Chapter 4

You Just Went Through a Battle...

Su Tu stopped running.

At this moment, sweat was pouring down his body and he was panting heavily. He raised his sports bottle and drank all the water inside in one go.

Right on time, the system notifications appeared.

You completed an exhilarating run.

Body Strengthening Proficiency +15

Body Strengthening (Beginner): 175/300

Su Tu sat down on a nearby bench and slowly caught his breath.

The corner of his mouth rose slightly.

There was an indescribable sense of accomplishment that came from seeing his improvement with his own eyes.

Phew... at this rate, it won't take many days for Body Strengthening to reach Intermediate.

Proficiency increased very quickly while a skill was at Beginner level.

But once it reached Intermediate, it would probably become as slow as Spiritual Wisdom, crawling forward like a turtle.

The improvement to Su Tu's body wasn't particularly obvious this time.

It was nowhere near as noticeable as when he had gained fifty Body Strengthening proficiency points at once.

Even so, he clearly knew that his body had become stronger.

The improvements granted by his skills took effect immediately.

Every increase in proficiency made him stronger.

Su Tu began thinking while recovering.

Running for an entire hour only gives fifteen proficiency points.

But throwing just a few straight punches earlier gave me ten...

Leaving aside the additional proficiency he received from participating in an organized activity, martial arts clearly improved Body Strengthening much faster than ordinary exercise.

Su Tu suddenly remembered the business card Lin Feiyang had accidentally dropped earlier.

Maybe martial arts are the fastest way to improve Body Strengthening.

Moonstep Martial Arts Hall... I'll go take a look when I get a few days off.

While thinking, Su Tu happened to notice something on the ground not far away.

A white makeup bag was lying there.

Who dropped their bag?

He stood up.

Good thing they ran into a kind person like me. Otherwise, they might never get it back.

Su Tu walked over and picked up the makeup bag.

He also gathered the cosmetics scattered around it and placed them back inside.

There was a Public Security Office downstairs from his apartment complex.

He could simply hand the bag over on his way home.

Su Tu didn't mind doing a small good deed like this.

He could treat it as accumulating some good karma.

However...

The instant Su Tu picked up the makeup bag, his entire body suddenly stiffened.

Thump!

Thump!

Thump!

His heartbeat, which had already calmed down, suddenly became violently intense again.

Su Tu could clearly feel it.

Someone...

No.

Something was staring at him.

That gaze was filled with terrifying malice.

Greedy.

Evil.

Filled with the most primitive kind of desire.

It felt like countless cold, wet tentacles were reaching toward him from every direction.

The surroundings became deathly silent.

Rustle... rustle...

Faint sounds entered Su Tu's ears.

Ever since Spiritual Wisdom reached Intermediate, his intuition had become incredibly sharp.

At this moment, he was almost certain.

Something terrifying was hiding in the darkness and watching him.

Su Tu's fists unconsciously tightened.

Every muscle in his body became fully engaged.

If anything happened, he would be able to counterattack immediately.

After acquiring Combat, his flexibility, combat awareness, and ability to coordinate his muscles had all improved greatly.

A cold light appeared in the young man's eyes.

He slowly bent down and picked up the bag, pretending to act casually.

But his eyes rapidly scanned every corner of the surroundings.

This was the entrance to an old residential complex.

The worn-out security booth was empty.

The nearby surveillance cameras had long since become homes for spiders.

There was almost nowhere nearby where a person could hide.

And yet...

That feeling of being watched refused to disappear.

Gulp...

A sound suddenly appeared.

It sounded like something swallowing its saliva.

The noise was thick and filthy.

At the same moment, an indescribable wet and slimy sensation seemed to spread through the entire area.

Su Tu exploded into action.

He clenched one fist and entered the stance of the only punching technique he knew.

The straight punch.

This time, he held nothing back.

He didn't even look in the direction he was punching.

His intuition guided him.

Something deep inside him screamed at him to strike forward.

So he did.

His fist shot straight ahead!

BOOM!!!

The punch actually produced an explosive crack in the air.

This was the first time since unlocking Combat that Su Tu had thrown a straight punch with such seriousness.

With absolutely everything he had.

Every muscle in his body exerted force at once.

Su Tu resembled a beast that had finally broken free of its chains.

His fist roared forward with terrifying force!

Straight toward the shadow beneath a nearby streetlight.

But...

There was nothing there.

His punch hit empty air.

At the same moment, the strange feeling of being watched disappeared completely.

Nothing happened.

There was nothing around him.

It was as though everything he had just experienced had been nothing more than his imagination.

Completed an all-out Straight Punch.

