Chapter 42

At that moment,

Daeho was closely watching Kang Jinsu.

Whoosh!

No words were needed.

With just a glance, he indicated where Jinsu needed to go.

At the end of that gaze stood Seo Juran, reaching out her hand.

“Jinsu, over here!”

“Yes, senior!”

Clack!

“Okay. Adding more lidocaine!”

Seo Juran quickly added the syringe into the IV like passing a baton.

In that brief moment, nurse Lee Suyeon arrived.

Clack!

“Richard, sir!”

“Start with the cardiac stimulant first!”

“Just five seconds!”

Clatter.

Nurse Lee Suyeon searched for the syringe and medicine without a moment to catch her breath.

Daeho, seemingly unwilling to waste a single second, gave orders to the residents.

“Seo Juran, Kang Jinsu. Connect a drain to the abdomen!”

“We…?”

“Can’t do it?”

Grrr.

The moment they expressed hesitation, Daeho’s aura turned fierce.

Both Seo Juran and Kang Jinsu felt it immediately.

‘If we make a mistake… we die.’

It was like standing naked in front of a lion.

They instinctively knew that any excuse or explanation was useless.

Following the order was the only way to survive.

Intimidated by Daeho’s predator-like intensity, they quickly responded.

“We can do it!”

“Then why are you just standing there?”

“Y-Yes, we will!”

Clack.

Seo Juran and Kang Jinsu moved frantically.

Yet their gestures were clumsy, hesitant.

“The… the needle first…?”

“How long should the catheter be…?”

Panicking, they glanced at each other and fumbled while sharing opinions.

They had learned the procedures, but had little practical experience.

Now, under sudden orders, they were overwhelmed by the gap between theory and practice.

As they hesitated, they could almost feel the predator breathing behind them.

Grrr.

“Is that so hard?”

Instantly, goosebumps ran over Seo Juran and Kang Jinsu’s bodies.

Swish.

“Huh!”

“Ugh!”

Daeho was technically on the opposite side of the bed.

But his presence felt like a ferocious mouth snapping right behind them.

One wrong move, and they could die.

For them, this moment wasn’t just emergency care anymore.

It was a matter of survival.

This was hell.

Welcome to hell.

They felt the life-threatening intensity of the moment with every fiber of their being.

They had to focus.

That desperate will to survive triggered all their knowledge and skills at once.

“Haha, we can do it!”

“Starting now. We… we start!”

With the shout, both Seo Juran and Kang Jinsu’s hands moved rapidly.

Click, clack.

“Jinsu, the catheter length is… okay…”

“The catheter length… done. Senior Seo, here!”

Under pressure, with life hanging by a thread, they moved almost instinctively.

Yet, surprisingly, connecting the drain went smoothly.

At the same time, Daeho took his eyes off Seo Juran and Kang Jinsu.

‘Pretending to struggle.’

He hadn’t given orders blindly.

He was confident that the procedures they could perform were within their abilities.

Watching them so far had not been pointless.

It was to gauge their capabilities.

They hesitated because they had been limited by their usual constraints and lacked self-confidence.

‘I’ll break that framework.’

Daeho quietly resolved.

Yet breaking the framework wasn’t instant.

It required experience and time.

For now, Daeho had to control everything himself.

So, he began emergency treatment.

“Nurse, let’s start with the hemothorax.”

“Y-Yes… with just the two of us?”

“The right lung. The wound caused by the broken rib is the main issue.”

“B-But…?”

Nurse Lee Suyeon stammered, unsure why he was speaking to her.

Daeho ignored her and continued.

“If we push aside the broken rib and compress the pulmonary artery to reduce blood flow, the bleeding may stop.”

“Y-You’re going to do that… here… alone?”

“I’ve already started.”

Daeho’s hands were already gloved and soaked in disinfectant.

Before anyone could react, he cut the right side of the chest with a scalpel.

Ssssh.

“Grrk, ugh!”

The patient groaned, but thanks to the painkiller, didn’t twist his body.

Blood pooled out from the cut skin.

Drip, drip!

Nurse Lee Suyeon’s eyes widened in shock.

“T-Then what do I do? I’m not ready!”

“Be ready. I’ll handle the procedure.”

