studied this, it makes sense.”

“I still have so much to improve.”

“Nonsense. I can clearly see how hard you’ve worked.”

“I’ll work even harder.”

Daeho bowed respectfully, sincerity in his tone.

Professor Choi’s expression grew warmer.

“Still, impressive. Pulling the exact issue like that.”

“It’s the bible for emergency diseases and emergency treatment.”

“Exactly. Even I often consult these for solutions.”

“……”

Daeho smiled quietly, just listening.

Professor Choi ran his hand over the CS Emergency Treatment booklet again.

“These are the people I respect with all my heart.”

“Truly remarkable people.”

“Especially Dr. Choi Taesoo. Maybe because we share the same surname, there’s a strange attraction.”

Professor Choi’s eyes sparkled.

Daeho answered awkwardly.

“Oh, I see.”

“By the way, Richard, you’re a Choi too. Which Choi family are you from?”

“Washington Choi?”

Daeho dodged the question vaguely.

Professor Choi, taking it as humor, laughed loudly.

Puhahaha. “Interesting. Well, it’s understandable not to know these days.”

“Should I find out?”

“No need. If you enjoy meeting them, they’re friends; if you dislike them, they’re family.”

Professor Choi’s face was full of a warm smile.

Then, suddenly, he handed Daeho his business card.

“From now on, if you face difficulties, don’t hesitate to contact me.”

“That’s meant in a good way, right?”

“Of course. You aspire to these people, and you seem like a junior of mine.”

Tap.

Professor Choi lightly tapped the CS Emergency Treatment booklet for emphasis.

The closeness was evident.

Daeho’s eyes brightened at the unexpected suggestion.

“If you consider me a junior, does that mean meals too?”

Hahaha. “Of course. Drinks as well, anytime.”

“Senior!”

Puhaha. “Just became your senior. Anyway, contact me if you need anything.”

Professor Choi concluded the meeting smoothly.

Back in the ER nurse station, Daeho approached Nurse Na Seonju with a gentle smile.

“I’m back.”

“Oh? You’re back. Professor Choi Jeonggu from Orthopedics was looking for you.”

“I just went to see him.”

Nurse Na Seonju asked curiously.

“How was it? He’s known for having a great personality in the hospital.”

“He seems like a good person.”

“Right?”

Her eyes sparkled.

Daeho muttered softly to himself.

“Yes. My judgment of people isn’t great, though.”

He intentionally spoke quietly.

Not catching it clearly, Nurse Na Seonju tilted her head.

“What did you say?”

“Nothing. By the way, did anyone else ask for me?”

Daeho smiled, changing the subject.

“No, no one did.”

“Really? Strange that no one’s looking for you.”

She tilted her head again.

Meanwhile, Daeho relaxed into an empty chair.

Plop.

“They’ll come if needed.”

“Huh? Uh… are you sure you can stay here?”

“The chair’s comfortable, so yes.”

“Oh… well then.”

Slide.

Nurse Na Seonju returned to her work, not sure what else to say.

Daeho settled comfortably, enjoying the calm.

“Ah, this hangover…”

Even though it was late afternoon, his stomach still felt rough.

Time passed slowly.

Yet, no one came to find Daeho.

He ate lunch alone.

“Ah, the soup’s helping my stomach.”

Slurp, slurp.

He even drank straight from the bowl.

All hospital staff watched him silently.

“……”

“……”

Some doctors didn’t look pleased.

Despite the stares, Daeho sat tall and did as he pleased.

‘What are you gonna do about it?’

His leisure continued into the afternoon.

Seated like he owned the place, he relaxed in the nurse station.

“This hospital really values loyalty.”

Tap-tap.

His toes nudged each other—no sign of anxiety.

Even the nurses worried about him.

“Dr. Richard, is it okay for him to be like this?”
“Shouldn’t he be worried if no one looks for him?”
“He’s too confident from the start.”
“Why is he so calm, even knowing the situation?”

The nurses glanced nervously.

Even they couldn’t approach him easily.

Daeho, however, fully understood the situation.

‘Being ignored is so comfortable.’

He enjoyed the calm completely.

There was a reason for his ease.

Not all emergency patients are the same, even if they complain of pain.

For example, a patient with a rear-head injury versus one with a deep arm wound.

Even if both bleed, they aren’t treated equally.

Emergency patients have levels:

  • Level 1: Resuscitation – immediate CPR needed, critical patient

  • Level 2: Emergent – severe trauma or life-threatening, urgent

  • Level 3: Urgent – general trauma or urgent care needed

  • Level 4: Less urgent – emergency but has some time

  • Level 5: Not urgent – pain only, non-urgent

Daeho acted according to these levels.

To move him? A patient had to be at least Level 3.

‘There are a lot of doctors here.’

He used other doctors to help.

Meanwhile, all arriving emergency patients remained in Daeho’s view.

So he could prepare nurses for upcoming orders.

Daeho’s work wasn’t visible directly.

But he knew the ER flow better than anyone.

At one moment.

Grunt.

The ER doors opened. Someone helped a patient inside.

“Help! Please save this person!”

“Ugh… ohh.”

Thud, thud.

The patient clutched their abdomen, barely able to walk.

The staff tensed immediately.

Nurses Lee Suyeon and Na Seonju sprang up.

“This way, patient!”
 “Guardian, register quickly!”

Vroom!

They moved the stretcher at top speed, handing off the patient efficiently.

Meanwhile, Daeho calmly looked through a medical journal.

Rustle-rustle.

Hands on the pages, eyes not following.

In a brief glance, Daeho’s mind worked rapidly.

‘Emergency Level 4. Less urgent.’

He assessed the patient instantly.

Calmly, he muttered:

“You should’ve come a bit earlier. The appendix must be swollen… hmm, this technique looks useful.”

Rustle.

He turned another page leisurely.

Then, Nurse Lee Suyeon ran in, shouting.

Tap-tap!

“IV, glucose, analgesics, antibiotics—orders!”

“I’ll prepare them!”

Nurse Oh Miseon dashed to the preparation room.

Meanwhile, Daeho turned a page and instructed Lee Suyeon.

“Contact GS, general surgery. Tell them an appendectomy patient has arrived.”

“Eh?”

“Peritonitis hasn’t set in yet, so there’s time. Still, better to hurry.”

Rustle.

He turned another page.

Lee Suyeon looked bewildered.

“What…?”

Before she could ask, Nurse Oh Miseon brought a tray.

“Here you go, nurse!”

“Th-thank you. Oh my.”

Tap.

Lee Suyeon rushed back to the patient, still puzzled.