Combat Proficiency +10

Body Strengthening Proficiency +5

Combat (Beginner): 110/300

Body Strengthening (Beginner): 180/300

A faint night breeze passed by.

The streetlight swayed gently.

Everything looked completely ordinary.

Just the entrance to an old residential complex.

Su Tu slowly loosened his fist.

Was I just too nervous?

He thought about it.

Martial arts possibly being added to the Gaokao is a huge matter.

Maybe I've been too anxious about it, and the atmosphere around here made me imagine something frightening.

Su Tu lowered his gaze.

Just as he was thinking...

BEEP! BEEP!

A sharp vehicle horn suddenly sounded behind him.

Immediately afterward, dazzling lights flooded over him.

Su Tu turned around and raised a hand to shield his eyes.

A black new-energy hovercar had stopped nearby with its high beams shining directly at him.

Then a teasing voice entered his ears.

Little Su Tu, it really is you!

What are you doing wandering around here in the middle of the night instead of sleeping?

Don't tell me you've started dating!

If you have, I'm definitely telling your aunt!

A curvy figure leaned halfway out of the car.

Her figure was extremely striking.

Her curves were exaggerated enough to put certain adult-film actresses to shame.

Her delicate face was beautiful even without makeup.

She wore a small camisole that exposed half of one shoulder.

Su Tu recognized her immediately.

Sister Zhang?

The woman stepped out of the car and rolled her seductive fox-like eyes at him.

What do you mean, Sister Zhang?

Call me Big Sis!

You're making me sound old. Anyone listening would think I'm seventy or eighty!

She wore black shorts and black stockings with red trim, making her already fair legs look even more eye-catching.

Her full name was Zhang Meng.

She lived in the same apartment building as Su Tu and had been best friends with Su Tu's aunt since childhood.

Technically, she was from the same generation as his aunt.

But Zhang Meng stubbornly insisted that Su Tu call her Big Sis.

Her favorite hobby was teasing him.

Su Tu looked at her.

Sister Zhang, what are you doing here?

I just finished a class reunion and happened to pass by.

Zhang Meng crossed her arms and looked at him like an interrogator.

I should be asking you that. What are you doing here?

She narrowed her eyes.

Don't tell me you really are dating someone?

Su Tu shook his head.

I came out for a night run before sleeping. Just exercising.

Zhang Meng looked at him with surprise.

Then she walked closer and squeezed his arm.

Her expression immediately changed.

Whoa, Little Su Tu.

You look so skinny, but you've actually got quite a bit of muscle.

Feeling the firmness of Su Tu's arm, Zhang Meng exaggeratedly opened her mouth in surprise.

Good grades and a good body too?

If I were in the same class as you, I'd have taken you down already!

Su Tu had long since become used to Zhang Meng's teasing.

Ever since their first meeting, she had never stopped messing with him.

And as Su Tu had grown older and increasingly handsome, her teasing had only become worse.

Su Tu put on a completely serious expression.

Women only slow down the speed at which I draw my blade.

Hearing this, Zhang Meng immediately straightened her body.

As though deliberately showing off her figure, she pushed her chest forward.

What do you know about women?

Her lips curled into a playful smile.

How about you come to my place tonight?

Big Sis can teach you what 'drawing your blade' really means.

Su Tu immediately coughed.

Ahem... absolutely unnecessary.

Zhang Meng burst out laughing.

Hahaha! Fine, fine. I won't tease you anymore.

Come on, get in. I'm heading home anyway.

By now, the strange sense of danger from earlier had completely disappeared.

After what had happened, Su Tu had also lost the desire to continue exercising.

So he got into Zhang Meng's car.

The hovercar's engine roared.

A moment later, it sped away.

Inside the car, Su Tu was clearly distracted.

Everything that had happened earlier replayed in his mind.

He lowered his eyes and looked at the makeup bag in his hands.

Was it really just my imagination?

At that exact moment...

A system notification suddenly appeared before his eyes.

You just went through a battle.

Combat Proficiency +50

Body Strengthening Proficiency +50

Body Strengthening (Beginner): 230/300

Combat (Beginner): 160/300

Su Tu stared at the system panel.

His dark eyes slowly narrowed.

It hadn't been an illusion.

Back at the entrance of the old residential complex...

The shadows beneath the dim streetlights suddenly moved.

Something slowly crawled out from beneath the ground.

It was a tall figure.

The creature tilted its head and stared in the direction Su Tu had left.

The greed in its eyes was almost tangible.

Damn hairless monkey...

Its voice was filled with hatred.

And on its chest...

There was now a massive depression.

A huge fist mark had been deeply imprinted into its body.

Brown blood slowly leaked from the wound.
