Chapter 8: I’m So Poor, I’ve Made You Suffer (2/2)
She raised her head to look at the man’s back in front of her. “What did you say?”
Chu Jinhan turned around, looking straight into her eyes. “I’m so poor, and I have a bunch of enemies waiting for me. Yet you’re still willing to stick by my side. I’ve made you suffer.”
Song Yunfei looked at his dead-serious expression, noticing a faint trace of wounded pride deep within his eyes.
Her hands involuntarily trembled, and her little heart trembled right along with them.
Big Boss, you’re not poor at all! You’re the absolute President of Yanjin Group—how could you possibly be poor?!
Of course, she didn't dare say that out loud. The second she uttered those words, her death sentence wouldn't be far off.
Song Yunfei forced a reassuring smile onto her face. “I’m not suffering at all. Our poverty is only temporary; we’ll have everything we want in the future. I believe in you.”
“Is that true?”
Song Yunfei nodded like a chicken pecking at grain. “Of course it’s true! You studied abroad! Once the dust settles, you can just find a top-tier corporation. With your talents, wouldn't a seven-figure annual salary be child's play for you?!”
Chu Jinhan’s eyes locked onto her with burning intensity, almost as if he were trying to see right through her soul.
Just as Song Yunfei was feeling her scalp go numb under his gaze, he spoke up slowly: “I don't even remember what major I studied.”
Song Yunfei balled her fists, pumping them to cheer him on and boost his confidence: “None of that matters! You only lost your memories, but your skills and talents are still there. If I say you can do it, you can do it!”
Chu Jinhan didn't say another word. Withdrawing his gaze, he turned back around and continued pushing the electric scooter forward.
Song Yunfei secretly let out a long sigh of relief.
Parked along the roadside on the opposite side of the street was a low-profile Mercedes-Benz.
Seated inside the car was a woman dressed in an elegant black dress. Her long, curly hair cascaded behind her back, her face striking and beautiful, paired with an icy, captivating presence.
Through the tinted car window, her eyes quietly observed the two people pushing the electric scooter across the street.
In the driver’s seat sat another woman, someone with slightly bolder, sharper features carrying a hint of heroic spirit.
“That bastard is actually really here. Nan-nan, do you want to grab him and drag him back?”
The woman named Nan-nan watched the two walk further into the distance. Withdrawing her gaze, she spoke up slowly, her voice flat and devoid of emotion: “No need. Since he loves living this kind of ordinary life so much, let him stay here.”
As she spoke, her fingers clenched tightly, a flicker of deep hatred flashing in her eyes.
Chu Jinhan, I’d love to see whether you’ll still be as happy as you are now once you find out this woman’s true colors.
By the time they hauled everything back up into the apartment, Song Yunfei collapsed onto the sofa in total exhaustion.
In this blistering summer heat, walking two whole kilometers had left her completely drenched in sweat.
She looked ahead at the busy figure assembling the mini-refrigerator. Chu Jinhan was equally drenched from the heat, the entire back of his shirt soaked through with sweat. As he bent over, Song Yunfei could clearly see the silhouette of his skin pressed against the thin fabric of his shirt.
Before long, the refrigerator was plugged in and running smoothly.
Song Yunfei hurried over to stand in front of the fridge, stroking its surface as she let out a heartfelt sigh: “This is fantastic! Now we don't have to worry about cooked meals going bad overnight.”
Chu Jinhan glanced sideways at her.
Seeing her looking so genuinely overjoyed over a mere mini-refrigerator made his expression grow even more complex.
However, a strange feeling had been lingering in his heart all along.
Even though he was so poor right now, things like these still didn't feel particularly precious or grand in his mind. Even when he heard people talk about hundreds of thousands or millions of yuan, his heart remained completely still, without the slightest ripple of excitement—almost as if he had once possessed all of it before.
Sometimes, Chu Jinhan even caught himself wondering: Was he truly just an overly ambitious dreamer? Just like the kind of person mocked on the internet—someone with not a single dime in their pocket, yet looking down on a million yuan as petty change.
Noticing that his mood seemed somewhat down, Song Yunfei couldn't help asking, “What’s wrong?”
Chu Jinhan looked at her, then suddenly asked, “If I stay this poor forever, will you still stay with me?”
Song Yunfei froze on the spot. Uh oh, this guy really got triggered by that woman earlier and is starting to doubt his entire existence.
She cleared her throat softly, raised her hand, and patted the man’s shoulder reassuringly. “Don't overthink it! Didn't I tell you already? You’re definitely going to make it big!”
Chu Jinhan’s eyes remained sharp and intense, his expression exceptionally grave. It was obvious that Song Yunfei’s vague answer hadn't satisfied him in the slightest.
The light smile on Song Yunfei’s lips slowly faded away.
A sudden, scary thought flashed through her mind: If I act like I despise him for being poor, would he just take the opportunity to bring up a breakup?
