Chapter 211

211

The Gilliam Baronetcy, Southern Reigle Fief.

Great Lord Falador Reigle had been securing victory after victory in battles against the 2nd Division of the Demon King’s 1st Army Corps.

“Reporting the results of yesterday’s battle.”

“Hmm.”

Scanning the documents placed before him with a dignified air, Falador Reigle nodded as if satisfied.

The damage to the Gilliam residents and troops was minimal, whereas the casualties among the enemy demons numbered in the hundreds.

The enemy’s 2nd Division invading Gilliam was strong, but they were no match for Falador Reigle and the White Whale Knights.

While the Demon King’s army may have had the advantage in numbers by pushing the undead forward, the Gilliam Defense Force possessed two 8-star Paladins—asymmetrical powers that tipped the scales.

No matter how hard Vexas, the 2nd Division Commander, struggled, he could not withstand the pincer attack of Falador Reigle and the White Whale Knight Commander, Leorn.

“It seems the next battle will be the end of it,” said the vassal, Baron Gilliam.

“Victory is already certain. From here on, the key to future conflicts will be how many of the enemy we can pursue and eliminate.”

“Yes, yes. Sir Leorn and I will do our utmost. Hahahaha! Things couldn't be better.”

“It is all thanks to Your Excellency coming here in person.”

“Khahaha! Don’t flatter me so much. While it is true the tide of war changed upon my arrival, haven't you all held the line steadfastly until then?”

Standing up, he patted Baron Gilliam on the shoulder to encourage him, leaving the Baron flustered with gratitude.

Soon, the vassals began praising Falador with great joy, while Falador waved his hand as if the compliments were ticklish.

“Anyway, it seems things are going well at the capital, so you all should move out to prepare for the next battle.”

“Yes, Your Excellency!”

“Glory to Reigle!”

Looking around at his vassals who were chanting his name with hope, Falador Reigle laughed heartily.

It wasn't just them; whenever he stepped out of the manor, the residents of Gilliam would cheer his name and scatter flowers.

Everything was flowing smoothly according to his plan.

Originally, Falador Reigle intended to fight just enough to maintain his honor before retreating to plan for the future once defeat seemed certain.

However, Glenn Wordsworth changed everything.

Everything shifted when the man recognized as the Third Saint appeared in Reigle. With the arrival of a 9-star Paladin, the doomed battle's dynamics were warped, and Falador Reigle quickly calculated a way to use him.

He would have the Saint hold back the 9-star Magic Swordsman while he toured the surrounding territories.

It was a perfect plan to protect the Reigle capital while winning the hearts of the people in the outskirts.

'God is giving me an opportunity.'

But Falador did not dismiss this as mere luck.

While some simply rejoice when an opportunity falls into their lap, is it not the mark of a superior player to seize that chance tenaciously and create even more opportunities from it?

'Only a fool waits for the next stroke of luck.'

Though the Saint had fallen into his hands by chance, Falador had no intention of letting him go.

He planned to thoroughly exploit the Saint's abilities, his status, and even that self-sacrificing, devoted personality typical of his kind.

He was different from the Pope, who sat in the Papal Palace like a puppet, or the Saintess, who was too incompetent to be of any use.

'To do that, I must first win a great victory in the upcoming battle against the Demon King’s army.'

It was just as he thought this.

The door to the conference room burst open, and a knight rushed in, kneeling before him.

“Urgent news!”

“What is it?”

“At dawn today! The enemy forces secretly withdrew from their camp!”

At the sudden report, doubt flickered in the eyes of Falador and the commanders.

“What?”

“What does that...!”

“Why would those who were preparing for a total war just yesterday retreat now?”

“That is... the scouts are currently investigating the cause...”

“Sir Leorn!”

Falador’s voice rang out through the confused murmurs of the vassals.

Being quick to judge a situation, he knew exactly what needed to be done.

“Organize a pursuit party immediately.”

“Yes, Your Excellency!”

As Leorn, the White Whale Knight Commander, strode out of the room, the other vassals followed suit, barking orders at their adjutants.

After the whirlwind subsided, Baron Gilliam frowned.

“I don't understand. Even if the tide turned, why so suddenly...?”

