Chapter 7

Chapter 4: A Conscious Man (2/2)

Stir-frying was done over a portable gas canister, relying entirely on the window and a washbasin-sized exhaust fan on the wall to vent out the grease and smoke.

Surprisingly, both the window and the exhaust fan were spotless, without a trace of caked-on grease.

This was entirely Chu Jinhan’s doing—every single time he finished cooking, he would wipe them down thoroughly. Even as she was now, Song Yunfei knew she couldn't bring herself to scrub all that down every single day.

Did this guy have obsessive-compulsive disorder or something?

Song Yunfei shook her head, pulled her gaze back, and unpacked the groceries to start washing and prepping.

Looking at her fuzzy outline through the frosted glass door, Chu Jinhan’s expression grew even more suspicious.

Before long, Song Yunfei walked out holding the dishes.

Three dishes and a soup: shredded pork with green peppers, stir-fried cucumber with ham, hot and sour potato strips, and a bowl of tomato egg drop soup. While it wasn't a extravagant feast, it looked intensely appetizing.

Song Yunfei pulled out two tissue sheets to wipe the sweat off her face, then turned to Chu Jinhan. “Come eat! I think you’ll still have plenty of time to deliver food after eating.”

According to her memories, the original host could cook, though she only knew a few simple home-style dishes. Since she was only making basic home-cooked food right now, it shouldn't expose her, right?

Song Yunfei was still terrified of revealing that she wasn't the original host.

Chu Jinhan had no real affection for the original host to begin with—only guilt. If he ever discovered she was an imposter, even that faint thread of guilt would vanish. If he simply walked away, that would be a best-case scenario; her real fear was that he might hand her over to be sliced up in a research lab to avenge the original host.

Even worse, if he left and recovered his memories early, he might send her straight to prison. After being scammed so terribly, he wouldn't care who she actually was—so long as he got his revenge.

Chu Jinhan remained silent for a short moment, then picked up his bowl and chopsticks.

Song Yunfei picked up her own chopsticks and dug in. Having run around all afternoon, she was practically starving.

She had submitted her resume in the morning, only to get a call for an interview that very afternoon—which was where she had been all day.

Remembering this, she looked up at Chu Jinhan again. “Oh, right. I found a job this afternoon, so I’m starting work tomorrow.”

Chu Jinhan froze again, shooting her a startled glance. “Why the sudden urge to work?”

“It’s too boring staying at home all day,” Song Yunfei replied. “All I do is eat and sleep, sleep and eat. Look, I’ve even gained weight.”

She straightened her back and patted her belly.

Chu Jinhan lowered his eyes to peek at her stomach, but his gaze unconsciously drifted down to her sleek, pale legs.

Now that she had cleaned herself up, that grimy, unkempt vibe from before had vanished without a trace.

Taking only a brief glance, Chu Jinhan offered a casual dismissive response: “You’re not fat.”

Seeing his superficial reaction, Song Yunfei suddenly remembered something from her memories.

When the original host had asked him if she had gained weight, he had answered honestly—only for her to instantly fly into a rage, accusing him of finding her repulsive.

Song Yunfei let out a quiet sigh and continued eating.

After a short while, she couldn't help asking, “How does my cooking taste?”

“It’s good,” Chu Jinhan replied.

Still that completely perfunctory tone. Song Yunfei shut her mouth, deciding not to embarrass herself any further.

He’s so cold. No wonder the original host’s need for control got worse and worse.

Living every day in constant terror—worrying on one hand that someone outside would steal him away, and fearing on the other that he would regain his memories—it was a miracle she hadn't gone completely insane already.

Of course, she had brought it entirely on herself. None of this would have happened if she hadn't tricked him into coming here in the first place.

After finishing the meal, Chu Jinhan took the initiative to clear the table and wash the dishes.

Song Yunfei clicked her tongue in awe. Just look at the man's self-awareness, then look back at the original Song Yunfei...

Honestly, even a dog would shake its head in disapproval.
