Chapter 8: I’m So Poor, I’ve Made You Suffer (1/2)
Chu Jinhan stared at her for a good while before swinging his long leg over and sitting down on the electric scooter.
Twisting the throttle, the scooter slowly glided forward.
The unique way the two of them were riding naturally drew curious stares from quite a few pedestrians along the road.
As thick-skinned as Song Yunfei could be, even she couldn't quite withstand being ogled by so many people. She silently covered her face with her hands so no one could recognize her features.
Chu Jinhan glanced down at her from time to time, though all he could see was the pale, delicate skin of her upper neck, a few stray strands of hair clinging to her skin, and a fine layer of sweat.
While waiting at an intersection for the red light to change, Song Yunfei felt warm breath puffing against her ear.
Thinking someone was trying to harass her, she turned her head—only to find herself staring straight into the eyes of a Samoyed.
The dog was sticking out its tongue and wagging its tail at her, almost as if it had recognized her as one of its own species.
This dog was perched right on the front deck of another person's electric scooter, sitting in the exact same position as her, and even the color of their scooters was nearly identical.
Song Yunfei’s lips twitched wildly.
Taking advantage of the owner’s distraction, she reached out her hand and patted the dog's soft head. The dog enthusiastically leaned forward to lick her face.
Instinctively, Song Yunfei tilted her head back to dodge—only to bump right into the front edge of Chu Jinhan’s seat, and right into his knee as well.
With a darkened face, Chu Jinhan reached out his hand, pressing his palm firmly against the back of her head. “Stop moving around.”
Song Yunfei turned her head to look up at him, noticing the displeased look written across his face.
She quietly pulled her gaze back, crouching obediently without paying any further attention to the Samoyed.
“Little Song?”
A voice called out from her left. Song Yunfei followed the sound and turned her head to look over.
It was a woman sitting in the passenger seat of a BMW. She looked vaguely familiar, though Song Yunfei couldn't quite place her identity right away.
Song Yunfei offered a vague, polite greeting: “Oh, it’s you.”
“It really is you!”
The woman appeared to be in her late twenties, reasonably attractive, and dressed in sharp professional business attire.
She looked down at Song Yunfei from her elevated position with a condescending gaze before quickly redirecting her eyes toward Chu Jinhan sitting behind her.
A smile played at the corners of her mouth, though her eyes were filled with an unreadable mixture of mocking arrogance.
“Is this your boyfriend?”
Song Yunfei could easily decipher the meaning behind that look—a sense of superiority mixed with sheer contempt.
It was as if she were saying: So what if he’s handsome? He’s still riding a beat-up electric scooter. You’re still too young—when looking for a man, you have to pick someone rich. Good looks won't put food on the table.
Even though the boyfriend sitting next to her was barely five feet three inches tall, weighed two hundred pounds, and looked like a catfish, he was driving a brand-new BMW.
Song Yunfei didn't care about the woman’s judgmental gaze in the slightest. She gave a firm nod and admitted candidly, “Mm, yes.”
“Is he a food delivery driver?”
“Part-time.”
Song Yunfei answered so straightforwardly and honestly that the woman failed to see the insecurity she had hoped for, causing her interest to fizzle out quickly.
“I see.”
Chu Jinhan, however, took every word to heart. He sat in total silence atop the scooter.
The woman sitting inside the luxurious BMW boasting her life formed a stark, painful contrast with Song Yunfei curled up at his feet. His fingers gripping the scooter handlebars involuntarily tightened.
Before long, the traffic light turned green, and the vehicles slowly drove off.
That was the great thing about small cities—electric scooters weren't banned, leaving cars and scooters weaving back and forth together.
The battery on this old electric scooter was already dying, having gone uncharged for two whole days. With two kilometers left before reaching their destination, the scooter stalled dead right in the middle of the road.
Both of them stepped off, looking at the broken-down scooter before exchanging a helpless glance.
Song Yunfei shrugged her shoulders. “Guess there’s no other choice—let’s push it back.”
Chu Jinhan walked in front steering while Song Yunfei pushed from behind. Within two minutes, she was drenched in sweat from the blistering heat.
“I’ve made you suffer.”
The man walking ahead blurted out this sentence completely out of nowhere, making Song Yunfei wonder if she was hallucinating.