It was certainly strange behavior.

Though they had suffered repeated defeats against the Gilliam forces joined by Falador, the demons' momentum hadn't broken. According to reports, hadn't they been preparing for an all-out war just yesterday, aiming for a final reversal?

Falador Reigle crossed his arms, lost in thought.

Soon, the mystery was solved by a messenger rushing into the room.

“Your Excellency! Urgent news from the Reigle capital! The Commander of the Demon King’s 1st Army Corps has been defeated in battle against the Saint!”

“Hmm? That is good ne—wait, what?!”

Falador, who had been preoccupied, suddenly bolted upright.

“W-what did you just say?!”

“It is as I reported! Two days ago, the main body of the legion raided the capital, and the Saint was victorious in that battle!”

Falador slumped back into his seat, looking as if he had been struck on the back of the head with a hammer.

“This... how...”

“Your Excellency! Reigle is now safe from the enemy! It seems the 2nd Division retreated because of that!”

He couldn't even spare a glance for Baron Gilliam, who was cheering tactlessly. Falador covered his face with his hands to hide his wide, trembling eyes.

'How on earth?!'

He had brought the main fighting force, including the White Whale Knights, with him. With the strength remaining at the Reigle capital, they should have barely been able to withstand a raid, let alone counterattack. He had calculated the distribution of power so meticulously!

And yet, Glenn Wordsworth had overturned everything and emerged victorious.

'This is bad! At this rate, it looks like I stepped aside on purpose just to boost his achievements!'

Glenn Wordsworth's victory.

Neither the Lord Falador Reigle nor the White Whale Knights were there. Therefore, the honor and praise garnered from the victory would belong solely to him. Falador Reigle might be hailed as a hero for saving the Gilliam Barony, but he had lost his chance to shine at the most important place: the Reigle capital.

—Saint! Please look this way just once!

—Ah... Lord Saint!

Falador vividly remembered the faces of the capital's citizens welcoming him with open arms on the day of the first counterattack. Those people, who had once loved their Lord for his benevolent rule more than the gods of the Order, would return to the embrace of the gods because of this event.

“Ah...”

He could envision the future where the perfect Kingdom of Reigle, built over generations, slowly crumbled and fell into the hands of the Order. Imagining a future so far removed from what he had envisioned, Falador Reigle’s face was soaked in a sense of defeat.

He had won a great battle, but the House of Reigle had lost.

Two days passed.

The atmosphere of victory, once hot with cheers of joy and tears, had calmed down to some extent. The number of people shouting the Third Saint's name toward the masterless Reigle manor had dwindled from hundreds to dozens.

Still, whenever he couldn't stand the stuffiness and snuck out into the city, hearing children singing songs with his name in them made his skin crawl with embarrassment.

'This is a bit... much.'

In the fief where the owner had run away, Glenn had become a hero. Of course, having endured a long time of contempt and mockery, such praise didn't feel bad, but having songs written about your name was, well... it made him feel like his hands and feet were going to curl up and explode.

He felt a newfound respect for celebrities who dealt with the creative "simping" of fans in comment sections.

As if the word "idol" truly meant a "deity," Glenn felt a certain sense of dread watching himself become deified in real-time. It was a complicated feeling, seeing them worship the Saint instead of the god they were supposed to serve.

Of course, there were other discomforts besides the burdensome praise.

“This old man wishes to confess a great sin to the Saint.”

Zeren Folkas.

A vassal who had served multiple generations of Reigles for decades, he suddenly sought Glenn out, bowing his head in repentance for his lack of faith. To be honest, regardless of his inner thoughts, he had followed Glenn’s orders well enough, so there was no real need for forgiveness.

Yet, because he insisted on atoning, Glenn brushed him off with a vague comment about how the Lord would watch over the rest of his life.

“I don’t know how much time I have left, but I will not spend it in vain. Thank you truly.”

Glenn felt keenly that being the target of so many people's expectations and praise wasn't exactly pleasant. He thought it might be better to disappear and live quietly somewhere once everything was over.

'......But what happens when it’s over?'

Thinking about it now, the concept of an "ending" had become quite blurry since the game became reality. If asked if there was a clear goal, Mors, who was supposed to be the final boss in the original work, had moved into an ambiguous position.