Slip, swish.

Daeho’s hands went inside the opened skin, moving with precision.

Everyone watching, including nurse Lee Suyeon, was utterly shocked.

“Ahhh!”

“Ha… aaah.”

“This… this is…”

The patient was awake and conscious.

“Ugh… ugh…”

The patient writhed in real time with Daeho’s movements.

Yet Daeho seemed unfazed.

“Hmm? Here… and then…”

He mumbled calmly while moving his hands.

Each movement caused fresh bleeding from the incision.

The medical staff couldn’t look away.

In the midst of this, Daeho extended a hand to nurse Lee Suyeon.

“Could I have a mosquito clamp?”

“H-Here it is.”

“And the hemostat?”

“Here.”

Click, click.

With a stunned expression, Lee Suyeon handed over the instruments.

Daeho continued the treatment without missing a beat.

“Thank you. Now, continuing…”

His hands moved inside the patient’s body, shocking everyone.

Yet something miraculous happened.

The ECG began to stabilize.

-Beep, beep, beep-

Lee Taekyung, watching the ECG, exclaimed in surprise.

“The pulse… it’s… better. Blood pressure… wow, unbelievable.”

The real-time emergency procedure and ECG improvement seemed almost impossible to reconcile.

After a while, the patient exhaled and looked calmer.

“Phew…”

Only then did Daeho remove the mosquito clamp from the blood-soaked wound.

“Done for now. Surgical drape.”

“But you haven’t removed the hemostat yet.”

“It’s controlling the bleeding, so we can’t remove it yet.”

“Oh, right. Here.”

Shhh.

Nurse Lee Suyeon handed the drape with a dazed expression.

Daeho spread it over the wound and spoke to the patient.

“Mr. Kim Kyungsoo, my voice should be clearer now.”

“Hhh… yes.”

“And is your vision a bit better?”

“Hhh…”

The patient answered only with a weak exhale.

Daeho smiled, listening to his breathing.

“Breathing should be easier now.”

“Huff, huff.”

“So far, we’ve performed emergency care. Understand?”

At that moment, the patient turned his head with effort to look at Daeho.

His eyes hadn’t fully focused yet but followed Daeho’s voice.

He blinked.

Blink, blink.

Seeing this, Daeho smiled more deeply.

“Good. We’ll replenish the lost blood with transfusion.”

“Ugh…”

“Yes. We’ll keep monitoring. Additional emergency care may be needed depending on the situation.”

“Huff, huff.”

The patient communicated only through changes in breathing.

Daeho understood perfectly.

“Thank you properly later. Not now.”

“Ugh, ugh.”

“No. Relax. Sleeping is part of treatment too.”

“Hhh…”

The patient exhaled and, almost like a lie, fell asleep.

The medical staff relaxed as well.

“Ha… whew. I thought my blood would dry up.”

“But Richard senior, what did you do?”

Seo Juran asked, startled.

Swoosh!

Everyone’s eyes turned to Daeho.

His response was cold, even sharp.

“Now’s the time to ask that?”

“Uh?”

“We barely survived the ultra-emergency. Don’t relax yet.”

Zzhhh.

Daeho spoke firmly, but the staff didn’t fully understand.

“But he’s breathing and asleep now…”

“You need to stay alert,” Daeho said.

They asked, confused.

Their understanding of emergency care was still shallow.

Daeho didn’t get angry.

He muttered quietly, bitterly.

“You need to have learned something first.”

Everyone perked up at that.

“Huh?”

“No. Go wash your hands for a moment.”

“What should we do?”

“Dr. Kang stays. Everyone else, do your tasks.”

Swoosh.

Daeho left after saying that.

As he walked away, the staff whispered among themselves.

“How much time did that take? Why so short?”

“They stopped the hemothorax in that little time?”

“Is this… even possible?”

Even after helping, they couldn’t fully believe it.

Meanwhile, Daeho’s expression was firm.

“The road ahead is long, very long.”

He had been prepared, so there was no disappointment.

But one thing angered him.

‘And yet they still walk around with puffed-up shoulders?’

He felt strong resentment toward the emergency medicine specialists.

Watching their behavior closely had strongly irritated him.