'And it feels weird to consider the end of my life as the "ending."'

Whenever he thought like this, a clear answer never came.

“It just makes me feel strange for no reason...”

So, as he always did, he shoved the question into a corner of his mind and focused on the present. Even if the concept of an ending was vague, it wasn't as if he lacked a goal.

He had to defeat the current Demon King, Lupellos van Sausreze, and the 2nd Division Commander, Kacherto Rienge, and then deal with the upcoming intervention of the gods.

'And as long as there are still plenty of guys stronger than me, I don’t have the leisure to think about anything else.'

He would simply plan and execute his next growth step by step, just as he always had.

“In that sense, it’s unboxing time.”

[You have overcome a Lunatic element.]

[A special reward is being granted.]

Was this the first one since the total war with the Black Order? A smirk naturally tugged at the corners of his mouth at the long-awaited reward.

By the way...

[All stats increase by 2.]

[Lunatic Special Reward]

[Perk: The Tenth Trial and its Conquest]

§ To you, who have overcome a total of ten trials, we grant a very special opportunity to take one reward from those that were previously unselected.

“I didn't expect this.”

Excluding cases where he obtained the Gray Ring or Holy Power clues, Lunatic rewards usually functioned by letting the player choose one of three options: a Player Authority, an Artifact of Narrative grade or higher, or a Unique Potential. Naturally, the other two options would be discarded. This tenth reward seemed to let him pick one of those discarded options.

There were definitely rewards he had passed up with tears in his eyes, but he couldn't remember them all. Fortunately, the system message was kindly listing the rewards Glenn had given up.

“Let’s see...”

[1. The Wolf That Devoured Spirits]

  • § Player Authority

  • § Artifact (Narrative grade or higher)

[2. Knight Robert Gentrix]

  • § Player Authority

  • § Artifact (Narrative grade or higher)

[4. Ancient Rune Golem]

  • § Indomitable Rider

  • § Rossini’s Ring

[5. The Cyan Knight Perenold]

  • § Lunatic Map Chart

  • § Staff of Purgation

[6. Penelope Ogma]

  • § Watcher’s Eye

  • § Duelist’s Blood

[7. The Black Order’s Countermeasure]

  • § Wind of Resurgence

  • § Shield of Segmillo

[9. Lion of Kalungod?]

  • § Lunatic Map Chart

  • § Elaine’s Staff

There were 18 choices in total. Looking at it like this, he realized he had overcome quite a few Lunatic trials. Glenn let out a small laugh as the memories of those "dog-like" frustrations resurfaced in his mind.

“It’s like a Hall of Fame.”

Interestingly, the first and second rewards—which had been hidden gambles back then—were now revealed on the list.

'Well, no need to gamble now.'

Even without those two, there were plenty of worthy rewards. First, he narrowed down the options by cutting out the relatively disappointing ones.

  • § Rossini’s Ring

  • § Duelist’s Blood

  • § Lunatic Map Chart

  • § Watcher’s Eye

“It’s down to these...”

He was torn in many ways. To recap briefly: Rossini’s Ring was an anti-assassin artifact that detected minute presence and power. Duelist’s Blood was a Unique Potential that boosted stats by a staggering 15% when entering battle. Watcher’s Eye was a Player Authority that allowed him to check the opponent's status window. And as for the Lunatic Map Chart... he didn't know.

Since they all provided exceptional effects in different fields, the choice was difficult. If you wondered why he included the Lunatic Map Chart, it was because it had appeared as a reward candidate twice.

'Besides, anything with "Lunatic" attached to it has never been bad.'

In the silence, Glenn stared intently at the four items.

“Ah... this is hard. Should I just spin the gacha?”

He briefly considered picking the random first or second Lunatic rewards just to end the agonizing deliberation. Of course, he didn't actually do that; instead, he began to seriously contemplate his future plans and the situations he would face.

'What do I need most to prepare for the final battle with Demon King Lupellos and the imminent intervention of the gods?'

He carefully weighed the enemies that would appear and the circumstances he would have to fight in.

After about twenty minutes, Glenn made his choice from among the four.
